Summary

The "Historical Aerial Photographs of Maryland, 1937-1990, County Collection" consists of black and white aerial photos (9"x9", 1:20,000-scale) from several time periods: 1937-1938, 1949, 1951-1953, 1957, 1961-1964, 1968, 1970-1972, 1979-1981, and 1983-1990. These photographs were usually flown or otherwise acquired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), or Air Photographics. USDA and USGS photographs were donated to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), mainly by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). MGS purchased the copyrighted Air Photographics photos. Although the photographs were flown throughout Maryland, statewide coverage is likely incomplete for any given time period. [...]

Contact Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) at 410-554-5500 or email dale.shelton@maryland.gov to make an appointment for in-house use of the paper photographs currently residing at MGS.

As of August 2016, all photographs in this component have been digitized (1200 dpi; all in TIF format; most also in JPG format).  Contact MGS (410-554-5500) or email katherine.knippler@maryland.gov to request a digital image.  Typically, digital images can be shared with patrons via a file transfer on Google Drive.  Additionally, select digital images from this collection for Baltimore County and City are available online via the Johns Hopkins University Library (JScholarship website).   URLs for these Baltimore area digital images are listed in the "Related External Resources" section above.

To determine which photographs are in an area of interest, please view the "Historical Air Photo Index Maps of Maryland, 1936-1990" collection here:  https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/4f70c4dee4b08a0b754221e1.  The index maps are photo-mosaics, created by overlapping the individual county aerial photographs to approximate the landscape photographed.  Commonly, for any one particular time period, more than one index map is needed to cover an entire county.  The index maps are available online via the Maryland State Archives (MSA) Guide to Government Records website and the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) JScholarship website.  Links to the online images are provided under the "Related External Resources" section of this page, as well as on the "Historical Air Photo Index Maps of Maryland, 1936-1990" NDC page (listed above). Additional information about MGS's aerial photograph collection (including links to online images) are also provided on MGS's "Aerial Photograph Collection" webpage located here: http://www.mgs.md.gov/publications/mgs_data_preservation/aerial_photos.html.

Note that in August 2016, ~6,100 aerial photographs from this collection (comprising the 1930s, 1940s, and a portion of the 1950s photographs) were transferred from MGS to a Maryland State Archives (MSA) facility in Windsor Mill, MD for permanent storage.  In July 2017, an additional ~5,200 aerial photographs from this collection (comprising the rest of the 1950s photographs and a portion of the 1960s photographs) were transferred to the MSA Windsor Mill facility.  The MSA Series ID for these transferred photographs is T5053.  Information about the series may be found here:  http://guide.msa.maryland.gov/pages/series.aspx?ID=T5053.  To view any of the transferred paper photographs, please contact the MSA Help Desk at 410-260-6487 or email the Help Desk at msa.helpdesk@maryland.gov and reference the MSA Series ID T5053.  The Help Desk will advise if any additional forms are needed to process the request.  Note that photographs may only be viewed in the Annapolis MSA office (350 Rowe Blvd, Annapolis, MD 21401), so it may take a few days for the photographs to be delivered to Annapolis from the Windsor Mill facility.
