This layer represents a crosswalk of the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover to the Class level of the U. S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC). At the Class level vegetation types are distinguished based on dominant growth form (for example - Forest & Woodland). In addition to the vegetation types in the map legend there are land use classes (for example - open water, agriculture) that are not a part of the USNVC. Visit these sites for more information about the National Classification, the Federal Geographic Data Committee- Vegetation Subcommittee and the USNVC Standard. These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m...

This layer represents a crosswalk of the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover to the Division level of the U. S. National Vegetation Classification. At the Division level vegetation types are distinguished by combinations of growth forms, broad diagnostic plant species, and continental differences in mesoclimate, geology, substrates, hydrology, and disturbance regimes (for example - Vancouverian Cool Temperate Forest & Woodland). In addition to the vegetation types in the map legend there are land use classes (for example - open water, agriculture) that are not a part of the USNVC. Visit these sites for more information about the National Classification, the Federal Geographic Data Committee-...

Uses direct output files of Aquatic Gap Analysis Program (AGAP) fish distribution models and National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) 2010 Habitat Condition Indicies (HCI) to make summarized conclusions of stream condition and fish biological potential for Level 3 Ecoregions across the Conterminous United States (CONUS). Initial AGAP and NFHP products were represented at the local catchment scale of the National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 1 (NHDPlusV1). To summarize AGAP and NFHP data into Level 3 EcoRegions a length-weighted average was used (i.e. the cumulative HCI value for each river reach within an ecoregion was weighted by the reach length with the formula (H1*L1+H2*L2...+HX*LX)/(H1+H2...+HX) where...

This database contains type descriptions for natural vegetation at all levels of the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. These descriptions were primarily written by NatureServe ecologists in collaboration with Federal Geographic Data Committee Vegetation Subcommittee and a wide variety of state, federal and private partners as a part of the implementation of the National Vegetation Classification. Formation descriptions were written by the Hierarchy Revisions Working Group. The descriptions are based on consultation with natural resource professionals, published literature, and other vegetation classification systems. The Ecological Society of America’s Panel on Vegetation Classification is responsible for...

This layer represents a crosswalk of the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover to the Group level of the U. S. National Vegetation Classification. At the Group level vegetation types are distinguished by diagnostic species and growth forms and regional mesoclimate, geology, substrates, hydrology, and disturbance regimes (for example - Cascadian Oregon White Oak - Conifer Forest & Woodland) In addition to the vegetation types in the map legend there are land use classes (for example - open water, agriculture) that are not a part of the USNVC. This layer represents a crosswalk of the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover to the Macrogroup level of the U. S. National Vegetation Classification. At the Macrogroup level vegetation types are distinguished by diagnostic plant species and growth forms, and sub-continental to regional differences in mesoclimate, geology, substrates, hydrology and disturbance regimes (for example - Southern Vancouverian Dry Foothill Forest & Woodland). In addition to the vegetation types in the map legend there are land use classes (for example - open water, agriculture) that are not a part of the USNVC. Researchers from North Carolina State University and the USGS integrated models of urbanization and vegetation dynamics with the regional climate models to predict vegetation dynamics and assess how landscape change could impact priority species, including North American land birds. This integrated ensemble of models can be used to predict locations where responses to climate change are most likely to occur, expressing results in terms of species persistence to help resource managers understand the long-term sustainability of bird populations.

The Southeastern United States spans a broad range of physiographic settings and maintains exceptionally high levels of faunal diversity. Unfortunately, many of these ecosystems are increasingly under threat due to rapid human development, and management agencies are increasingly aware of the potential effects that climate change will have on these ecosystems. Natural resource managers and conservation planners can be effective at preserving ecosystems in the face of these stressors only if they can adapt current conservation efforts to increase the overall resilience of the system. Climate change, in particular, challenges many of the basic assumptions used by conservation planners and managers. Previous conservation...

This layer represents a crosswalk of the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover to the Formation level of the U. S. National Vegetation Classification. At the Formation level vegetation types are distinguished by dominant and diagnostic growth forms and global macroclimate factors as modified by altitude, seasonality of precipitation, substrates and hydrologic conditions (for example - Cool Temperate Forest & Woodland). In addition to the vegetation types in the map legend there are land use classes (for example - open water, agriculture) that are not a part of the USNVC. Visit these sites for more information about the National Classification, the Federal Geographic Data Committee- Vegetation...

The Large River Monitoring Forum focuses on fish, fish habitat research, and monitoring approaches, including: scientific objectives for comparisons within and among aquatic ecosystems; scientifically sound monitoring design; methods for data collection and analysis; and best practices for data and information management. This forum enhances agency capacity by sustaining collaboration among USGS expert staff as well as provide opportunity for collaborating agencies and tribes to contribute to the development of recommendations for the implementation of a national network.

This layer represents the finest level of thematic detail for the GAP/LANDFIRE National Terrestrial Ecosystems 2011 land cover. This data layer is the 2011 update of the National Gap Analysis Program Land Cover Data - Version 2.2 for the conterminous U.S. The map legend includes types described by NatureServe's Ecological Systems Classification (Comer et al. 2003) as well as land use classes described in the National Land Cover Dataset 2011 (Homer et al. 2015). These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. Comer, P., D. Faber-Langendoen, R. Evans, S. Gawler, C. Josse, G. Kittel, S. Menard, M. Pyne, M. Reid, K. Schulz, K. Snow,...
