These data were compiled to understand the responses of dryland ecosystem properties to long-term simulated atmospheric nitrogen deposition. Objective(s) of our study were to uncover any changes in soil biogeochemistry and ecosystem properties to long-term nitrogen amendments. These data represent ecosystem property data compiled over the nine-year history of a nitrogen deposition simulation experiment. These data were collected from three sites representing a gradient of soil texture in Arches National Park. Data collection began in 2013 and continued through 2019, though metrics were collected at a range of intervals within that timeframe. These data were collected by U.S. Geological Survey field technicians using...

Splits of the less than 38 micron size fraction were processed to make oriented clay mounts and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These clay mineralogy XRD results are part of a data release including grain size distribution, photographic, and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36 sediment core and alluvium samples as well as select grains from...

Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in points from interpolated tetrachloroethylene soil data gridded at a 1-m interval at the Vienna Wells site, Vienna, Missouri, 2012-2015. These data were extracted at 1-meter intervals from interpolating published soil data (doi: https://doi.org/10.5066/F71835D8), which was created using the inverse-distance weighting method at a 1-meter interval, the mean PCE concentration at each location, a power of 2, and minimum and maximum neighbor search of 10 and 15. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil...

This data release comprises four datasets that represent Phosphorus concentration in the A and C horizon of soils within the conterminous United States. The source dataset is a slight modification of the data published in the report "Geochemical and mineralogical data for soils of the conterminous United States", http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/801/. Data were interpolated for use in models associated with the National Water Quality Assessment program of the USGS. Two datasets are of Phosphorus in soil A horizon and C horizon, interpolated using Inverse Distance Weight (IDW) algorithm. Two datasets are of Phosphorus in soil A horizon and C horizon, interpolated using IDW, and then aggregated to Geologic Mapping Units (GMUs).

The genetic origin of many gold deposits, including Pogo in Alaska, remains controversial with questions as to whether they formed due to magmatic-hydrothermal or metamorphic-hydrothermal fluids. Gaining a better understanding of the formation mechanisms for these deposits is critical for defining proper exploration criteria in gold-bearing regions and production within these deposits. Monazite are light rare earth (LREE)-bearing and xenotime are heavy rare earth (HREE)-bearing phosphate minerals that are found as alteration products in many gold deposits. In addition to their importance in geochronological investigations, their minor element chemistry may be used to differentiate between metamorphic, magmatic,...

Information on the biophysical features of federal lands identified as suitable for transfer to the State of Colorado was requested by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This information is intended for use in conducting an environmental assessment prior to transfer of ownership (conveyance) to the State. The Enabling Act of 1864 provided for the conveyance of federal lands to the State for the support of schools. If designated lands were unavailable for transfer at the time of statehood, the Act provided for the transfer of alternative federal lands in compensation, using a process referred to as “school-land indemnity selection.” To initiate indemnity selection, the Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners...

Mineral-resources personnel from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) carried out a helicopter-supported geological and geochemical resource assessment project in the Beaver, Bettles, Livengood, and Tanana quadrangles from June 23 through August 5, 2012. The objectives of DGGS's resource assessment are to improve the trace-element geochemical coverage of selected watersheds; to obtain modern, quantitative geochemical analyses; to understand the petrogenesis of the granites; and to better document established mineral occurrences. Stream-sediment, pan-concentrate, and rock sampling were conducted as part of the State's Rare Earth Elements and Strategic Minerals Assessment project, which is...

Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are causative agents of Valley fever, a serious fungal disease endemic to regions with hot, arid climate in the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. The environmental niche of Coccidioides spp. is not well defined, and it remains unknown whether these fungi are primarily associated with rodents or grow as saprotrophs in soil. To better understand the environmental reservoir of these pathogens, we used a systematic soil sampling approach, quantitative PCR (qPCR), culture, whole-genome sequencing, and soil chemical analysis to identify factors associated with the presence of C. immitis at a known colonization site in Washington State linked to a human...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and related chemical and physical data are presented from shallow soil and groundwater at two sites in New Hampshire. The two sites, the former Brentwood Fire Training Area and White Farm, were selected because materials known to contain PFAS were used at each site. White Farm is an active farm where biosolids have been applied for several years. At the former Brentwood Fire Training Area, PFAS-containing aqueous film-forming foams were applied as part of regular fire training exercises. At each site, soil samples were collected in a gridded pattern over the site. Soil horizons within the sampling intervals were described using the National Soil Survey Center Natural Resources...

The Spor Mountain study area is located in the Spor Mountain Range, approximately 42 miles northwest of Delta, Utah. Mining in the Spor Mountain district began in the 1940s and continues to present day. Fluorspar, uranium, and beryllium are the main ores mined(Ege, 2005). From August through September 2013, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected a total of 73 samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, channel sediments downslope of wastepiles, and background areas. The samples were sieved to obtain the less than 177 micron fraction. Geochemical analyses were completed through a third-party contract by General Society of Surveillance (SGS) with method ICM40B - Fifty-five major (except Si and Na), rare...
This data release includes solid and aqueous chemical data related to a set of sequential laboratory batch experiments conducted to test and simulate the mobility of trace elements as natural waters contact ore from breccia pipe uranium (BPU) deposits located in northern Arizona. These data were compiled to assess the response of vegetation and biological soil crusts to drought in a semi-arid ecosystem on the Colorado Plateau near Moab, Utah. Objective(s) of our study were to explore how vegetation cover, soil conditions, and growing season nitrogen (N) availability are impacted by multifaceted drying climate conditions using data from a long-term precipitation reduction experiment (30% reduction). In 2010, U.S. Geological Survey biologists installed paired experimental plots with a control plot and a plot covered by a shelter that excluded 35% of incoming precipitation. These 40 sites represent shallow vs. deep soils and sandstone vs. shale parent material. These data were collected at...

In this project, we assessed the potential for twelve coastal wetland sites on the island of Molokaʻi, Hawaiʻi, to provide socio-cultural resources and habitat for flora and fauna following restoration. In April 2022, a rapid field assessment of hydrology, soils, and vegetation was carried out at each of the wetland sites. The data provided here were collected in order to inform a prioritization protocol for ranking wetlands on Molokaʻi for restoration. Soil samples were collected at each of the sites at three different depth ranges (0-2, 24-26, and 48-50 cm). Samples from 0-2 cm and 24-26 cm were analyzed for % organic carbon and soil texture. These two measures provide a basic understanding of the status of coastal...

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program was initiated by the Atomic Energy Commission (now the Department of Energy; DOE) in 1973 with a primary goal of identifying uranium resources in the United States. The Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) program was one of nine components of NURE. Planned systematic sampling of stream sediments, soils, groundwater, and surface water over the entire United States began in 1975 under the responsibility of four DOE national laboratories: Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL), Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL), Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (ORGDP), and Savannah River Laboratory (SRL). Each DOE laboratory developed its own sample...
