The primary objectives of this study were twofold. The first was to configure an established public domain particle trajectory model (General NOAA Oceanographic Modeling Environment – GNOME) (NOAA Hazardous Materials Response and Assessment Division – web site) location file representing the oceanographic settings surrounding the Aleutian Chain and use it to numerically explore the threat of disabled ships grounding on or near sensitive environmental habitats.The products of this phase of the study will be a working model of the region, loaded with approximately three years of realistic potential scenarios, and a large data base archive of greater then 3 million “pseudo ship” trajectories each of 7 days duration....

Accidental introductions of rodents present one of the greatest threats to indigenous island biota. On uninhabited remote islands, such introductions are most likely to come from shipwrecks. Here we use a comprehensive database of shipwrecks in Western Alaska to model the frequency of shipwrecks per Aleutian and Bering Sea island, taken as a proxy for the likelihood of rodent introductions, using physical variables, and the intensity of nearby fishing traffic and activity as predictors. Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NWB LCC) partners are working to collectively design a sustainable future for the people, cultures, and ecosystems in the region. To begin this difficult task, the partners asked for a review and synthesis of existing natural resource management plans, covering both countries and all four states, provinces and territories. The NWB LCC Steering Committee believes that it is important to both be in alignment with current goals and objectives for land and resources, and to build on the work already completed by agencies, organizations and research institutions. The geodiversity approach uses topography to define landscape features. Topography can be a proxy for ecological function. For example, topography influences the solar radiation available for plants and animals, the soil characteristics through the likelihood for erosion and deposition, and the characteristics of hydrologic features. Therefore, similar geodiversity types should have the potential for similar ecological function even as the climate changes. We classified the landscape into three topographic feature categories: canyons, ridges, and slopes. Each topographic feature was then clustered into distinct geodiversity types.
