The current database consists of location 9,032 entries. The surface-based, point data include 5,272, 6,939, and 903 density, magnetic susceptibility, and NRM measurements, respectively. Downhole data from 146 drillcore have also been incorporated, yielding an additional 1,145 and 9,622 measurements of density and magnetic susceptibility, respectively. Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years, with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. Developing strategic conservation plans for grassland birds requires an understanding of their individual population ecology, along with their community dynamics amongst species. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides salinity and density data collected at Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah monitoring locations during 2021–2022. Temperature, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen were collected using an In-Situ AquaTROLL 600. Sample density was measured using an Anton Paar DMA 35Ex at 5° increments between 5° and 40° C. Practical salinity was measured at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science using a Guideline Salinometer. Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live.
