The development of water resources to satisfy urban water needs has had serious impacts on freshwater ecosystem integrity and on valuable ecosystem services, but positive trends are emerging that point the way toward a solution. We demonstrate this through case studies of water resource development in and around five large urban areas: Los Angeles, Phoenix, New York, San Antonio, and Atlanta. Providing freshwater ecosystems with the water flows necessary to sustain their health, while meeting the other challenges of urban water management, will require greatly increased water productivity in conjunction with improvements in the degree to which planning and management take ecosystem needs into account. There is great...

This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. Oligochaetes were identified to species if possible, chironomids were identified to genus, as adult specimens are needed for specific identification, and other taxa...

This data release pertains to a seepage investigation and dye tracing study conducted in the Big Creek watershed of Newton County, Arkansas. The seepage dataset includes geospatial files of discharge measurement points and zero-flow observations along with vector lines delineating losing and gaining stream reaches. The dye tracing dataset consists of geospatial files of monitoring sites, dye injection location, and dye flow paths. Hydrologic systems in karst environments have a high degree of interconnectivity between surface water and groundwater systems. Because of this interconnectivity, activities which occur on the surface in karst environments have a direct impact on the water quality and quantity of karst...

These topographic/bathymetric digital elevation models (DEMs) were collected and compiled to characterize erosion and deposition in the Colorado River and in an adjacent zone of laterally recirculating flow (eddy) during both average flow conditions and during a controlled flood that occurred in March 2008. The objectives of the study were to measure changes sandbar morphology that occurred during changes in discharge associated with the controlled flood. These data were collected between February 6 and March 31, 2008 in a 1-mile study reach on the Colorado River within Grand Canyon National Park beginning 44.5 miles downstream from Lees Ferry, Arizona. These data were collected by the USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring...

Vegetation change is an important issue facing managers at Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These data were created using high-resolution imagery collected in the winter of 2017 which was compared to the vegetation map of the National Park published in 2000 (project imagery collected in 1994 and 1996). These data review where vegetation cover type, density, and pattern have changed since imagery collection for the 2000 publication and provide a proposed reason for the change.

Here we present the data collected during a mark-recapture study on freshwater mussels in Bruce Creek, Walton County, Florida. These data were used to evaluate the non-lethal impacts of a gill sampling protocol to assess gravidity of freshwater mussels. Data were collected every four weeks, or as weather permitted, to be able to monitor the reproductive status of each mussel every month of the year. The dataset includes unique tag numbers to identify specific female mussels captured and recaptured during this study. Genus and species were identified, and the gravidity status was evaluated for each individual mussel.

Lake Powell retains most of the phosphorus that it receives, leading to downstream phosphorus limitation. These data were compiled to examine controls on phosphorus cycling below Lake Powell in the Colorado River and from storm inputs from the Paria River. Objectives of our study were to determine how several forms of phosphorus, both organic and inorganic, were cycled under varying dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH, reflecting the range of values observed in the river over the years. These data represent nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, and carbon concentrations, water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature), sediment composition, total protein, and extracellular enzyme activity (alkaline phosphatase)....

These data were compiled for/to modeling efforts for U.S. Bureau of Reclamation National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analyses for the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, Arizona. Objective(s) of our study were to create revised monthly Lake Powell elevations and outflows from Bureau of Reclamation Colorado River Mid-term Modeling System (CRMMS) traces that incorporate the alternatives in the sEIS documents and indicate when potential actions may occur and how that changes water movement and storage. These data represent monthly hydrologies for Lake Powell: inflow, outflow, and elevation forecasts for 2024-2027, as well as volumes of water in outflows for different water mangement strategies in NEPA supplemental...

A digital elevation model represented by a triangulated irregular network (TIN) was developed for proposed channel restoration at Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada. The TIN was derived from lidar (light imaging, detection, and ranging) of quality level 1 collected in April 2018 by Quantum Spatial (Quantum Spatial Inc, 2018) for the Bureau of Land Management. The DEM also includes points surveyed in August 13-16, 2019, using a real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The lidar data are not included in this USGS publication due to BLM data-release restrictions for this dataset. Contact Bureau of Land Management, Nevada,...
This point shapefile contains information on 476 locations surveyed using a single-base real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) in Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada, August 14-15, 2019. The points were collected at 30-second intervals at control points and hydraulic structures and 5-second intervals at topographic points throughout the study area. The points were used as vertical precision verification for lidar data, editing the triangulated irregular network in locations of dense vegetation and surface water, locating streamflow measurement sites, creating hydraulic structures in the hydraulic model, and determining...

Remote sensing technologies, such as high-resolution sonar, can be used to collect more detailed information about the benthic and water column characteristics of macro habitats in the Illinois River. Multibeam echosounders (MBES) collect multibeam and sidescan simultaneously, providing high-resolution images of the riverbed. Sidescan images, in raster format, show the recorded intensity of acoustic signal returns from the riverbed. The acoustic data were collected from the main and side channels (where accessible) of the Dresden reach June 4 – 28, 2018.

Hydroacoustic (sonar) data were collected for the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Minnesota Rivers for the development of high-resolution bathymetry and sidescan imagery. Small areas containing priority mussel habitat had additional collection efforts to map water velocities and bottom composition. Combining these data in a GIS can provide key components to characterizing physical benthic habitat for native mussels in a riverine environment. These information needs were highly desired by the National Park Service to more accurately assess environmental factors that influence native mussel distribution. The collaborative effort was funded by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) Environment...
Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2021 data to...

Floodplain inundation is believed to be the dominant physical driver of an array of ecosystem patterns and processes in the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Here, we present the relative elevation of a slope-detrended floodplain terrain surface and river mile location used to map surface water depths derived from gaging locations along UMRS, as described in Van Appledorn et al. (2021; doi: 10.1002/rra.3628). We excluded areas permanently wetted (aquatic areas), surfaces in agricultural production, roads, and developed areas. The data are intended for use in geospatial analyses of UMRS floodplain ecosystem patterns and processes.

Floodplain inundation is believed to be the dominant physical driver of an array of ecosystem patterns and processes in the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Here, we present a time series of daily surface water inundation depths (in feet) for floodplain surfaces in the UMRS. The time series data are for the months of April through September of every year since 1940. These months were chosen because it approximates the period during which most biophysical processes such as vegetation metabolism and biogeochemical cycling are likely to be strongest across the longitudinal gradient of the UMRS. Data were derived from a geospatial model of surface water inundation developed for the UMRS and described in Van Appledorn...
