In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, collected groundwater-level altitude data and water-quality samples from monitoring wells at the Petro-Chemical Systems, Inc. (Turtle Bayou) Superfund Site in Liberty County, Texas to evaluate the status of groundwater contamination at this previously remediated site. The dataset includes groundwater-level altitudes and field properties measured at 11 monitoring wells along with data from environmental and quality assurance/quality control water quality samples collected at each well. Water-quality samples were analyzed for a suite of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds.

This digital dataset contains historical geochemical and other information for 481 samples of produced water (PW) from 408 sites in the Edison, Mountain View, and Ant Hill Oil Fields in Kern County, California. Produced water is a term used in the oil industry to describe water that is produced from oil wells as a byproduct along with the oil and gas. The locations from which these historical samples have been collected include 199 wells, 67 sumps, 43 storage tanks (not associated with a specific well), and 104 unidentifiable sample sources which could not be classified because of insufficient information. The wells include 176 sites identifiable by an API (American Petroleum Institute) number and 23 sites for which...

Two non-native bigheaded carp species have invaded the Illinois River system and are a potential threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem. Discharges from industry, wastewater treatment plants, and urban and agricultural runoff, may be a factor contributing to the stalling of the upstream movement of the bigheaded carp population front near Illinois Waterway mile 278. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 4 sets of water samples under a range of seasonal and hydrologic conditions from 3 locations upstream and 4 locations downstream from river mile 278 using a Lagrangian-style sampling strategy. Water samples were analyzed for over 639 constituents of which 280 were detected at least once, including many anthropogenic...

The Geneva Industries/Fuhrmann Energy Superfund Site (hereinafter referred to as "the Site") in southeastern Houston, Texas was historically used as a site for petroleum exploration and petrochemical production and is currently (2024) inactive. Previous remedies to clean up the contaminated site included the excavation and off-site disposal of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated soils, capping the Site and surrounding it with a perimeter slurry wall to contain remaining constituents in the soil and groundwater, the recovery and treatment of trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater, and institutional controls (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2018). A conceptual site model (CSM) does not...

This dataset contains a compilation of concentrations of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater and surface water sampled at the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey. Measured VOCs include trichloroethene (TCE), cis- 1,2-dichloroethene (cisDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Semi-volatile organic compound 1,4-dioxane is also included. Measured PFAS include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic...

The Triangle Chemical Company Superfund site, in Orange County, Texas, was a chemical mixing and blending facility in the 1970s. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor waste management practices resulted in soil and groundwater contamination and fish-kills in Coon Bayou (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023). The Five-Year Review of the Triangle Superfund Site indicated groundwater in the upper water-bearing zone might be migrating off-site toward the southwest (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). There are concerns regarding potential risks to human health from contaminated soil vapor in existing or future structures in the area. To evaluate the status of volatile organic compound...

These data comprise the target and non-target VOC measurements collected from 1999 to 2016 from the shallow and deep unsaturated zone at the Amargosa Desert Research Site adjacent to a low-level radioactive waste and hazardous chemical waste facility near Beatty, Nevada. All data are compiled in electronic text files that are included with this release.

The Falcon Refinery Superfund Site (hereinafter referred to as “the Site”) is located in San Patricio County near Ingleside, Texas. The Site occupies approximately 104 noncontiguous acres that are divided into the North Site, the South Site, and a barge dock facility. Surface water drainage from the Site enters wetlands along the southeastern section of the property associated with this abandoned refinery. The wetlands connect to the Intracoastal Waterway and Redfish Bay, which connects Corpus Christi Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the abandoned refinery, the site currently (June 2024) includes seven large (greater than 50 feet in diameter) aboveground storage tanks that are in the process of being disassembled...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and co-occurring inorganic and organic contaminants are widely distributed in the environment and understanding their surface water sources is critical for water resource management. In November 2021, 13 sites were sampled along a stream reach in the Neshaminy Creek basin in southeastern Pennsylvania utilizing a time of travel sampling approach. The reach had known potential PFAS source inputs and documented PFAS detections in water samples. This data release describes the sampling approach, sample processing, laboratory analytical methods, and contains the results. Site (Table_1_NC_2021_Site_Info) and constituent information (Table_2_Constituents) are provided in tab...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 71 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Stanislaus and Merced counties of California during 2020-2021. The wells were sampled for the Modesto-Turlock-Merced Domestic-Supply Aquifer Study Unit of the State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. The study unit was defined by the extent of the Modesto, Turlock, and Merced subbasins of the San Joaquin Valley groundwater basin. The study unit was divided into 62 grid cells and one or more domestic...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This raster data set delineates the predicted probability of elevated nitrate concentrations in groundwater in the Eagle River watershed valley-fill aquifer, Eagle County, North-Central Colorado, 2006-2007. This data set was developed by a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey, Eagle County, the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, the Town of Eagle, the Town of Gypsum, and the Upper Eagle Regional Water Authority....

This data release presents chemical results from investigations of surface-water quality in the Potomac River watershed (encompassing Washington, D.C. and parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland) conducted during low-flow conditions in July through September of 2022 and modeling results that support interpretative products. Water-quality sampling: A sampling campaign was conducted at 32 stream sites throughout the watershed (Table 1). A suite of field parameters and inorganic and organic chemical characteristics at each site were characterized using seven separate analytical methods at five laboratories (Table 2). The water-quality results are presented in Table 3. Analytical methods and laboratories...
