Locks and dams are possible management points to block the spread of invasive Asian carps in the United States. Infusion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into water is one deterrent strategy being considered at navigational structures to reduce upstream fish passage that would not directly interfere with lock and dam operations. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of CO2 as a behavioral deterrent to free-swimming fishes. Telemetered bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were monitored within a U-shaped pond (30.5 m long x 13.7 m wide x 1 m deep) using a two-dimensional acoustic telemetry array. Gaseous CO2 was administered to one-half of the pond at 30, 75, or...

The BioAcoustic Fish Fence (BAFF; Fish Guidance Systems Ltd.) is a multi-modal deterrent that utilizes a combination of lights, sound, and bubbles to guide fish away from a location. An experimental deployment of a BAFF is currently ongoing at Barkley Lock and Dam on the Cumberland River near Grand Rivers, KY. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., VEMCO and HTI) deployed in the vicinity of Barkley Lock and Dam to evaluate fish movement and response to the BAFF. Silver carp, grass carp, and native fish species were detected with this system. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
This data was collected to determine responses of red swamp crayfish and rusty crayfish to CO2-enriched water to determine the utility of CO2 as a crayfish control tool. Avoidance tests, emergence tests, and loss of equilibrium (LOE) tests were performed to determine crayfish behavior in CO2-enriched water. Avoidance data (TimeinChamber2.csv, Crossings.csv, FirstLastShuttle.csv, AvoidanceLengthsandWeights.csv) were collected on 20171220 through 20180214. CO2 was injected in one side of a choice chamber under light or dark conditions and 10oC or 24oC water temperature. Shuttle movements were recorded and used to determine the number of crossings from the CO2 injected side to the non-injected side, the CO2 concentration...

The Underwater Acoustic Deterrent System is an experimental deterrent that utilizes underwater sounds to deter invasive carps. An experimental deployment and evaluation of a UADS is currently being conducted at Lock 19 on the Mississippi River, near Keokuk, Iowa. This dataset includes information derived from two telemetry arrays (i.e., 307 kHz HTI and 69 kHz VEMCO) deployed at and around Lock 19 to evaluate fish movement and response to the UADS in 2021 and 2022. Silver Carp, Bighead Carp, Grass Carp, and a variety of native fish species were tagged and monitored with the telemetry arrays. Any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
This dataset includes information derived from a Vemco telemetry array located at Lock and Dam 19 on the Mississippi River near Keokuk, IA. Ten fish species, comprised of both native and invasive species, were detected with this system. Lock Queue Reports, which detail the daily lock operation for river traffic, were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Temperature data were recorded on the Vemco receivers and stage height data were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Six worksheets are included in this file, including a meta-data sheet that describes the datasets, provides variable names, and associated units of measure.

This dataset includes information derived from a Vemco telemetry array located at Lock and Dam 15 on the Mississippi River near Rock Island, IL and a longitudinal telemetry array that ranges from Pool 14 to Pool 19. Silver carp, bighead carp, and paddlefish were detected with this system. Lock Queue Reports, which detail the daily lock operation for river traffic, were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Temperature data were recorded on the Vemco receivers and stage height data were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

This dataset accompanies the article "Upstream experience and experimental translocation of invasive bigheaded carps results in increased upstream passage success at a navigation lock in a large river". The data come from the experimental capture and tagging of invasive bigheaded carp with acoustic transmitters and physically moving some groups farther downstream. These transmitters emit signals that are detected and recorded on receivers that are strategically placed above, within, and below Mississippi River Lock and Dam 19 (LD 19). Once the data from the receivers were downloaded, we could show when successful upstream passage through LD19 occurs and compare the origin of the fish and the physical characteristics...
