This dataset includes soil properties and microbial data from lake margin soils throughout the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. Data include multiple lakes that are defined as either stable or drying. Lake margin vegetation communities include graminoid, shrub, and forest. Sols are separated into organic and mineral layers. Microbial data includes different phospholipid fatty acids and soil enzyme activity data for multiple enzymes involved in C,N, and P cycling. Data also includes information on respiration rate constants (k) and labile substrate pool (Ao) from soil incubations.

Metals are used in primary producer metabolic pathways, such as photosynthesis and the acquisition of macronutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), yet we often do not know their potential as limiting nutrients in freshwaters. In the Great Lakes, metals have sometimes been identified as limiting the acquisition of macronutrients, mostly in off-shore waters that are relatively isolated from tributary inputs and sediment interactions. We hypothesized that another area where metals might be important was within harmful algal blooms (HABs). Harmful algal blooms are more likely to occur where N and P loads are elevated due to human activities, but short-term growth assays still often find summer bloom communities are...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release presents tabular data on nitrogen concentrations and loads for multiple nitrogen species, and river discharge data used in the analysis of data collected from October 1994 to September 2021. Data on flow and nitrogen concentrations were analyzed using the USGS Exploration and Graphics for RivEr Trends (EGRET) R package, and the method of Weighted Regression on Time Discharge and Season (WRTDS). Data and outputs summarized are for water-quality data collected from 17 water-quality monitoring stations in the Long Island Sound watershed. Specific data in tabular format for this release include: calculated annual nitrogen concentration and loads, calculated annual flow-normalized...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This spatial data set was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to represent the amount of wet deposition of reduced nitrogen in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States (Hydro Region 17; Major River Basin 7 (MRB7)) during 2002.

This spatial data set was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to represent the amount of total nitrogen and total phosphorus discharged to surface waters in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States (Hydro Region 17; Major River Basin 7 (MRB7)) during 2002 from individual permitted wastewater facilities.

The caribou populations of southwest Alaska have declined precipitously over the past decade or more, and the total population of this expansive region currently is 80% below the populations of the late 90’s to early 2000’s. This research is a collaborative effort among the principal managers of this resource to directly address the causes of this decline. The goals of this project was to mechanistically link climate, soil N cycling, plant morphological and nutritional phenology, and caribou population dynamics, by collecting high-quality information to knit together ecosystem function across several trophic levels and at a range of spatial and temporal scales.

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads, and changes in loads, in major rivers across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been calculated using monitoring data from the Chesapeake Bay River Input Monitoring (RIM) Network stations for the period 1985 through 2022. Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment that was exported from each of the RIM watersheds.
