Sand volcano or "sand boil" measuring 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length erupted in the median of Interstate 80 west of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll plaza. Ground shaking transformed a loose water-saturated deposit of subsurface sand into a sand-water slurry (liquefaction). The vented sand contains marine shell fragments.
