The Florida Geological Survey maintains a collection of over 8,000 outcrop samples, mineral specimens, and manufacturing products from Florida. These samples are part of a large collection referred to as the “M-Series,” which also includes 400 specimens from out-of-state. The M-Series is particularly valuable given Florida’s high rate of growth and development. Surface exposures of critical lithologies have become inaccessible with the continued proliferation of roadways, shopping centers, parking lots and high-rise housing. The collection is housed in cardboard boxes and stored on rolling shelving units. Currently, work is being done to correlate these specimens to unique geologic exposure locations throughout the state.
