This community serves to document data and analysis collected by researchers within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center whose mission is to collect high-quality hydrologic data and conduct unbiased, scientifically sound studies of water resources within the Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Basins. We strive to meet the changing needs of those who use our information—from the distribution, availability, and quality of our water resources to topic-oriented research that addresses current hydrological issues.
Natural resource managers and researchers often need long-term averages of historical and future climate scenarios for their study area yet may not have the resources to make these summaries. This project will provide high quality, detailed maps of historical and projected future climate and hydrologic conditions for California and a finer scale version for southern California. The project will also assess the feasibility of expanding these reference data to the southwestern US and identify the most suitable online data portals for the public to view and analyze the data in support of local initiatives. The State Geologic Map Compilation (SGMC) geodatabase of the conterminous United States (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7WH2N65) represents a seamless, spatial database of 48 State geologic maps that range from 1:50,000 to 1:1,000,000 scale. A national digital geologic map database is essential in interpreting other datasets that support numerous types of national-scale studies and assessments, such as those that provide geochemistry, remote sensing, or geophysical data. This data release for the reconnaissance geologic map of the Hells Canyon Study Area, Wallowa County, Oregon, and Idaho and Adams Counties, Idaho, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS, 2020)-compliant version of the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report Map SIR 2007-5046 (Simmons, et al, 2007). In 2022, publication and data linkages were evaluated using two methods in an effort to understand how a data citation workflow has been implemented by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) since the 2016 USGS instructional memorandum, Public Access to Results of Federally Funded Research at the U.S. Geological Survey: Scholarly Publications and Digital Data (USGS OSQI, 2016), went into effect, requiring USGS data be assigned a DOI, be accompanied by a citation, and be referenced from the associated publication (USGS OSQI, 2017). This data release includes data and publication structural metadata results retrieved from the USGS DOI Tool and Crossref APIs and Jupyter notebooks used to process and analyze the results.

The data release for the geologic and structure map of the Choteau 1 x 2 degree quadrangle, western Montana, is a Geologic Map Schema (GeMS)-compliant version that updates the GIS files for the geologic map published in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-1300 (Mudge and others, 2001). The updated digital data present the attribute tables and geospatial features (lines and polygons) in the format that meets GeMS requirements.
