Species populations are in a state of flux due to the cumulative and interacting impacts of climate change and human stressors across landscapes. Invasive spread, pathogen outbreaks, land-use activities, and especially climate disruption and its associated impacts—severe drought (see Figure 3 or the GPLCC), reduced stream flow, increased wildfire frequency, extended growing season, and extreme weather events—are increasing, and in some cases accelerating. These impacts are outpacing management and conservation responses intended to support trust species and their critical habitats. Our common goal is to craft successful adaptation strategies in the face of these multiple, interacting drivers of environmental change....

This project integrates fire risk models, species distribution models (SDMs) and population models with scenarios of future climate and land cover to project how the effects of climate-induced changes to species distributions and land use change will impact threatened species in fire-prone ecosystems. This project also identifies and prioritizes potential management responses to climate change (e.g. assisted colonization, fire management, land protection, dispersal corridors). Anticipated products include: 1) maps (digital and hard copy) of habitat suitability under current and future climate change, current and future projected urban growth and combinations of climate change and future projected urban growth, under...

This project used species distribution modeling, population genetics, and geospatial analysis of historical vs. modern vertebrate populations to identify climate change refugia and population connectivity across the Sierra Nevada. It is hypothesized that climate change refugia will increase persistence and stability of populations and, as a result, maintain higher genetic diversity. This work helps managers assess the need to include connectivity and refugia in climate change adaptation strategies. Results help Sierra Nevada land managers allocate limited resources, aid future scenario assessment at landscape scales, and develop a performance measure for assessing resilience.

We will translate existing modeled hydroclimatic data into metrics used for water crossing design and replacement. WDFW permits (Hydraulic Code Rules, Chapter 220-110 WAC) and provides technical guidance for construction of hundreds of fish passable culverts, a number which is expected to rise dramatically in response to a 2013 federal court injunction directing the state to repair thousands of culverts that inhibit salmon migration. Current WDFW design guidance does not account for changes in hydrology resulting from climate change. This project will support the development of designs that maintain desired performance (e.g. connectivity benefits to aquatic organisms) throughout water crossings expected life.This...

The efficiency and effectiveness of aerial photography by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Midwest Aviation Program has been improved with upgraded components for the Applanix DSS 439 Camera System, including a 60 millimeter lens and gyro-stabilization mount. Both are installed and in use. The stabilization mount improves image resolution and minimizes asymmetrical pixels. The 60 millimeter lens also improves image resolution for higher quality aerial photographs. This advanced equipment results in more accurate bird counts and stereo interpretation of vegetation maps which will ultimately assist management decisions made in biological programs.
FY2014There is increasing interest in climate change adaptation, particularly since the release of the Presidents Executive Order on Climate Preparedness in November, 2013, yet many field staff remain uncertain how to put adaptation into practice. Our goal with this project is to bridge the gap between the wealth of high-level climate adaptation guidance and the field staff who carry out specific regulatory processes, specifically Habitat Conservation Plans. Following best practices from the literature on linking science and management, we will begin with a focus on what people do rather than on the climate science. We will map the current HCP development and approval process in Region 8, identify where and how...

The Peninsular Florida LCC (PFLCC) uses a science-based, data-rich approach to define priorities across the landscape. In order to communicate those priorities and underlying information effectively to a broad range of stakeholders, PFLCC wishes to work with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to develop a simple interactive viewer for data and products derived from science activities that will provide information to guide natural resource management decisions.. Over the longer term, PFLCC would also like to build on the successful use of the Data Basin (databasin.org) platform by other LCCs to develop a Conservation Planning Atlas in order to share the data layers using the feature-rich mapping, visualization,...

Rutgers University and Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey have partnered on a project entitled Protection of Critical Beach-nesting Bird Habitats in the Wake of Severe Coastal Storms under the North Atlantic LCC coordinated Hurricane Sandy Disaster Mitigation Funds beach resiliency projects. The project uses species’ distribution modeling to examine the landscape-scale habitat variables that influence beach-nesting bird habitat selection. The original project had the following primary goals: 1) catalogue suitable breeding habitat criteria for NJ’s beach-nesting birds; 2) quantify changes in beach-nesting bird habitat resulting from Superstorm Sandy; 3) evaluate the impact of anthropogenic storm recovery...

The GCPO LCC region contains some of the most diverse aquatic biota in the world. The streams and rivers on which this biota depends are valuable conservation and economic resources. However, fragmentation of streams and rivers by dams and other barriers is a primary threat to the health of resident and anadromous fish species in southern rivers. Conservation planning in the region requires an assessment of the degree of fragmentation of streams and rivers and potential impacts on fish populations. However, the ability to conduct a connectivity assessment is limited in the GCPO LCC region due to the lack of a comprehensive dataset of fish barrier locations, attributes, and links to basic river maps. SARP proposes...

A “gateway” using Data Basin technology has been developed to serve the data integration, collaboration and outreach needs of the NPLCC. The gateway will continue to be a customized interface of the Data Basin platform that includes special branding, curation of spatial content, and direct links to selected sites in support of projects funded by and for the NPLCC . Conservation Biology Institute will add to the “gateway” a spatial data visualization tool to showcase priority data from the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership.

The Lower Columbia River and adjacent coastal regions of Oregon and Washington contain a rich diversity of natural and cultural resources managed by a complex array of tribal sovereign nations, federal/state/local agencies, non-government conservation organizations, landowners, stakeholders and others. But our region lacks a current, comprehensive, landscape-scale blueprint that can be used to drive and align conservation efforts to achieve landscape-scale goals in response to stressors, such as climate change, energy development, and land/water use practices. In response to this need, the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative and US Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 has initiated a Landscape Conservation...

Stream temperature data will be acquired from federal and provincial government agencies, as well as other data holders in British Columbia to eventually be housed in an interagency database. Spatial statistical models for river networks like those used for NorWeST will be used with existing and readily available stream temperature data to develop a consistent set of high-resolution predictions for all streams and reaches within two pilot areas: an interior location represented by the Nicola River watershed in the Great Northern LCC and a coastal location represented by the Somass River watershed within the North Pacific LCC. Work in these proposed pilot areas would include processing of spatial data and applying...

Describing the social network that links the interconnected partners is the first step to leverage the network’s capacity to be greater than the sum of its parts. The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners and a social network scientist are applying social network theory to create a system of nodes and edges of a Conservation Social Network. The LCC partners were surveyed in 2015 and again in 2018, in order to measure the dynamics of partner communication. From this research, the partnership aims to better leverage partner expertise and better facilitate collaboration across geographic and organizational boundaries.

Landscape conservation design is an opportunity for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) to work collaboratively with partners to develop and implement a landscape approach that ensures our priority resources will have the capacity to cope with and respond to future change. This research models patterns of climate connectivity to map linkages among protected areas that promote long-term landscape connectivity across Alaska and northwest Canada under projected climate change. Using spatial data on current land use and climate patterns, and circuit theory-based connectivity modeling approaches, this research identifies corridors that follow climate gradients and avoid human modified...

The Yukon North Slope is an arctic “hot spot” of climate change-induced effects with profound significance for the Inuvialuit and the larger region. In 1984, the Inuvialuit entered into a land claim agreement – the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) – with the governments of Canada, Yukon and Northwest Territories. A co-management body formed to make a plan, which was developed in 2003 but never ratified and is now considered out-of-date. Round River Conservation Studies is assisting WMAC(NS) in the collection, development and synthesis of spatial data, models and analyses of cultural and ecological values of the YNS. The project is a collaboration among the NWB LCC, Round River Conservation Studies, and the Arctic...

FY2014Land management agencies seek to understand how organisms use the landscape in order to develop management strategies that maintain healthy, resilient communities that have the ecological and evolutionary potential to respond to climate change. An ideal approach to understanding how organisms move through the landscape is by inferring ongoing and historic movements from patterns of genetic continuity that characterize regional sets of populations. From patterns of genetic connectivity we can infer the habitat and landscape characteristics that facilitate animal movement and species range shifts over both short and long timescales. Knowing the spatial distribution of critical linkages or corridors allows conservation...

The Pacific Region National Wildlife Refuge System developed a strategic approach to identify region-wide land/habitat conservation priorities. This approach was piloted in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion and resulted in a high-level landscape-scale conservation design. Working closely with conservation partners in the region, we developed a data management and analysis model that builds from existing data sets and can be shared easily with other partners.FY20122012 Objectives: Document a case study on implementing strategic conservation design for the refuge system, which can serve as a model and be applied to other geographic areas Develop a clear picture of landscape scale priorities in the Columbia Plateau, along...
