The acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data were collected and compiled to characterize the velocity patterns in channel of the Colorado River and in an adjacent zone of laterally recirculating flow (eddy). Topographic/bathymetric digital elevation models (DEMs) were collected and compiled to characterize erosion and deposition in the Colorado River and in an adjacent zone of laterally recirculating flow (eddy). Profiles of suspended-sediment concentration were also collected and compiled to characterize suspended sediment in the Colorado River. These datasets were collected during both average flow conditions and during a controlled flood that occurred in March 2008. Objectives of the study were to measure...

This data release pertains to a seepage investigation and dye tracing study conducted in the Big Creek watershed of Newton County, Arkansas. The dye tracing dataset consists of geospatial files of monitoring sites, dye injection location, and dye flow paths. Hydrologic systems in karst environments have a high degree of interconnectivity between surface water and groundwater systems. Because of this interconnectivity, activities which occur on the surface in karst environments have a direct impact on the water quality and quantity of karst groundwater. The Ozark Plateaus Physiographic region (Ozarks) of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri is an extensive karst area where many of the karst flow systems are recharged...

Remote sensing technologies, such as high-resolution sonar, can be used to collect more detailed information about the benthic characteristics of macro habitats in the Illinois River. Multibeam echosounders collect multibeam and sidescan simultaneously, providing high-resolution images of the riverbed. Sidescan images, in raster format, show the recorded intensity of acoustic signal returns from the riverbed. The acoustic data were collected from the East Pit of the Hanson Pits (where accessible) of the Marseilles reach June 27, 2018, and August 25, 2020.

Hydroacoustic (sonar) data were collected for the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota Rivers for the development of high-resolution bathymetry and sidescan imagery. Combining these data in a GIS can provide key components to characterizing physical benthic habitat for native mussels in a riverine environment. These information needs were highly desired by the National Park Service to more accurately assess environmental factors that influence native mussel distribution. The collaborative effort was funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF), to help maintain and enhance Minnesota’s environment and natural resources.

Hydroacoustic (sonar) data were collected for the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota Rivers for the development of high-resolution bathymetry and sidescan imagery. Small areas containing priority mussel habitat had additional collection efforts to map water velocities and bottom composition. Egg mat retention trials were conducted with walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) eggs in an experimental flume tank, seeded directly on egg mats (test retention efficiency) and hand dispersed in flowing flume water to simulate spawning over egg mats (test capture efficiency) with and without alternate substrate. In the field study, we measured number of eggs collected on mats and with bottom drift nets in the Detroit River to compare capture effectiveness. The field collection data describe the number, date of collection, and exact collection location of target species (walleye and lake whitefish). The flume trial data include number of eggs retained or collected, water velocity,...

This dataset contains spatial datasets of topographic and bathymetric survey data in addition to data table the shapefile data collected at the 3 focal areas of research included in the Sustainable Rivers Program (SRP) in the Allegheny River that were collected and processed in collaboration with US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The dataset is a combination of terrestrial topographic and bathymetry data measured by Trimble R10 Model 2 GNSS survey equipment or a FlowTracker2 Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The FlowTracker2 was used for flow measurements and water depth and spatial location of each flow measurement point were used to calculate river bottom bathymetry at those locations. Additionally, National...

This represents the flowline network in Sagina Bay Restoration Assessment (SBRA). It is attributed with the number of disconnections between the reach and the connecting river system. These data will help identify the condition of hydrologic separation between potential restoration areas and the connecting river system. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections such as culverts between the reach and the rivers requiring no flow network modification to restore the area. These data include parameter inputs from external sources current to 2016. For an updated data set, including parameter inputs up to 2023, please see: Jaenicke, M.E., Hopkins, A.L., Kowalski, K.P., Bozimowski, A.A., and Sanocki, C.A., 2024, Saginaw...

This dataset is the output of a python script/ArcGIS model that identifes dikes as having a difference in elevation above a certain threshold. If the elevation difference was below a certain threshold the area was not considered a dike; however, if the difference in elevation between two points was significantly high then the area was marked as a dike. Areas continuous with eachother were considered part of the same dike. Post processing occured. Users examined the data output, comparing the proposed dike locations to aerial imagery, flowline data, and the DEM. Dikes that appeared to be false positives were deleted from the data set. These data include parameter inputs from external sources current to 2016. For...
Well-established conservation planning principles and techniques framed by geodesign were used to assess the restorability of areas that historically supported coastal wetlands along the U.S. shore of western Lake Erie. The resulting analysis supported planning efforts to identify, prioritize, and track wetland restoration opportunity and investment in the region. To accomplish this, publicly available data, criteria derived from the regional managers and local stakeholders, and geospatial analysis were used to form an ecological model for spatial prioritization (Western Lake Erie Restoration Assessmente (WLERA)). Within the 192,618 ha study area that was bounded by the mouths of the Detroit River, MI to the north...

Floodplain inundation is believed to be the dominant physical driver of an array of ecosystem patterns and processes in the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Here, we present the relative elevation of a slope-detrended floodplain terrain surface and river mile location used to map surface water depths derived from gaging locations along UMRS, as described in Van Appledorn et al. (2021; doi: 10.1002/rra.3628). We excluded areas permanently wetted (aquatic areas), surfaces in agricultural production, roads, and developed areas. The data are intended for use in geospatial analyses of UMRS floodplain ecosystem patterns and processes.

This dataset is a combination of annual Probability of Streamflow Permanence (PROSPER) predictions, Northwest Stream Temperature (NorWeST) predictions of monthly mean stream temperatures for August of each year, and predicted monthly streamflow discharge for stream reaches in the Pacific Northwest from the USGS database of natural monthly streamflow estimates, U.S., 2004-2015. The PROSPER model provides predictions of the annual probability of a 30-meter stream segment maintaining year-round streamflow. The NorWeST model provides annual predictions of monthly mean stream temperature for August for 1-kilometer stream segments. Finally, predictions of natural monthly streamflow were combined with NorWeST and PROSPER...

Clean water is important for a variety of uses, including drinking, recreation, and as habitat for aquatic species. Nonpoint-source pollution, such as nutrients, sediment, and pesticides from agricultural runoff, is a major cause of impaired water quality in the United States . Vegetation and soil in natural land cover help to remove pollutants from runoff water before it reaches streams and other waterways by slowing water flow and physically trapping sediment. To assess the spatial distribution of water purification potential in the southeastern United States, we mapped the demand for purification as the total area of agricultural land and the supply of natural land cover in the flowpath over which water moves...

Lock and dam closures along the Illinois Waterway occurred in summer of 2020, resulting in a prolonged reduction in traffic of large vessels along the Waterway. To study the response of Illinois Waterway water quality and fish community, ongoing water quality and fish Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRMP) elements of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration program were expanded from the La Grange reach of the Lower Illinois to eight pools and reaches of the entire Illinois Waterway. This multi-agency effort occurred in each year before (2019), during (2020), and after (2021) the extended lock and dam closure. This dataset contains observations from this project, including a file of site information and LTRMP-style...
