The western coast of Alaska is a remote region, rich in wildlife and providing critical nesting habitat for many of Alaska’s seabirds. It is also home to indigenous communities who rely upon the region’s natural resources to support a traditional lifestyle of hunting, gathering, and fishing. Although the region is frequently subject to extensive inland flooding from Bering Sea storms, little is known about the extent and frequency of flooding and its impacts on vegetation, wildlife, and water quality. Furthermore, information is lacking about how climate change and sea-level rise (which can influence the frequency and intensity of storms and subsequent flooding) are affecting this area, its communities, and their...

Participatory mapping is a general term applied to activities that work with participants to gather and map spatial information to help communities learn, discuss, build consensus, and make decisions about their communities and associated resources (NOAA 2015). Here we used participatory mapping to document the locations of different species of berries and understand any social, ecological, or climatological reasons that these locations may be shifting. Mapping was accomplished using topographic basemaps of the villages and surrounding areas overlaid with mylar sheeting. The area surrounding the villages of Hooper Bay and Kotlik were represented with arrays of 1: 63,360 USGS quadrangle topographic maps (USGS, 2017)....

This is a zip folder of geographic line data in three formats that represent the distance sampling transects. All these were produced from the Rmarkdown code found in the file YKD-sample-frame.Rmd. All coordination reference systems are in EPSG:4326. The overall survey area is define as the YKD nest plot survey area, found under the MBM project mbm7wa_002 at https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/6452f8a7d34eefd5da83c5ff.

Between 1979 and 1982, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) and the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, undertook an assessment of the states geothermal resources under a program jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the State of Alaska. During this period, reconnaissance investigations of more than 100 thermal spring sites and fumarole fields located in Alaska were conducted by DGGS.

This is the field protocol used to instruct crews on data collection while in the field at found nests or dead birds during the 2022 distance sampling season. Used in conjunction with the document Field_Protocol_Distance_Sampling_20220506.pdf, which describes the distance sampling protocol, and the document YDNC_2022_map_20220419.pdf, which describes crew areas within the survey area.

This data set describes nuclear microsatellite genotypes derived from eight autosomal loci (BCA6, BCA9, BCA11, BCA5, CRG, OXY13, TSP1.20.09 and TSP1.20.46) and a 366 base pair portion of the mitochondrial control region. A total of 665 Greater White-fronted Geese were examined by genotyping and 518 by sequencing with samples coming from its circumpolar range representing multiple flyways (Midcontinent, Pacific, Greenland, Palearctic). The sex of most samples was determined in the field by morphology or cloacal examination. Version History: First release: June 2018 Revised: July 2018 (ver. 2.0)

This data package presents legacy data on Emperor Goose, Cackling Goose, Black Brant, and Greater White-fronted Goose, breeding biology, behavior, and morphology collected at study sites near Kokechik Bay on the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge (previously Clarence Rhodes National Wildlife Refuge), Alaska during the summers of 1982 through 1988. These data were collected to provide a basis for the evaluation of long-term changes in Emperor Goose and other waterfowl biology on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska.
To determine the current spatial distribution of waterfowl nesting areas and understand the importance of environmental variables in the selection of nest locations, we modeled nest densities for six species of geese and eiders that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, including cackling goose ( Branta hutchinsii minima), emperor goose ( Chen canagica), black brant ( B. bernicla nigricans), greater white-fronted goose ( Anser albifrons frontalis), spectacled eider ( Somateria fischeri), and common eider ( S. mollissima). The data used were from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's long-term waterbird monitoring program in which single-visit nest searches were conducted during incubation (typically from early...

This data set contains allele sizes for 8 previously published and 16 novel microsatellite loci, and one microsatellite redesigned for amplification in Merlins (Falco columarius) associated with circadian clock control and polymorphism that has been associated with juvenile dispersal and migratory behavior in some avian species for Merlin (Falco columbarius) from North America (n=21). Allele sizes for the 16 microsatellite loci developed in this study are included for 12 Gyrfalcons (F. rusticolus) and 13 Peregrine Falcons (F. peregrinus). Additional population level data for Merlins and mtDNA will be added to this data release in the future.

This is the raw nest card data that was recorded from a digital device in the field. It undergoes quality control and is combined with nest data records transcribed from paper cards, and waypoint location from handheld GPSs. This is the the raw source used to produce the file Nest_Distance_QC_2022.csv. See R code in wrangle_2022.R for specific processing step and source data.

Nearshore bathymetry is a vital link that joins offshore water depths to coastal topography. Seamless water depth information is a critical input parameter for reliable storm surge models, enables the calculation of sediment budgets, and is necessary baseline data for a range of coastal development decisions. Bathymetric data collection capabilities of an active coastal geohazard field program operated by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) were expanded in 2012. Resultant datasets presented in this report include nearshore bathymetric measurements of critical shallow-water coastal areas in the vicinity of six western Alaska communities: Gambell, Golovin, Hooper Bay, Savoonga, Shishmaref,...

This is the main quality controlled data set for nests used for the distance sampling analysis and population estimates. It is produced from the code in wrangle_2022.R and contains information on on nest location, distance from transect, nest species, observer, and other covariates. For distance sampling analysis, it needs to be combined with the transect effort data in Effort_2022.csv. See the file wrangle_2022.R for details on quality control process.
