The California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program (GAMA) is a statewide assessment of groundwater quality designed to help better understand and identify risks to groundwater resources. GAMA is implemented by the California State Water Resources Control Board. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is the technical lead for the Priority Basin Project (PBP), one of the components of the GAMA Program. Starting in 2012, GAMA began an assessment of water resources in domestic-supply (shallow) aquifers in California. The Triangle Chemical Company Superfund site, in Orange County, Texas, was a chemical mixing and blending facility in the 1970s. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor waste management practices resulted in soil and groundwater contamination and fish-kills in Coon Bayou (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023). This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides salinity and density data collected at Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah monitoring locations during 2021–2022. Temperature, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen were collected using an In-Situ AquaTROLL 600. Sample density was measured using an Anton Paar DMA 35Ex at 5° increments between 5° and 40° C. Practical salinity was measured at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science using a Guideline Salinometer. These data were used to validate the equation of state for Great Salt Lake at salinities higher than the established range, 23–182 g/L (Naftz, et al, 2011). Water, bed sediment, and invertebrate tissue were sampled in streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana, as part of a monitoring program in the Clark Fork Basin. The sampling program was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to characterize aquatic resources in the Clark Fork Basin and monitor trace elements associated with historical mining and smelting activities. The extensive development of oil and natural-gas resources in south Texas during the past 10 years has led to questions regarding possible environmental effects of processes associated with oil and natural-gas production, in particular the process of hydraulic fracturing, on water and other natural resources. These produced datasets include water-quality and quality assurance results collected by the USGS and other entities from 1952 to 2016 near the City of Poplar as well as throughout the East Poplar oil field, leachate results collected from drilling core within the Cretaceous Bearpaw Formation and Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) fertilizer results collected by the USGS in 2012. The handling and disposal of the brine has resulted in contamination of not only the shallow aquifers in the East Poplar oil field, but also the Poplar River (Thamke and Craigg, 1997; Thamke and Smith, 2014).
