Mid-sized mammals (i.e., mesomammals) fulfill important ecological roles, serving as essential scavengers, predators, pollinators, and seed dispersers in the ecosystems they inhabit. Consequently, declines in mesomammal populations have the potential to disrupt ecological processes and degrade ecosystems. However, ecosystems characterized by high functional redundancy, where multiple species can fulfill similar ecological roles, may be less impacted by the loss of mesomammals and other vertebrates. The Greater Everglades Ecosystem in southern Florida is a historically biodiverse region that has recently been impacted by multiple anthropogenic threats, most notably the introduction of the Burmese python (Python bivittatus)....

This metadata record describes monthly estimates of natural baseflow for 15,866 stream reaches, defined by the National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2.0 (NHDPlusV2), in the Delaware River Basin for the period 1950-2015. A statistical machine learning technique - random forest modeling (Liaw and Wiener, 2018; R Core Team, 2020) - was applied to estimate natural flows using about 150 potential predictor variables (Miller and others, 2018). Calibration data used for the random forest model are available from (Foks and others, 2020). Each model was run twice, first using all potential predictor variables, which represents a "full" model run, and a second time using the top 20 predictors from the original run, which...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release consists of two hydrographic datasets with spatial modeling units, two sets of spatial data consistent with the National Hydrologic Model (NHM) Geospatial Fabric for National Hydrologic Modeling (abbreviated within this document as GFv1, Viger and Bock, 2014), and a database of 118 parameters used to run the NHM . These datasets are found as subpages to this landing page as 1) the GIS (geographic information system) features of the United States-Canada Transboundary Geospatial Fabric (TGF, added 08/04/2020), 2) the GIS features of the Geospatial Fabric v1.1 (GFv1.1 or v1_1, added 08/04/2020) which is an update to the GF and includes the TGF, 3) Topographic derivative...

The data in this data release are from an effort focused on understanding social vulnerability to water insecurity, resiliency demonstrated by institutions, and conflict or crisis around water resource management. This data release focuses on definitions and metrics of resilience in water management institutions. Water resource managers, at various scales, are tasked with making complex and time-sensitive decisions in the face of uncertainty, competing objectives, and difficult tradeoffs. To do this, they must incorporate data, tacit knowledge, cultural and organizational norms, and individual or institutional values in a way that maintains consistent and predictable operations under normal circumstances, while...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Extent Hydrogeologic Framework for National Water Census (NEHF) project is a multi-year effort (2022 through 2025) that will compile existing assets (approaches, data, software, etc.), develop a strategic plan, and implement an operational framework that is dynamic and multi-scale. Within the USGS, numerical groundwater-flow and solute- and heat-transport models have been created for a variety of purposes that include water-resource assessments, contaminant-transport evaluations, and water-management planning. These models are often supported by hydrogeologic-framework studies that describe the surface and subsurface distribution of geologic materials and their hydrologic...

Anaerobic microcosm experiments were conducted in April-May 2018 with PFAS-contaminated soil from a U.S. Army installation (Fort Drum, New York) and simulated groundwater. All microcosms, except for a live sediment control, were amended with perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FtS). Replicate treatments were prepared with and without bioaugmentation with the WBC-2 dehalogenating culture and with and without addition of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and trichloroethylene). Two additional treatments were prepared containing granular activated carbon. All microcosms were prepared in duplicate and sacrificed for sampling....

Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis data compiled using sample preparation procedures outlined by ASTM D2013/D2013M-18 and ASTM D6357, and using two independent sets of element standards for instrument calibration. Additional analysis methodologies are described in detail in the resulting publication Rare earth elements and yttrium in Pennsylvanian coals and shales in the eastern part of the Illinois Basin (Mastalerz et al., 2020).

This file provides final processed GPS location data for Whimbrel tagged from 2019-2022 collected via the ARGOS website. Raw data files were processed with Lotek Argos-GPS Data Processor V3.18 (2018-2021) or V4.2 (2022).The data providers have invested considerable effort in QA/QC, but it is possible that undetected errors remain. It is strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the contents of the metadata file associated with these data to evaluate data set limitations, restrictions, or intended use. The originators of this dataset shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein.Potential users of these data should first contact the data authors...

This layer represents fundamentally suitable and unsuitable habitat for freshwater mussels in the Meramec Basin as modeled by these authors on May 17, 2017 based on spatial data ranging from 1990 to 2014. Identification of habitat characteristics associated with the presence of freshwater mussels is challenging but crucial for the conservation of this declining fauna. Most mussel species are found in multi-species assemblages suggesting that physical factors influence presence similarly across species. In lotic environments, geomorphic and hydraulic characteristics appear to be important factors for predicting mussel presence. We used maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to evaluate hydrogeomorphic variables associated...

Note: this data release is currently being revised and is temporarily unavailable The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Resources Mission Area (WMA) is working to address a need to understand where the Nation is experiencing water shortages or surpluses relative to the demand for water need by delivering routine assessments of water supply and demand and an understanding of the natural and human factors affecting the balance between supply and demand. A key part of these national assessments is identifying long-term trends in water availability, including groundwater and surface water quantity, quality, and use. This data release contains Mann-Kendall monotonic trend analyses for 18 observed annual and monthly...

These catalogs serve to identify known locations of mineral extraction and exploration activities discussed for the purpose of eventually discovering these data through the Mines web map application. These tables of information will reduce data entry time through use of queries to generate records. They also help identify properties without a clear location for efficient discussion with the original authors.

Risk assessments describe the risk of a species’ invasion in a location, and many risk assessments have been produced by different institutions for various reasons. However, information is sporadically located online, increasing the difficulty of developing comprehensive lists of species with risk assessments or comparing assessment results across species in locations of interest. Therefore, we aggregated species risk assessments by searching information systems and conducting a literature review. The methods for data aggregation are explained in the larger work citation (Dean et al. 2024). The present dataset documents risk assessments available at different spatial scales (e.g., territory, state, region, nation)...

Boreal wetland birds are among the continent’s most rapidly declining avifauna. However, many of these declining species still breed commonly on military lands in Alaska. We propose to survey these species, as well as, additional boreal wetland obligates at breeding sites on Eielson Air Force Base (AFB) and then track migratory movements throughout the annual cycle. Our surveys aim to identify important wetland features for conservation and levels of fragmentation that may reduce bird breeding numbers. Our tracking of birds during migration will identify habitats for conservation at key stopover and wintering areas, and therefore allow conservation on military lands in Alaska to be directly linked to conservation...
