The Fort Collins Science Center Web Applications Team, the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis unit of the Core Science Systems Mission Area, and a North Central Climate Science Center/NCAR/NOAA partnership group collaborated on a set of automated tools to allow remapping of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata standards to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) metadata standards. Summary
The Fort Collins Science Center Web Applications Team, the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis unit of the Core Science Systems Mission Area, and a North Central Climate Science Center/NCAR/NOAA partnership group collaborated on a set of automated tools to allow remapping of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata standards to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) metadata standards. This project addressed the challenge of expediting the conversion of millions of metadata records in multiple USGS catalogs that run the risk of being left in a deprecated transfer format. The project set the stage for metadata conversions by:
1. Providing roadmaps and automated processes to remap FGDC to fields defined under ISO metadata standards, including:
transforms from FGDC-STD-001-1998 XML (CSGDM) into ISO 19115-2:2009(E) XML;
transforms from FGDC-STD-001.1-1999 XML (BIO) into ISO 19115-2:2009(E) XML;
transforms from FGDC-STD-12-2002 XML (RSE) into ISO 19115-2:2009(E) XML;
transforms from FGDC Section 5 metadata, Entity and Attributes, into the ISO 19110 Feature Catalogue;
and, transforms of FGDC geospatial metadata to ISO 19139, the geospatial implementation schema for ISO19115;
2. Delivering a reference implementation of these tools in the ScienceBase metadata processor; and,
3. Exploring ways to deliver these transforms via web services to groups with sizeable FGDC metadata stores.
Design of these capabilities around ScienceBase 2.0 was scheduled for the April-June, 2012 timeframe
Other benefits are continuing to pay dividents on the initial investment and timeframe.
Strategic Partnerships. The distributed development team approach created a synergistic environment of collaboration and cooperative development by highly skilled technical staff across the Bureau.
Leveraged Funding. The funding model leveraged Bureau Shared Cost and Mission Area funding with in-kind resources from Science Centers and Programs to extend existing projects to benefit the broader community of USGS scientists.
Leadership Development. Leaders within the community emerged to energize groups associated with data management documentation and Web services development.
