Description of Figure 51B, page 30, in U.S. Geological Survey Professional paper 1177-B (1986): ..."artifical beach nourishment has long been considered the most desireable method of protection because (1) placement of sand on a beach does not alter the suitability of the system for recreation, (2) nourishment cannot adversely affect areas beyond the problem area, and (3) if the design fails, the effects of the "structure" are soon dissipated."
