The goal of this study was to develop a suite of inter-related water quality monitoring approaches capable of modeling and estimating the spatial and temporal gradients of particulate and dissolved total mercury (THg) concentration and particulate and dissolved methyl mercury (MeHg) concentration in surface waters across the Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD). This suite of monitoring approaches included: a) data collection at fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, b) spatial mapping using boat-mounted, flow-through, sensors and c) satellite-based remote sensing. The focus of this specific Child Page is to present all data collected during the underway boat mapping component...

The Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD) is contaminated with legacy mercury (Hg) from historical mining and mineral processing activities throughout the watershed, as well as from contemporary atmospheric and industrial inputs. The current project was designed for the purpose of developing high-resolution spatial and temporal models for estimating concentrations of mercury species in surface waters of the SSJRD. The field component of the project brings together three high-resolution platforms for collecting water-quality data (fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, spatial mapping using boat-mounted flow-through sensors, and satellite-based remote sensing) coupled with...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and co-occurring inorganic and organic contaminants are widely distributed in the environment and understanding their surface water sources is critical for water resource management. In November 2021, 13 sites were sampled along a stream reach in the Neshaminy Creek basin in southeastern Pennsylvania utilizing a time of travel sampling approach. The reach had known potential PFAS source inputs and documented PFAS detections in water samples. This data release describes the sampling approach, sample processing, laboratory analytical methods, and contains the results. Site (Table_1_NC_2021_Site_Info) and constituent information (Table_2_Constituents) are provided in tab...

Concentrations of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which together comprise total organic carbon, were measured in a reconnaissance study at sampling sites in the Upper Klamath River, Lost River, and Klamath Straits Drain in 2013–16. In addition, data for total nitrogen and chlorophyll a were collected. Optical absorbance and fluorescence properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM), which contains DOC, also were analyzed. Excitation-Emission matrices (EEMs) were produced for each sample and full absorbance spectra. The EEMs were compiled and key data points and regions of the spectra were extracted from each site. Parallel factor analysis was used to decompose the optical fluorescence...

Two spectroradiometers, a Malvern Panalytical Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec® 4 Hi-Res (hereafter referred to as ASD spectrometer) and a high sensitivity spectrometer, OCEAN-HDX-VIS-NIR®, from Ocean Optics (hereafter referred to as HDX) were used to collect reflectance measurements of materials in a controlled indoor setting at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab in Denver, Colorado on July 8, 2022 to enable spectrometer wavelength position comparisons. The ASD spectrometer has a spectral range of 350 to 2500 nm. Malvern Panalytical reports bandpass values of 3 nm in the VNIR (visible and near infrared, 350 to 1000 nm) and 8 nm in the SWIR (shortwave infrared, 1001 to 2500 nm). The ASD collects 2151 channels of spectral...

Calibration panels are used as reference materials with known reflectance characteristics to convert remote sensing image pixel values to scientific units such as reflectance. At the time of purchase, the panel vendor typically provides the customer with reflectance data for the panel. The vendor-provided spectral data as a reference for each panel’s reflectance values at the time of purchase. Over time, the panel’s reflectance can change due to exposure of its surface to elements such as the sun, dirt, dust, sand, and more during the panel’s use in the field. The purpose of this dataset is to enable the assessment of calibration panel reflectance changes over time. In addition to the vendor-provided spectral data...

Conventional methods of assessing organic matter (OM) thermal maturity have limitations and often fail to reflect the geochemical heterogeneity between individual organic phases in mudstone samples. Vitrinite and solid bitumen reflectance, for example, is often measured to estimate OM thermal maturity but is restricted to specific types of OM. Alternative methods deserve exploration. This dataset provides the optical reflectance values that support a study investigating the application of fine-scale geochemical techniques to estimate OM thermal maturity. The study proposes a new analytical procedure using field emission-electron probe micro-analyzer (FE-EPMA). This instrument analyzes both the major elemental composition...
