The Barrier Island Comprehensive Monitoring (BICM) program was developed by Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) and is implemented as a component of the System Wide Assessment and Monitoring (SWAMP) program. The program uses both historical data and contemporary data collections to assess and monitor changes in the aerial and subaqueous extent of islands, habitat types, sediment texture and geotechnical properties, environmental processes, and vegetation composition. Examples of BICM datasets include still and video aerial photography for documenting shoreline changes, shoreline positions, habitat mapping, land change analyses, light detection and ranging (lidar) surveys for topographic...

The data represent sandy beaches, from Maine to Virginia, before Hurricane Sandy which made landfall on October 29, 2012 from the “Beach and Tidal Inlet Habitat Inventories” project. The North Atlantic coast, Maine to Long Island Sound and the Mid-Atlantic coast, Montauk, NY to Virginia datasets used different methodology and are discribed below.North Atlantic:The shoreline was divided into segments (called ‘pockets’) based on whether the area directly adjacent to the beach was developed or undeveloped. Developed beach segments were coded with orange polylines. Undeveloped beach segments were coded with light green polylines. Each shoreline segment was labelled with the name of the municipality followed by a number...

RGB-averaged orthoimages were created from aerial imagery collected on October 11, 2019, along the North Carolina coast between the Virginia-North Carolina border vicinity and Cape Lookout, North Carolina. These RBG-averaged orthoimages were created to document ground conditions one-month after Hurricane Dorian, which made landfall on the North Carolina coast on September 6, 2019. The RBG-averaged orthoimages help researchers estimate the land surface after Hurricane Dorian and were created to document inter-annual changes in shoreline position and coastal morphology in response to storm events using aerial imagery collections and a structure from motion (SFM) workflow. These data can be used with geographic information...

This dataset is part of the Hard Shoreline Stabilization Structures on Sandy Beaches in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) prior to Hurricane Sandy project. The data represent the approximate locations of hard shoreline stabilization structures along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine through Virginia visible in Google Earth imagery at or before the time that Hurricane Sandy made landfall in October 2012. The hard shoreline stabilization structures were identified as part of an inventory of habitat modifications to sandy beach habitat within the U.S. Atlantic Coast breeding range of the federally-threatened piping plover. Hard shoreline stabilization structures...

Geophysical and geological survey data were collected off Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts, in May and July 2016. Approximately 130 linear kilometers of subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, sea floor photographs, and (or) video at 26 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 19 of the 26 sampling sites and video and (or) photographic imagery of the sea floor were taken at all 26 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the sea floor by identifying sediment-texture, seabed morphology, and underlying geologic structure and stratigraphy. Data collected...

This dataset represents North Atlantic beaches in 2015. The data are part of a larger project, Inventory of Habitat Modifications to Sandy Oceanfront Beaches in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) as of 2015: Maine to North Carolina. As of 2015, 1,742.16 miles (2,803.73 kilometers [km]) of sandy shoreline was present between Georgetown, ME, and the North Carolina-South Carolina state boundary, with 1,650.68 miles (2,656.51 km) of sandy beach habitat present and 90.88 miles (146.26 km) where sandy beach habitat was absent seaward of hard stabilization structures, or armor. Massachusetts (458.40 miles or 737.72 km) and North Carolina (322.26 miles or 518.63 km) had the...
