Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Conservation Strategy - Tier One Aquatic Focus Areas. Focus Areas were developed using USGS 8-digit Hydrologic Units (HUC) as base layer. Each HUC was ranked using both quantitative and qualitative criteria and using the ranks revised based on peer review and expert opinion. For methodology relating to this ranking please visit the Montana Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Management Strategy website at http://fwp.mt.gov/specieshabitat/strategy/default.html. In some cases adjacent HUCs were combined to form an aquatic focus area.

River Conservation Opportunity Areas represent areas of the state where organizations and individuals working on the conservation of SGCN and their habitat would be most likely to successfully implement the conservation actions summarized in the Wildlife Action Plan for taxonomic and natural community groups. Providing information to help people make decisions about “where” to implement conservation actions is an important related aspect of conservation actions. Although most COAs have been given boundaries, they are indeed “fuzzy”, meaning their application can vary considerably according to context or conditions and they are not fixed or definitive—they will move, depending on the objectives.

Conservation Opportunity Areas are places in Illinois: with significant existing or potential wildlife and habitat resources; where partners are willing to plan, implement, and evaluate conservation actions; where financial and human resources are available; and where conservation is motivated by an agreed-upon conservation purpose and set of objectives. To create a list of places in the state fitting this description, scientists with Illinois Natural History Survey identified priority areas for conservation, using a variety of tools, such as Audubon’s Important Bird Areas and The Nature Conservancy’s portfolio sites. The centerpiece of their analyses, however, was a dataset showing the state’s key blocks of habitat...

The Wildlife Action Network is composed of mapped terrestrial and aquatic habitats, buffers, and connectors that represent a diversity of quality habitats that support Species in Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). The Network is made up of mapped habitat representing viable or persistent populations and “richness hotspots” of Species in Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). Added to this information are other data on the relative condition of habitat including spatially prioritized and connected Sites of Biodiversity Significance, Lakes of Biological Significance, and Streams with “exceptional” Indices of Biological Integrity. Consideration should be given to projects or activities that could result in the loss, degradation...

Critical habitat are areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers the importance of these areas to the conservation of this species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.

This geodatabase of point, line and polygon features is an effort to consolidate all of the range improvement locations on BLM-managed land in Idaho into one database. Currently, the point feature class only has range improvements from Boise District (Four Rivers, Owyhee, and Bruneau Field Offices), Twin Falls District (Shoshone, Burley and Jarbidge Field Offices) and Idaho Falls District (Salmon, Challis and Upper Snake Field Offices). Range improvements are structures intended to enhance rangeland resources, including wildlife, watershed, and livestock management. Examples of range improvements include water troughs, spring headboxes, culverts, fences, water pipelines, gates, wildlife guzzlers, artificial nest...

This project will provide sanitation and thinning of about 50 acres in 2010 (approximately 250 acres total through 2014) to enhance the white bark pine stand on Commissary Ridge, which is the southernmost white bark pine stand in Wyoming. The area has mature and young stands of white bark and limber pine. The mature trees have extensive 70+% mountain pine beetle infestation with a new infection of white pine blister rust. The project would remove diseased white bark and limber pine reduce the spread of mountain pine beetle and white pine blister rust to enable the younger aged cohorts to survive. FHP report has been done. White bark pine is an important tree species for wildlife. The area has mature and young stands...

The U.S. Forest Service and USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service are working together to improve the health of forests where public and private lands meet. Through the Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership, the two USDA agencies are restoring landscapes, reducing wildfire threats to communities and landowners, protecting water quality and enhancing wildlife habitat. The subset of all NRCS Common Resource Areas (CRA), version 1.2, that can support native prairie habitats within the Mississippi River Basin. A Common Resource Area is defined as a geographical area where resource concerns, problems, or treatment needs are similar. It is considered a subdivision of an existing Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) map delineation or polygon. Landscape conditions, soil, climate, human considerations, and other natural resource information are used to determine the geographic boundaries of a CRA.

In order to identify areas within the Mississipi River Basin (MRB) where implementing wildlife conservation actions could potentially provide the highest benefit to both local waters and the Gulf of Mexico the Miss. River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative identified a "Water Quality Priority Zone". This provisional zone of interest represents HUC-8 watersheds having the highest potential for nutrient export from agricultural sources (using nitrogen as a surrogate). The potential for nutrient export was determined using the 2002 SPARROW Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin Model and cropland data from the 2013 USDA-NASS Cropland Data Layer. As the results from the SPARROW model are somewhat dated (ca. 2002), we incorporated...

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)-related impaired waters for which a TMDL has been developed (Cycle Year 2010) within the Mississippi River Basin. For purposes of identifying N/P-related TMDLs, EPA used the following national impairment categories: algal growth, ammonia, noxious aquatic plants, nutrients, organic enrichment/oxygen depletion. Wildlife carcasses recorded by Montana Department of Transportation, Idaho Department of Fish & Game, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service were aggregated to the nearest mile marker for major roads of the U.S. Northern Rockies. WGA connectivity flowlines were intersected with the road network and attributed to the nearest mile marker, along with their connectivity ranking, which indicates their expected relative importance to maintaining westwide connectivity. Values for potential risk factors, including average annual daily traffic (AADT), functional class, number of lanes, road surface width, landscape condition of surrounding habitat, ruggedness of surrounding landscape, and topographic position relative to surrounding...

This dataset contains information regarding the acreages of land currently (as of 2004) enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) distributed by county and the year the CRP contract was initiated (1987-2004, excluding 1994 and 1995). Additionally, it contains total acreages of land enrolled in the CRP distributed by county and the contract year (1987-2003). USDA Farm Service Agency's (FSA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resource-conserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion, and enhance wildlife habitat. In return, FSA...

Conservation Opportunity Areas (COA) are intended to guide conservation activities at a landscape level. Landscape conservation is a developing theme across the country and throughout Indiana. Building off the successes of other Indiana landscape initiatives, like Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area and the Healthy Rivers Initiative, Indiana DFW has identified opportunities on the landscape to focus conservation efforts over the next decade. These COA were identified as a way to direct actions toward specific areas on Indiana’s landscape.
