From August 2018 to October 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey collected spatially high-resolution water quality data as part of five shoreline synoptic surveys around the perimeters of Owasco, Seneca, and Skaneateles Lakes within the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Water-quality data were collected just below water surface utilizing YSI EXO2 multiparameter sondes and portable nitrate sensors paired with real-time GPS data as part of a HABs monitoring program in the Finger Lakes. In October 2019, water-quality data collection was paired with discrete phytoplankton grab samples on Owasco Lake and Seneca Lake. Phytoplankton grab samples were collected just below water surface with a peristaltic pump at twelve locations...

This child item data set provides phytoplankton data collected from Owasco Lake, New York, on October 8, 2019. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume are reported. All data are reported as raw calculated values. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at twelve sampling locations on Owasco Lake.

Our approach will include sampling a wide range of habitats and environmental conditions throughout the middle and lower Pecos River basin, across an 18 month time-span to account for seasonal and phenological events. We will utilize a suite of univariate and multivariate statistical techniques to relate occurrence and density of golden alga to environmental factors and other co-occurring organisms. The proposed research will benefit managers of the Pecos River, of its associated reservoirs and unique habitats (sinkholes on the Bottomless Lakes State Park and Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge), and of its resident aquatic biota by identifying specific water quality attributes that promote golden alga bloom development...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

This child item data set provides phytoplankton data collected from Seneca Lake, New York between October 9-10, 2019. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume are reported. All data are reported as raw calculated values. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at twelve sampling locations on Seneca Lake.

REPORT PROJECT BACKGROUND: Golden alga (Prymnesium parvum) is a harmful algal species that is primarily found in marine ecosystems but is also present and invasive in brackish inland waters. The first documented bloom of golden alga in the United States occurred in the Pecos River in 1985. This species has since invaded other water bodies in the Pecos River basin (e.g. sinkhole habitats, reservoirs) and has been reported in at least 23 U.S. states. Toxins produced by golden alga can be lethal to fishes, bivalves, crayfish, and gilled amphibians. The ecological and economical impacts of golden alga blooms have been severe. Recent research suggests that the frequency and severity of golden alga blooms will increase...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides the phytoplankton tally sheet, including photomicrographs, for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through September 2017. All data are raw tallies, not calculated abundances or concentrations. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe the potential for cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin ocurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundances (density reported as natural units) are reported.

The Denver fossil algae database were gathered from the inception of Denver Region in 1953 by Richard Rezak. His specialty was algae, carbonate platforms, and off-shore modern reefs. He developed a very useful litho-stratigraphic tool while studying Proterozoic algae and stromatolites in Glacier National Park. This lead to his studies of modern analogs in the Caribbean and South Seas. This collection contains 1001 fossil localities. This collection was originally created and maintained by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and as of March 2020 has been transferred to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

In support of a preliminary analysis performed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) that found elevated nutrient levels along selected reaches of the Mohawk River, one-dimensional, unsteady, hydraulic and water-quality models using HEC-RAS and HEC-RAS Nutrient Simulation Module I (version 5.0.3) were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 127-mile reach of the Mohawk River between Rome and Cohoes, New York. The models were designed to accurately simulate within-channel flow conditions for this highly regulated, control structure dense river reach. The models were calibrated for the study period of May through September 2016 using best available streamflow, temperature,...
