These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The elevation contour data was created based on bathymetry obtained in the meander reach collected in about a one month period extending from 6/3/2010 - 6/19/2010. This subset data extends from river kilometer designator 228 upstream to 237. Similar methods used to collect and process the bathymetry are described in Fosness (2013). The contours were created from a surface raster (also referred to as digital elevation model) of the...

In 2009, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho released and implemented the Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Master Plan. This plan aimed to restore, enhance, and maintain the Kootenai River habitat and landscape to support and sustain habitat conditions for aquatic species and animal populations. In support of these restoration efforts, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, conducted high-resolution...

The surficial bed-sediment facies, herein after referred to as the sediment facies, quantitatively describes the dominant sediment substrate on the surface of the river bed. Sediment facies categories were based on the grain size distribution of Wentworth (1922) which included the following ranges or combination of ranges: gravel (2-64mm), sand (0.063-2mm) and silt/clay (less than 0.063mm). An underwater video monitoring system UVMS...

The substrate enhancement pilot project (SEPP) extent GIS layer represents an area where an artificial substrate will be placed. The artificial substrate, consisting of a mixed size class of gravel, is aimed at providing a more suitable substrate for sturgeon eggs and early-life rearing habitat. The location of the SEPP extent was created by analyzing the egg-mat network, bathymetric features, surficial sediment facies, and streamflow...
This model archive makes available the U.S. Geological Survey Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model created in support of a groundwater flow model of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Sauk County, Wisconsin. The SWB model provides initial estimates of potential recharge to the groundwater system in the study area, which are used in a calibrated 3-dimensional MODFLOW (modular finite-difference flow) model. The SWB and MODFLOW models run from 1980 to 2020. The model incorporates changing land use, and changes reflecting the decomissioning of the plant (changing urban back to non-urbanized). SWB output is broken up into 50 model timesteps for the MODFLOW model.

This data set is a polygon coverage created in ARC/INFO that represents the generalized thickness of the Minnelusa Formation, Black Hills, South Dakota. The thickness of the Minnelusa Formation was determined by substracting the elevation of the top of the Madison Limestone from the elevation of the top of the Minnelusa Formation. The elevations for the tops of the formations were determined from geologic logs for wells drilled as...
Previous work by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed models to estimate the amount of water that is withdrawn and consumed by thermoelectric power plants (Diehl and others, 2013; Diehl and Harris, 2014; Harris and Diehl, 2019 [full citations listed in srcinfo of the metadata file]). This data release presents a historical reanalysis of thermoelectric water use from 2008 to 2020 and includes monthly and annual water withdrawal and consumption estimates, thermodynamically plausible ranges of minimum and maximum withdrawal and consumption estimates, and associated information for 1,360 water-using, utility-scale thermoelectric power plants in the United States. The term “reanalysis” refers to the process of...
These data are high-resolution bathymetry (riverbed elevation) and depth-averaged velocities in ASCII format, generated from hydrographic and velocimetric surveys near highway bridge structures over the Missouri River between Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri, for dates ranging from 2010 to 2017. Hydrographic data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel. Data were collected as the vessel traversed the river along planned survey lines distributed throughout the reach. Data collection software integrated and stored the depth data from the MBES and...

The major clay step features are defined as having a vertical face that is greater than 1.5 meters. The clay step features were qualitately identified using an underwater video monitoring sysyem. The extent and magnitude of the clay steps were mapped using a muliteam bathymetric echosounder system.

These data are in support of report DS 456 (Arnold and others, 2009). 30 equal-area polygons generated using techniques described in Scott (1990). Polygons include areas overlying the High Plains Aquifer in Colorado having a depth to water less than 180 feet, a saturated thickness greater than 50 feet, and underlying irrigated agricultural lands. Described in Arnold and others (2009). Input saturated thickness and depth to water...

These data are in support of report DS 456 (Arnold and others, 2009). This grid represents the depth to groundwater in the High Plains Aquifer in Colorado in 2000. The depth-to-water grid was generated for the entire High Plains Aquifer from depth-to-water measurements collected in 2000. Shown as figure 12 in McMahon and others (2007).
This data release contains one shapefile describing cattle access to a total of 36 different sub basins within the Shenandoah Watershed located in Virginia and West Virginia. This data release identifies areas in satellite imagery where cattle were observed to have access to the stream (confirmed access), areas where cattle exist, and are not fenced off from the stream (unrestricted access), and areas where cattle do not have access to the stream (restricted access) at the time of imagery capture. Streams were defined using a combination of geospatial data and visually assessing channel morphology in aerial imagery. Cattle access points were determined by visually assessing satellite imagery for barren or disturbed...
The Triangle Chemical Company Superfund site, in Orange County, Texas, was a chemical mixing and blending facility in the 1970s. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor waste management practices resulted in soil and groundwater contamination and fish-kills in Coon Bayou (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023). The Five-Year Review of the Triangle Superfund Site indicated groundwater in the upper water-bearing zone might be migrating off-site toward the southwest (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). There are concerns regarding potential risks to human health from contaminated soil vapor in existing or future structures in the area. To evaluate the status of volatile organic compound...

These data are in support of report DS 456 (Arnold and others, 2009). This dataset includes 90 potential groundwater sampling sites randomly generated using techniques described in Scott (1990), composed of 30 locations with a first, second, and third choice of sampling location. Sites are in 30 equal area polygons that divide areas in the High Plains Aquifer in Colorado with a depth to water less than 180 feet, a saturated thickness...

An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was used to survey streamflow characteristics including total streamflow, velocity magnitude and secondary flow structure, and backscatter intensity at 29 cross-sections at the Myrtle Creek Bend on the Kootenai River on June 1, 2012. Each of the 29 cross-sections consisted of 4 transects or bank-to-bank coverage to obtain a representative velocity pattern. The mean daily streamflow was...
