These datasets contain the attributes of individual trees located in and around Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. Attributes include remote sensing indices, terrain characteristics, and-- for the calibration data-- tree size and growth rates. Calibration data (mixedconifervulnerability_calibrationdataset.csv) were collected in long term research plots where trees are visited annually to check for mortality and periodically re-measured for diameter to capture growth. Validation data (mixedconifervulnerability_validationdataset.csv) were collected as part of a randomized sample located within a remote sensing 'flight box'. Remote sensing indices and terrain variables for both datasets were extracted from National...

This data set represents initial forest communities developed for Isle Royale National Park. LANDIS-II requires an input data layer that contains the ages of each species cohort present within each cell of the landscape. To develop this layer, we matched the composition of forest inventory plots to a map of forest types, and randomly imputed U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Inventory plots within each matching forest type

We developed a LiDAR-based habitat model for the threatened Marbled Murrelet (MAMU) in the Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon, using a two-step approach. First, we tested the applicability of the LiDAR-based model developed for the Coos Bay District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the Siuslaw N.F. In the second step, we tested alternative habitat models developed with forest structural data and Murrelet survey data from the Siuslaw N.F. We compared the performance of each model to provide forest managers with the best predictive tool to guide habitat management for the Marbled Murrelet. This shapefile contains the probability of Marbled Murrelet occupancy values of each model for vegetation polygons defined...

These data were compiled to evaluate pinyon-juniper regeneration dynamics following stand-replacing wildfire and thinning treatments. Objectives of our study were to investigate vegetation community composition and tree recruitment in post-fire and post-thinning environments. These data represent plant and biological soil crust community composition and climatological records among intact, thinned, and burned pinyon–juniper woodlands. These data were collected in Mesa Verde National Park and Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park from 6/1/2021 to 6/10/2021 and from 03/1/2022 to 11/30/2022 at two burned and two intact pinyon-juniper ecosystems in Mesa Verde National Park only. These data were collected by the U.S. Geological...
These data consist of environmental covariates, measured plot-level and tree characteristics for seven coniferous tree species across the southwestern United States. The objectives of the study were to assess how growth characteristics of conifer tree species vary across environmental gradients and across the different tree species. These data represent conifer growth under a variety of stand and site characteristics. These data were collected in the summer of 2019, from sites across Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado, and collected by field crews directed by Matt Petrie (University of Nevada Las Vegas), Rob Hubbard (USDA Forest Service), Tom Kolb (Northern Arizona University) and John Bradford (U.S. Geological...
We sampled vegetation and breeding birds in Upper Mississippi River floodplain forest edge and interior areas to (1) measure Phalaris cover and (2) evaluate if the breeding bird assemblage responded to differences in Phalaris cover or other forest structure variables. Data are counts of birds collected during 3 surveys within 50m at each site using 10 minute point count methods. Vegetation was sampled using a releve technique at the bird count point within 10m of the point.

This dataset includes anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) screening results of 40 Barred Owls (Strix varia) collected in forested landscapes of Washington and Oregon from 2015-2017. Liver tissue was collected from each owl and screened for exposure to eight AR compounds, including 4 first-generation ARs (warfarin, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and coumachlor), and 4 second-generation ARs (brodifacoum, bromadionlone, difethialone, and difenacoum). Additionally, this dataset includes geographic, temporal, environmental, and biological attributes of individual owls that were identified as potential sources of variation in AR exposure and/or useful measurements for assessing AR exposure risk of sympatric northern spotted...
This data set contains mark-recapture information for individuals of Dicamptodon tenebrosus and Ascaphus truei marked for individual recognition. Amphibians represented in this data set were captured in 14 first-order perennial and seasonally intermittent streams in the East Fork of the South Fork of the Trask River in the northern Oregon Coast Range. Individuals are larval and mature aquatic Dicamptodon tenebrosus and larval Ascaphus truei. Of the Ascaphus truei larvae only individuals thought to be in their first summer when first captured are included (these are individuals whose knees had yet to emerge from under the anal flap or fold).

Detailed point center quarter sampling (Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg 1974) was conducted during late June along a 150-m long transect that started at a bird survey point. Four plots were sampled corresponding to the start, 50m, 100m and end points of each transect. At each of these four sample plots, species, diameter at breast height (dbh) and distance from the center of the plot were recorded tor trees (>8cm dbh) and saplings (≤8cm dbh). Number of standing snags (>8cm dbh and over 2 m tall) within 25m of the plot center were counted. Total basal area of each plot was estimated using a size 10 angle gauge and averaged over the four plots in each transect. As well, height of a representative canopy tree and understory...

These data were compiled to help understand how climate change may impact dryland pinyon-juniper ecosystems in coming decades, and how resource management might be able to minimize those impacts. Objective(s) of our study were to model the demographic rates of PJ woodlands to estimate the areas that may decline in the future vs. those that will be stable. We quantified populations growth rates across broad geographic areas, and identified the relative roles of recruitment and mortality in driving potential future changes in population viability in 5 tree species that are major components of these dry forests. We used this demographic model to project pinyon-juniper population stability under future climate conditions,...
Data are the result of fixed-area, time-constrained searches for terrestrial salamanders within and nearby a wildfire-affected area of the Willamette National Forest, OR. The spatial extent of the study was within one kilometer of the border of the Clark fire that burned an area of 2,009 ha in 2003. Site surveys occurred during March and April, 2005. An important feature of the data is that 100m2 sub-plots (nested within plots) were repeatedly searched for terrestrial salamanders independently up to nine times so that variation in the probability of capture could be estimated and accounted for concurrent with estimates of occupancy probability.
This data release includes data-processing scripts, data products, and associated metadata for a remote-sensing based approach to characterize vegetation sensitivity to droughts from 2000 through 2016 in the U.S. states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Drought sensitivity analysis was conducted in minimally-disturbed (‘intact’) forest and shrub-steppe ecosystems, defined as 1-km pixels (i.e., grid cells) that had not experienced major recent insect mortality or fire. Drought conditions were assessed using the multi-scalar standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), for which positive values indicate wetter that average conditions and negative values indicate drier than average conditions for a given...

These data consist of environmental covariates and estimated plot-level mortality of ponderosa pine trees. Environmental covariates include growing season temperature and soil moisture, and values are summarized into long-term mean conditions, and anomalies observed between forest inventory sampling events for each plot. Data also include plot locations (with uncertainty introduced by the US Forest Service to maintain private property rights), plot basal area, and several variables related to estimated mortality rate of ponderosa pine trees under various assumptions about basal area conditions.
Most of these data were collected in order to create a database of tree locations for use in calibrating remote sensing tools and products, particularly dead tree detection tools and canopy species maps. Data include tree locations, species identification, and status (live, dead, and, if dead, sometimes includes information on foliage and twig retention). They are a collection of different sampling efforts performed over several years, starting in a period of severe drought mortality. One csv table is included that shows data and validation results for an additional dataset that was used to test the NAIP derived dead tree detection model that is associated with this data release. Locations are not included for that...
