Five data files are included in the "Argos Raw Data" (Child Item 2) of this data release. Two data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DIAG (Diagnostic) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular Comma Separate Value (CSV) format. Two other data files (with identical content) contain the raw Argos DS (Dispose) data, one in the legacy verbose ASCII format and one in a tabular CSV...

Observer-specific population indices for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Arctic Coastal Plain study area. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices separated by observer and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial. The data used to produce these estimates contain known errors. Many but not all of these errors are corrected within the R package AKaerial. These data are presented for historical purposes only. See https://github.com/USFWS/ACP-Mapping and comments within...

This R code (PrepData.R) is used to process the quality controlled legacy nest card data (1985 - 2019) together with the observer names data to produce a capture history data set plot searched twice in 1995 to 1999. Second searches of plot are defined by the PLOTTYPE = “R2” in the nest cards data. Matches are define by the PREVIOUSOBS and PREVIOUSNEST field in the nest card data set but a large number of quality control issue arise in this process and are resolve as detailed in this code. This code produces a data file “chdata.csv” that defines the capture history for each nest and is used as input to Program MARK and JAGS for model fitting and detection estimation. Basic operations include reconciling species and...

This is a technical summary produced by MBM-AK biologists who participated in the 1993-1994 LOCI survey. The summary details the survey’s background, objectives, general description, significant conclusions, and results. This summary was likely submitted as a stipulation of the survey’s contract with Minerals Management Service (contract number: OCS Study MMS 94-0063). This document is referenced in the LOCI draft report memorandum, “LOCI_MMSReportMemo.docx”.

These data include the transect survey IDs; latitudes and longitude (decimal degrees) of transect midpoints; transect lengths; and transect areas corresponding to the winter 1994 LOCI survey. This is the tidied version of the “Winter 1994” tab data found in the “1993_1994_LOCI_TrasectMidpoints_Length_Area.xlsx” file; tidying was completed using R code (“1993_1994_LOCI_Transects_tidyData.R”; R version 4.1.1 (2021-08-10)).

This dataset includes tables summarizing image information and bird counts from the aerial digital images taken over open water at Izembek Lagoon in Alaska in fall 2017-2019. These summaries list one record per image and provide the camera parameters, latitude, longitude, altitude, and automated and manual counts representing the total number of birds in each taxon (brant, white-cheeked geese, emperor geese, gulls, and other birds) identified in the image. The original images (.JPG format) and annotations are provided in an accompanying USGS data release (Weiser et al. 2022).

This is a comma delimited text file of the bird observations for the Arctic Coastal Plain survey. These observations have undergone an extensive quality control process that is ongoing and corrected several errors in the source data. Point observation of birds are given in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326 and are accurate only to +/- 500m. The field "Year" gives the calendar year that the survey was flown, "Stratum" gives the transect density strata name, "NavTransect" gives the transect identifier used for navigation by the pilot (this is not necessarily the same as the design transect), and "Obs_Type" is the social group (single, pair, etc.) of the bird observation, "Num" is the number of observation of...

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on the spring abundance of targeted waterfowl species nesting on the YKD coastal zone in western Alaska. This region supports millions of waterbirds that comprise one of the largest and most important waterfowl breeding grounds in North America, including species of concern such as the red-throated loon (Gavia stellata), emperor goose (Chen canagica), Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans), common eider (Somateria mollissima), black scoter (Melanitta nigra), long-tailed duck (Clangula hyemalis), and the threatened spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri). The YKD goose, swan, and crane survey was first implemented in 1985 to monitor...

This is a collection of the original Paradox files produced during the 1994 MBM-AK SEAK survey. Paradox is an outdated relational database program that is now obsolete. Therefore, most of the individual files and sidecar files contained within this collection cannot be further described because we are not able to view them at this time. Because Borland (owner of Paradox) never defined file extensions for Paradox, the following is a list of file extensions found within this collection and for those with commonly-recognized definitions, those are included as well: .DB (Paradox table), .SSL(script source), .RSL (report source), .COL, .N00, .N01, TVF (table view settings for dBASE table), .FAM (listing of related files),...

This is the R code that was implemented to tidy the original 1994 MBM-AK SEAK bird density dataset (“1994_SEAK_BirdDensities.csv”), producing the final dataset “1994_SEAK_BirdDensities_tidy.csv”. In doing so, the original dataset was reshaped so that all species and bird densities were located in two distinct columns.

Because few surveys of marine birds and mammals have been conducted in the Yakutat, Alaska, area, particularly in Russell and Nunatak fiords, we undertook a pelagic and shoreline survey for these species in June 2000. A total of 5,015 individuals of 45 bird species and 166 individuals of 7 mammal species were observed during the surveys. The marine bird assemblage was dominated by waterfowl, larids, and alcids, and the most abundant species were the northern fulmar, mew gull, glaucous-winged gull, black-legged kittiwake, arctic tern, and marbled murrelet. Sea otters and harbor seals were the most abundant marine mammals encountered. Yakutat Bay and Russell Fiord had a high diversity of marine birds (33 and 30 species),...
