Due to declining water levels and increasing salinity in the Salton Sea which may increase the hazards to wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation are re-evaluating selenium concentrations in the region. As part of this work, selenium concentrations in water and sediment samples and selected other inorganic constituents were compiled from published reports, public databases, and unpublished archives into a tabulated spreadsheet. This spreadsheet represents a rapid synthesis of available data on selenium concentrations in water and sediment in the region surrounding the Salton Sea, however it does not include all data ever published in the region. Additionally, the data compilation was...

Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB) is located in Kern County, CA, approximately 35 kilometers (km) northeast of Lancaster and 9 km south of California City. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is situated on EAFB, approximately 7 km southwest of Boron, CA. Release of contaminants from the AFRL facilities have contaminated local groundwater, which is mostly restricted to fractured granitic bedrock, but studies indicate that the groundwater and contaminant plumes have moved into alluvial deposits to the north and northwest (AECOM, 2014). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) entered into a cooperative agreement in 2017 to develop a hydrogeologic framework model to help determine...

Field observations of water and suspended-sediment fluxes at the Golden Gate were made over one ebb tide and one flood tide on three occasions: 1) 21-22 March 2016, following a large storm event that triggered the first flow into Yolo Bypass flood control structure since 2011; 2) 23 June of 2016, during a period of low freshwater inflow and 3) 27-28 February 2017, following several large storms of the wettest winter in northern California in recorded history. On each occasion, flux of water and suspended sediment were estimated using data from a boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler. This instrument provided high-resolution velocity and acoustic backscatter (ABS) data at a cross-section (“transect”) near...

Extensive groundwater withdrawal from the unconsolidated deposits in the San Joaquin Valley caused widespread aquifer-system compaction and resultant land subsidence from 1926 to 1970—locally exceeding 8.5 meters. The importation of surface water beginning in the early 1950s through the Delta-Mendota Canal and in the early 1970s through the California Aqueduct resulted in decreased groundwater pumping, recovery of water levels, and a reduced rate of compaction in some areas of the San Joaquin Valley. However, drought conditions during 1976–77, 1987–92, and drought conditions and operational reductions in surface-water deliveries during 2007–10 decreased surface-water availability, causing pumping to increase, water...
