Biologists, engineers, planners and land managers from nine public agencies have worked together since 2004 to identify large blocks of protected habitat, the potential wildlife movement corridors through and between them, the factors that could possibly disrupt these linkage zones and opportunities for conservation. REAs synthesize the best available information about resource conditions and trends within an ecoregion. They highlight and map areas of high ecological value, including important wildlife habitats and corridors, and gauge their potential risks from climate change, wildfires, invasive species, energy development, and urban growth. REAs also map areas that have high energy development potential, and relatively low ecological value, which could be best-suited for siting future energy development. About NM Resource Geographic Information System (RGIS) is New Mexico’s geospatial data clearinghouse, hosted and managed by the Earth Data Analysis Center at University of New Mexico for over 23 years. TNC developed a digital version for the whole of David E. Brown and Charles H. Lowe’s 1981 map. Previously, GIS representations of this map were only available for its Arizona and New Mexico portions. Users: please note the relatively coarse source scale of the paper map (1:1,000,000) when using this digital version for analyses. A layer file (.lyr) which mimics the familiar color scheme of the paper map is also available.

We have defined resilience as a function of both a site’s diversity of topoclimates and the site’s ability to support species movement, or terrestrial landscape permeability. Here, we posit that topoclimates provide species localized refugia from the direct effects of a changing climate, whereas landscape permeability reflects the ability of the landscape mosaic to facilitate terrestrial species movement to and between topoclimates as they shift in response to their respective climatic envelopes.90 m topoclimate data, scaled from 0.2 – 1, were multiplied with terrestrial landscape permeability data, scaled from 0 – 1, to generate a resilience value for every 90 m cell across the project area. The Data Distribution Site directs you to the LANDFIRE Viewer, where you can view the 30-meter resolution layers, metadata, and descriptions. NatureServe ecologists lead efforts to develop internationally standardized classifications for terrestrial ecosystems and vegetation. One classification approach is terrestrial ecological systems, mid- to local- scale ecological units useful for standardized mapping and conservation assessments of habitat diversity and landscape conditions. Each ecological system type describes complexes of plant communities influenced by similar physical environments and dynamic ecological processes (like fire or flooding).
