This data release presents data that were collected as part of a larger effort to assess factors that regulate metabolism in global lakes, via an international collaboration with the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON). From May to August 2019, dissolved oxygen and light penetration were measured throughout the water-depth profile of two small inland wetlands at Cottonwood Lake Study Area in North Dakota, USA. Water temperature and wind data also were collected, and recent water column chemistry (carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen) data from the summer of 2016 were compiled. Dataset contains locations of subsurface drainage tile permits in North Dakota obtained from the North Dakota State Water Commission as of February 2016. This dataset was updated on 4 August 2016 with additional subsurface drainage permits and supersedes the previous version. Date range of permits (Start & End Dates) in this version has changed from previous version because of the following criteria. Permit applications that were marked as "approved" by the State Water Commission were retained in this dataset, all other status types (e.g., pending, denied) were removed. The rapid expansion of pattern tile drainage (PTD) to enhance agricultural production in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) has the potential to negatively impact ecosystem services provided by wetlands. To better understand and assess these impacts we will develop a spatial database to provide a regional characterization of areas at risk to PTD. Spatial information in conjunction with existing data and models will be used to make preliminary projections on the effects of PTD on cosystem services such as duck production, water storage and water quality.
