This data release is tree-ring data near Columbine Lake and surrounding region, Grand County, Colorado (Latitude 40.27˚ N, Longitude -105.83˚ E NAD83). Re-collection of four existing tree-ring sites (Hot Sulphur Springs Psuedotsuga menziessii (HSU), Lexan Creek Picea engelmannii (LCU), Monarch Lake Pinus ponderosa (MLU), and Vasquez Mountain Psuedotsuga menziessii (VMU)) was conducted to update data to the most recent years possible and to maximize data overlap with instrumental records and with historical records of fire occurrence. At the time of collection, initial climate-growth relationships were assessed in a network of previously collected tree-ring sites (collected between 1987 and 2003) to determine which...

The purpose of the data collection was to monitor the microclimate in the “Bonito Flow” Ice Cave located in Sunset Crater National Monument. This cave is considered a sacred spot for some southwestern tribes as it was a historical source for ice. The main purpose of the climate monitoring was to determine if the cave is still an active ice cave, i.e., a cave that contains perennial ice. The data acquired consists of temperatures, humidity, and pressures throughout the cave structure and also includes temperatures and humidity measured outside of the cave, near the entrance. Sensors were distributed throughout the cave but focus on a large ice puddle that forms on the cave floor during the winter months. Cave floors...

These data were compiled to provide gridded estimates of environmental suitability for pinyon-juniper species in western North America. These gridded suitability projections provide estimates of suitability under current climate conditions and future climate conditions and allow for visualization of suitability change across each species’ entire range. These data consist of gridded projected suitability values for three pinyon and six juniper tree species across western North America. Objective(s) of our study were to estimate suitability for these tree species under current and future climate conditions to compare potential for distribution shifts under climate change. These data represent a relationship between...

Samples of silicified wood remnants from 8 trees were collected under research permit YELL-SCI-8030 on June 17, 2023, and on September 19, 2023 adjacent to Artemisia Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. Samples were collected for radiocarbon (14C) dating of the wood to determine when the trees grew. Trees do not grow on active geyser mounds (Hurwitz and others, 2020, 2024) and therefore, trees grew around Artemisia Geyser during a protracted period of eruption quiescence. The study of silicified trees at Artemisia Geyser follows similar studies at Old Faithful Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin (Hurwitz and others, 2020) and at Steamboat Geyser in Norris Geyser Basin (Hurwitz and others,...

This digital dataset contains the gridded future climate data used for the Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models. The monthly climate data for Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models are based on the Salinas and Carmel River Basins Study (SCRBS) future climate scenarios [Henson and others, 2024). SCRBS considers one baseline climate scenario that represents recent historical climate conditions and five future climate scenarios: Hot-Wet (HW), Warm-Wet (WW), Hot-Dry (HD), Warm-Dry (WD), and Central Tendency (CT) (Henson and others, 2024). To develop the monthly climate grids, the regional climate data was resampled to a monthly timescale and area weighted to the model grid. The climate data includes spatially distributed...

The Massachusetts Drought Management Plan (DMP, 2023) uses data from select lake and impoundment systems as an index for drought in six of seven regions in the state. The contents of these lakes and impoundments are reported to Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and classified as one of five levels for drought severity ranging from level 0 (Normal; percentile greater than 30) to level 4 (Emergency; percentile less than 2). Lake and impoundment system data are provided at the end of each month to DCR through multiple agencies as lake levels, volumes, or percent-full (reservoir capacity). USGS reviewed data from 14 of the lake or impoundment systems including 28 waterbodies. Diagrams for...

This data release contains inputs for and outputs from hydrologic simulations for the conterminous United States (CONUS) using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) version 5.1.0 (https://www.usgs.gov/software/precipitation-runoff-modeling-system-prms) and the USGS National Hydrologic Model infrastructure (NHM, Regan and others, 2018). These simulations were developed to provide estimates of the water budget and statistics of streamflow for historical and potential future conditions using atmospheric forcing data from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5). Specific file types include: 1) input forcings of minimum air temperature, maximum air temperature, and daily precipitation derived...

Geoheritage is a term which lies at the intersection of science, society, and sustainability and is applied to significant geologic features and landforms that have scientific, educational, cultural, economic, and aesthetic value. Many geologic sites have enriched society through the geoheritage values: scientific research and education, cultural significance, economic opportunities, and aesthetic appeal. The Geoheritage Sites of the Nation geodatabase (GDB) provides an initial inventory of geoheritage sites to showcase the geodiversity and natural heritage throughout the United States (U.S.) and its territories. Sites included in this inventory were selected from compiled geosite references of in situ geologic...

In California, increased wildfire activity has been linked to decreasing snowpack and earlier snowmelt. Not only has this translated into a longer fire season, but reduced snowpack has cascading effects that impact streamflow, water supplies, agricultural productivity, and ecosystems. California receives 80% of its precipitation during the winter, so mountain snowpack plays a critical role in replenishing the state’s water supply. One factor that affects the amount of winter precipitation (and therefore snowpack) in California is the North Pacific Jet (NPJ)—a current of strong, high altitude winds that occur over the northern Pacific Ocean. Winters when the NPJ is located further north than normal are drier than...

These data include snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE) for a field campaign on April 9, 2024. The field area is comprised of 311 surveyed points in, on the perimeter of, and surrounding six forest openings next to Coal Creek off Coal Bank Pass in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado, USA. These measurements were taken to look at the relationship between snow accumulation and snow melt patterns between forest gaps of various sizes, and forest edges of various sizes (edge of forest gaps). Canopy metrics, including canopy height, total gap area, mean distance to canopy, canopy closure, leaf area index, non-directional edginess, canopy edginess with a southern aspect, and canopy edginess with a northern...

Data files contain simulated mean, daily, offshore, water temperatures for 20 vertical depths (ranging 4 to 159 m below the surface) for 9 years in the 2040s (2041-2049) and nine years in the 2090s (2091-2099) at two sites in Lake Michigan. One site is located in the northern basin where the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been maintaining a weather buoy since 1979 (buoy 45002: 45.344, -86.411). The other site is located in the southern basin where NOAA has been maintaining a weather buoy since 1981 (buoy 45007: 42.674, -87.026). Simulated water temperatures were generated by integrating atmospheric and hydrodynamic models.
