Values for area of all occupied habitat were only obtained for species whose occupancy models predicted a marked proportion of the species' population was likely present in non-forest habitats.

This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of plants 2) species specific plant traits 3) sampling locations and 4) environmental data. All sites were within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. Plant cover data were obtained from National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. Plant trait data was collected for these plots in 2014. This study aims to evaluate how traits of native and exotic plant species change along environmental gradients and what this suggests for plant competition and invasion.

Values for area of occupied habitat by each species were obtained as the predicted occupied proportion of each 900 square meter pixel (i.e., occupancy probability x 900) for all habitats, except permanent water, within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley Bird Conservation Region.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) computed rasters of pre-solved values for the watersheds draining to the pixel delineation point representing the watershed's percent forested land cover from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) 2016 data (land cover values 41-43). These values, which cover the conterminous United States at a scale of 30m pixel size, will be served in the National StreamStats Fire-Hydrology application to describe delineated watersheds ( https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ ). The StreamStats application provides access to spatial analysis tools that are useful for water-resources planning and management, and for engineering and design purposes. The map-based user interface can be used to delineate...

This data set represents initial forest communities developed for Isle Royale National Park. LANDIS-II requires an input data layer that contains the ages of each species cohort present within each cell of the landscape. To develop this layer, we matched the composition of forest inventory plots to a map of forest types, and randomly imputed U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Inventory plots within each matching forest type
This data release includes data and metadata on 1) avian diet 2) seed rain 3) understory plant composition 4) seedling abundance and 5) sampling locations for these sites. In addition it includes data on seedling abundance, grass cover and light levels for a grass removal/seed addition experiment . All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. This data, in particular, focuses on the basal area of different species of fruiting plants within 20m of all of the seedrain traps.

Values for area of sustainable forest habitat for each species were obtained as the predicted occupied proportion of each 900 square meter pixel (i.e., occupancy probability x 900) within all forest patches deemed large enough to harbor a sustainable population of the species. The area required for a sustainable population of each species was derived from credible intervals associated with population trends from historical (1966-2015) BBS data (Sauer and others, 2017). For each silvicolous bird species in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, we assumed the minimum sustainable population was the number of birds needed to ensure ≤1% probability that the population would be extirpated (i.e., drop below a quasi-extinction...

In cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) calculated over 40 different basin characteristics as part of preparing the Puerto Rico StreamStats application. These data were used to update the peak flow and low flow regression equations for Puerto Rico. These datasets are raster representations of various environmental, geological, and land use attributes within the Puerto Rico StreamStats 2020 study area, and will be served in the Puerto Rico StreamStats 2020 application to describe delineated watersheds. The StreamStats application provides access to spatial analytical tools that are useful for water-resources planning and management, and for engineering and...

This data release includes data and metadata on seedling counts and substrate cover in forest plots in Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaiʻi Island. Broadly, this study asks how seedlings densities relate to their microsites in terms of grass cover and nurse log and moss presence.
Specifically, this data set provides grass biomass data for plots where we implemented a grass removal/seed addition experiment in order to look at how these two factors relate to each other...

Mangrove species dominance on Pohnpei island, Federated States of Micronesia was modeled with two geospatial model types: k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF) and a common set of predictors. Dominant mangroves were defined as species comprising the largest basal area per field plot. The RF model predicted species dominance for each species separately, resulting in 8 maps (one for each species). The maps of Rhizophora stylosa and R. mucronata dominance were combined because these species were difficult to tell apart in field identification (resulting in the 7 maps presented here). The KNN model produced one map, which shows all species' dominance locations in one raster layer. The KNN model results were...

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. Specifically, this data set addresses bird-mediated seed rain as measured by aerial seed rain traps under koa and ʻōhiʻa trees along two transects moving from intact forest uphill into restoration...

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. The avian diet data, in particular, encompasses three years of fecal sample collection from spring time mist netting activities. We identified all seeds that were found in fecals to give an idea...

Values for predicted probabilities of avian species occupancy were determined using colonization-extinction models (MacKenzie and others, 2003) as implemented in R (Version 3.4.4; https://www.r-project.org/) via the ‘colext’ function of the Unmarked package (Version 0.12-0; Fiske and Chandler 2011). Performance of a null model (without covariates) and 153 additional models that assessed the effects of geographic coordinates and habitat context covariates were evaluated using Akaike information criteria (AIC; Burnham and Anderson, 2002). When more than one model had substantial support, their respective model weights were used to spatially predict occupancy relative to covariate influence. Predictive model covariates...

This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of bryophytes and other ground cover, 2) seedling abundance, composition, and rooting substrate and 3) sampling locations. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study aims to evaluate the role of bryophytes in seedling recruitment and thus forest regeneration in different forest types. We compared bryophyte composition and coverage between tree species (Acacia koa and Metrosideros polymorpha) and forest types (intact forest and restoration forest) and then sampled native woody seedling recruitment in the bryophytes as well as other ground covers, such as leaf litter, bare soil, and exotic...

All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites. This data in particular quantifies natural seedling regeneration in our sites, and the cover of different substrates and vegetation in the immediate area of these seedlings.

The KNN model produced one map, which shows all species' dominance locations in one raster layer. The KNN model results were the best based on field data and in field knowledge of the area. The KNN RStudio model and resulting map are shared here. The RF map and RStudio model can be found at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9JAE5JC.
