Water depth, turbidity, and current velocity time-series data were collected in Liberty Island Conservation Bank (WVA) in 2017. The turbidity sensors were not calibrated to suspended-sediment concentration at this location. Typically, each zip folder for a deployment period contains two data files from a velocimeter and one data file from a CTD, each of which include data from an optical backscatter sensor. --------- Data were collected from several sites in Little Holland Tract (LHT) and Liberty Island (LI), including the Liberty Island Conservation Bank (LICB), from 2015 to 2017. Table 1 (below) lists the deployment name (DLXXX) and dates for each sampling station location. Station names starting with ‘H’ are...
Water depth, turbidity, and current velocity time-series data were collected in Liberty Island from 2015 to 2017. Depth (from pressure) and velocity were measured in high-frequency (8 Hz) bursts. Burst means represent tidal stage and currents, and burst data can be used to determine wave height, period, and direction, and wave-orbital velocity. The turbidity sensors were calibrated to suspended-sediment concentration measured in water samples collected on site. The calibration and fit parameters for all of the turbidity sensors used in the study are tabulated and provided with the data. Data were sequentially added to this data release as they were collected and post-processed. Typically, each zip folder...
Bathymetric change grids covering the periods of time from 1934 to 2011, from 2011 to 2018, and from 1934 to 2018 are presented. The grids cover a portion of the Mokelumne River, California, starting at its terminus at the San Joaquin River and moving upriver to the confluences of the north and south branches of the Mokelumne. Positive grid values indicate accretion, or a shallowing of the surface bathymetric surface, and negative grid values indicate erosion, or a deepening of the bathymetric surface. Bathymetry data sources include the U.S. Geological Survey, California Department of Water Resources, and NOAA's National Ocean Service.

Management efforts of the tidally-restricted Herring River in Wellfleet, MA include research to understand pre-restoration sediment conditions. Submerged multiparameter sondes that measure optical turbidity were deployed at four sites landward and seaward of the Herring River restriction. Periodically, the sites were visited and additional turbidity measurements were collected with a handheld multiparameter sonde, and water samples were collected for determination of suspended-sediment concentration (SSC). The handheld turbidity measurements were regressed against SSC using a repeated median regression to determine a calibration curve for calibrating the turbidity time-series data to SSC. The SSC derived from the...

The development of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) growth model within the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) model leads to a change in SAV biomass. The SAV biomass is computed from temperature, nutrient loading and light predictions obtained from coupled hydrodynamics (temperature), bio-geochemistry (nutrients) and bio-optical (light) models. In exchange, the growth of SAV sequesters or contributes nutrients from the water column and sediment layers. The presence of SAV modulates current and wave attenuation and consequently affects modelled sediment transport. The model of West Falmouth Harbor in Massachusetts, USA was simulated to study the seagrass growth/dieback pattern in a hypothetical...

Transport of material in an estuary is important for water quality and hazards concern. We studied these processes in the Hudson River Estuary, located along the northeast coast of the U.S. using the COAWST numerical modeling system. A skill assessment of the COAWST model for the 3-D salinity structure of the estuary has been successfully studied in the past, and the present research extended that understanding to look at both physical and numerical mixing. The model grid extends from the south at the Battery, NY to the north in Troy, NY. The simulation is performed from March 25 to July 11, 2005 (111 days). Hydrodynamic and sediment transport time-series data, including water depth, velocity, turbidity, conductivity, and temperature, were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center within two embayments of San Francisco Bay. Data were collected in San Pablo Bay and Grizzly Bay from June to August 2019 at seven unique stations. Data files are grouped by area (shallows of San Pablo Bay, channel of San Pablo Bay, and shallows of Grizzly Bay). Each shallow site contained a variety of sensors located on two tripods and one surface mooring, while the channel site consisted of one tripod. Users are advised to assess data quality carefully, and to check metadata for instrument information,...
Suspended-sediment transport is a critical element governing the geomorphology of tidal marshes and estuaries. Marsh elevation, relative to sea level, is maintained by both organic material and the deposition of inorganic sediment. Additionally, horizontal marsh extent is altered by lateral erosion and accretion. In wetlands within and near Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, parts of the salt marsh are eroding relatively rapidly. To understand the connection between sediment fluxes and these processes, the U.S. Geological Survey made oceanographic and water-quality measurements from August 2, 2016, to January 28, 2017, to quantify suspended-sediment concentration and sediment transport in tidal channels...

The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST; Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate ocean circulation, waves, and sediment transport in Cape Cod Bay, MA. Larger scale simulations of the US East Coast (Warner and Kalra, 2022) were used to drive numerical grids covering the Gulf of Maine (~1000m resolution) with a two-way nested downscaled region into Cape Cod Bay (~250m resolution). Results were analyzed to investigate bay-scale dynamics of net transport, seafloor elevation changes, and net sediment fluxes. Those results were further used to drive a coastal scale grid that stretched along ~17km of the coast from the Cape Cod Canal to Sandy Neck Beach. This nearshore...

This portion of the USGS data release presents sediment grain-size data from samples collected on the Elwha River delta, Washington, in July 2017 (USGS Field Activity Number 2017-638-FA). Surface sediment was collected on July 20, 2017 at a total of 80 locations using a small ponar, or 'grab', sampler from the R/V Frontier in water depths between about 1 and 17 m around the delta. An additional 31 samples were collected by hand at low tide. A handheld global satellite navigation system (GNSS) receiver was used to determine the locations of sediment samples. Grab samples that yielded less than 50 g of sediment were omitted from analysis. The grain-size distributions of samples that yielded more than 50 g of sediment...

Bed sediment samples were collected in San Pablo Bay and Grizzly Bays on eight days from June through November 2019, to analyze for sediment properties including bulk density, particle size distribution, and percent organic carbon. Sediment samples were collected from a small vessel near pre-established USGS instrument moorings using a Gomex box corer that was subsampled with three push cores (37 mm in diameter) per Gomex core. Six subsamples were collected from the top 5 centimeters (cm) of each push core, a few push cores included the top 8 cm. The top two subsamples were each 0.5 cm thick, and all following subsamples were each 1 cm thick. Push core samples from the first, third, and fifth centimeter depth were...

Data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center to investigate the influence of wind waves on sediment dynamics in two flooded agricultural tracts in the northern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta: Little Holland Tract and Liberty Island. This effort is part of a large interdisciplinary study led by the USGS California Water Science Center and funded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to investigate how shallow-water habitats in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta function and whether they provide good habitat for native fish species, including the Delta smelt. Elevated turbidity is a requirement for Delta smelt habitat, and turbidity is largely comprised of suspended sediment....
