Geochemical data for aqueous, mine tailings, and sediment samples collected from the Big River and Meramec River drainage basins in southeastern Missouri are presented. The Big River drains historical lead, zinc, and barite mining districts, including the Old Lead Belt (OLB). Underground mining in the OLB resulted in large mine-waste chat piles and tailings impoundments that have released material laden with lead, zinc, and other trace elements to the Big River drainage basin. The Meramec River has also been affected by mining-related material transported by the Big River. Since the late 1980s, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been involved in investigations into the effects of mining on the Big River. The...

Early studies of soil formation highlighted several key factors that together determine the degree of soil pedogenesis, which include climate, organisms (including vegetation), topography, and parent material (Jenny H.; 1941; Factors of Soil Formation, a System of Quantitative Pedology; https://doi.org/10.2134/agronj1941.00021962003300090016x). A soil chronosequence is defined as a series of soils in which all soil-forming factors except time are similar, where time is represented by soil or landform age. In 1978, the late Denis Marchand launched a project to identify, sample, and analyze soil profiles from seven soil chronosequences in the Western United States. The resulting datasets were compiled as part of a...

The geochemical data included here were generated as part of a Technical Assistance Agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Rio Tinto Exploration based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Beginning in November of 2015, we began a project to reanalyze up to 60,000 archived sample splits originally collected as part of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) project from selected areas in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. A small amount (approximately 0.25 g) of sieved <75 micron sample material was retrieved from the USGS National Geochemical Sample Archive for geochemical analysis. These samples were analyzed...
The Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field and surrounding region is made up of over 3 billion years of geologic history, with 300+ separate rock types. To increase our understanding of the evolution of this active system and direct priorities for sample collection and field study, we compiled whole rock geochemical datasets from numerous thesis and papers (17 in total). We present these data in a standardized format and include location information and details on analytical methods when available.

Salinity levels in streams and tributaries of the Colorado River Basin have been a major concern for years. Recently, the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) program expanded stream monitoring networks including the number of sites where continuous (15-minute) specific conductance is measured in the Colorado River Headwaters and Gunnison River subbasins located east of the Colorado-Utah state line (hereafter, UCOL). Salinity and total dissolved solids (TDS) can be estimated using specific conductance and water type as a proxy (McCleskey et al., 2023); thus, the UCOL is an ideal basin to apply the proxy. The data presented in this data release, including monitoring...

In July 1992 soils were sampled from six dune fields in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan near Wilderness State Park, about 10 miles southwest of Mackinaw City. The dune fields represent a soil chronosequence, where all soil forming factors except time are held constant (climate, organisms, relief, and parent material). These sandy lake terrace soils are Entisols and Spodosols (Podzols), with ages ranging from 3,000 to 11,000 years. The samples were collected to examine podzolization and associated changes in soil properties. Samples collected for this study were assigned categorical profile and layer level descriptions for observable qualities such as soil color, structure, and texture at the time of collection....

Dissolved noble gas data were collected using a portable mass spectrometer mounted on inflatable rafts on the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs, Colorado and the Virgin River near La Verkin, Utah. Data were collected approximately every 3 to 10 minutes for a suite of noble gases including helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), and xenon (Xe). Patterns in observed dissolved He concentrations were used to locate diffuse discharge of saline geothermal water, which commonly have elevated He concentrations. Diffuse groundwater discharge can be difficult to locate and quantify, and the dissolved He signals are a novel approach to understanding diffuse geothermal discharge to rivers. Dissolved He data were...

Freshwater salinization is an emerging water quality issue for non-tidal streams and rivers in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (CBW), USA region. A model was developed to predict specific conductance (SC; a proxy for salinity) conditions across the CBW and departures from background SC. Discrete observations of SC from 1999-2016 were acquired from a published SC data inventory and explanatory variables describing sources of SC were compiled from several sources. Random forests modeling was conducted to predict SC at four time periods (1999-2001, 2004-2006, 2009-2011, and 2014-2016) at all non-tidal National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2.1 (NHDPlusV2.1; 1:100K scale) stream reaches. These predictions were then...

This data release includes raw detrital zircon U-Pb data for Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Gunnison block, central Colorado, USA. Detrital zircon U-Pb data for five samples of metasedimentary rock (totaling 1459 zircon U-Pb dates) were acquired via laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at the University of Arizona LaserChron Center. The data provide constraints on the sediment provenance, maximum depositional age, and timing of metamorphism of these metasedimentary rocks, providing insights on the crustal and tectonic evolution of the Gunnison block and Yavapai Province.

Geoheritage is a term which lies at the intersection of science, society, and sustainability and is applied to significant geologic features and landforms that have scientific, educational, cultural, economic, and aesthetic value. Many geologic sites have enriched society through the geoheritage values: scientific research and education, cultural significance, economic opportunities, and aesthetic appeal. The Geoheritage Sites of the Nation geodatabase (GDB) provides an initial inventory of geoheritage sites to showcase the geodiversity and natural heritage throughout the United States (U.S.) and its territories. Sites included in this inventory were selected from compiled geosite references of in situ geologic...

Global demand for lithium, the primary component of lithium-ion batteries, greatly exceeds known supplies and this imbalance is expected to increase as the world transitions away from fossil fuel energy sources. The goal of this work was to calculate the total lithium mass in brines of the Reynolds oolite unit of the Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas using predicted lithium concentrations from a machine-learning model. This research was completed collaboratively between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment—Office of the State Geologist. The Smackover Formation is a laterally extensive petroleum and brine system in the Gulf Coast region that includes locally high...
