Summary

Building upon the successful efforts of SARP, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), and other federal, state, and local partners to establish and implement NFCAs in the Llano River watershed, TX and Chipola River watershed, FL (Birdsong et al., 2015, Garrett et al. 2015), we will coordinate a series of watershed-based conservation planning workshops focused on eight priority river systems in the Great Plains (i.e., the White River, Platte River, Arkansas-Kansas Rivers, Canadian River, Deep Fork River, Red River, Brazos River, and Colorado River). We will utilize conservation assessments and conservation planning tools recently developed by Labay and Henderickson (2014; http://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/handle/2152/27744) to [...]

Purpose

The primary objective of this project is to coordinate and conduct watershed-based conservation planning workshops for eight priority river systems of the Great Plains, identifying and prioritizing research and conservation needs for preservation of freshwater biodiversity and facilitating initial steps toward establishment of a network of Native Fish Conservation Areas in the Great Plains. The vision for each of the proposed Native Fish Conservation Areas is for the river system and associated watershed to be conserved and restored to the level that native fishes thrive as stable components of diverse ecological communities, simultaneously providing clean water, outstanding outdoor recreation, and a stable economic base for present and future citizens of the watershed. Conservation of Great Plains rivers has been identified as a priority issue by the Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC). This proposed project would establish a strong foundation for collaboration among the GPLCC and the two Fish Habitat Partnerships active in the region (i.e., Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP; geographic coverage includes OK and TX) and the Great Plains Fish Habitat Partnership (GPFHP; geographic coverage includes the remainder of the GPLCC geography), opening a dialogue at the science-policy interface and ensuring that science investments by the GPLCC are transitioned to inform on-the-ground conservation actions taken by the Fish Habitat Partnerships to protect, reconnect, and restore Great Plains rivers and conserve the region’s freshwater biodiversity.
