The Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District has historically had the greatest mining and exploration activity within the district and is the subject of this report. Between 1880 and 1983, the mines within the Juneau Gold Belt produced 6.7 million oz gold, 3.1 million oz silver, and 45 million lbs lead, all of which had a total value of about $157,000,000. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search which included unpublished private company reports, U.S. Geological Survey, State of Alaska, and Bureau reports, personal interviews, and Bureau field work. The field work during 1985 revealed the locations of numerous adits, shafts and other old mine workings, many of which were...

As part of a cooperative project during 1986 and 1987, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys studied the mineral development potential of the Chilkat Peninsula and Islands, Alaska, as part of the larger Juneau Mining District study. About 4/5 of the area is within the Alaska State Chilkat and Chilkat Islands State Parks and not open to mineral entry. This study located four new (or previously unreported) gold- copper prospects. One of these, the Road Cut prospect, was examined by trenching, drilling and geophysics. While sufficient grades and tonnages were not delineated by this work to constitute an economic deposit, they are sufficient to encourage...

The Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples Database (CMDB) contains chemistry and geologic information for historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits in the United States. In addition, the database contains samples from archetypal deposits from 27 other countries in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Samples were obtained from archived ore collections under the U.S. Geological Survey's project titled "Quick Assessment of Rare and Critical Metals in Ore Deposits: A National Assessment" (2008 to 2013) in an effort to begin an assessment of the Nations' previously mined ore deposits for critical minerals. Mineralized and altered rock samples were provided by the Colorado...

This dataset is a compilation of boundary location polygons for 167 hydraulic mine pits located in northern California. This dataset was compiled from three sources, Topographically Occurring Mine Symbols (TOMS) database produced by the California Department of Conservation (2001), Yeend (1974), and on-screen digitizing, using current (2015) satellite imagery, of additional hydraulic mine pits not contained in either of these sources. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a geodatabase containing mineral-related geospatial data for 19 countries of interest in the Indo-Pacific region (area of study): Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. The data can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the area of study. This geodatabase reflects the USGS ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity...

Data on gold deposits are extracted from an existing publication to enable analysis. The data comprise selected portions of a data set that are published by C.J. Hodgson in "Preliminary Report on the Timmins-Kirkland Lake Area Gold Deposits File," which is available online as a digital image of a report. As an image, the data set cannot be analyzed. Consequently, selected portions of the data set are re-published here in a text file. The datum for the latitude and longitude is not specified in the report and is assumed to be the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27). The Ontario Geological Survey, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ontario, Canada kindly granted permission to re-publish these data. Hodgson,...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release (ver. 1.2, April 2022) contains a set of previously unpublished geochemical data from project studies of primitive areas in central Idaho, including the Clear Creek-Upper Big Deer Creek Area, the Salmon River Breaks and Sawtooth Primitive Areas, and the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area. The purpose of the USGS Idaho Primitive Area studies, conducted from 1966 to 1984, was to describe the geology, determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics, and evaluate the mineral resource potential of these primitive areas and adjacent study areas. In the case of the Idaho Primitive Area study (Cater and others, 1973), the primitive area covers 1,915 square miles; adjacent...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken a mineral resources assessment for tungsten for a portion of the Great Basin in parts of western Nevada and east-central California. This data release provides the Great Basin Tungsten Database: the geospatial and geologic data, and results of chemical analyses for 46,955 samples collected in the assessment area, extracted from the USGS National Geochemical Database. These rock records were collected as part of various programs and projects at the USGS and analyzed from 1963 to 2015. The database represents rock records, each comprising one best value chemical determination for each analyzed chemical species, that include skarns, carbonate lithologies (for example,...

The Tofty mining district, near Manley Hot Springs in north-central Alaska, has been the scene of placer gold mining since 1906 and has produced more than 100,000 tr oz of gold and several hundred tons of byproduct tin, in the form of placer cassiterite. Although open -cut mining methods are currently employed, drift-mining methods were formerly utilized to mine the gold- and tin-bearing gravels. As part of the current Bureau of Mines Alaska -wide assessment of critical and strategic minerals, splits of concentrate samples collected in the 1950's from 11 tailings piles representative of the presently inactive Tofty drift mines were re-analyzed in 1983 for tantalum and columbium (niobium). Most of these concentrates...

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines work completed in 1986, the second year of the Juneau Mining District study. Fifty mines, prospects, and occurrences were examined and 638 samples were collected for analysis during 1986. Metallurgical samples were collected from seven deposits and preliminary tests of cyanide amenability have been completed for five of these....
