We present one tabular data file to evaluate piping plover (Charadrius melodus) seasonal (breeding and nonbreeding) adult survival. These data were part of a study to examine adult (n = 3474) survival during 2012-2019 at breeding regions within the Northern Great Plains and nonbreeding regions in the Gulf and southern Atlantic Coasts of North America. This file includes USGS-funded data and not the full data used in the Larger Work. The seasonal adult survival data includes a multistate model encounter history.

We present a tabular data set representing values to estimate apparent hatch-year survival to adulthood and natal dispersal probabilities between two breeding groups of the Northern Great Plains piping plover (Charadrius melodus) used in a multievent capture-mark-resight model from 2014-2019. Focusing on the Northern Missouri River and U.S. Alkali Wetlands breeding groups. In addition, several covariates were included representing habitat and social variables.

These data were developed to support an effort to understand how whooping cranes select stopover habitat in the presence of human infrastructure. Location and associated data came from whooping cranes (Grus americana) from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2010–2016. We marked a sample of 57 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system (GPS) network and transmitted those data through the Argos satellite system. Cranes were captured either at their natal areas in and adjacent to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada or at their southern terminus along the Texas Gulf Coast, USA. This data release contains eight datasets that represent the entirety of the data collected for a study that examined breeding-bird densities in native mixed-grass prairie from 2003 to 2012 at and adjacent to wind facilities in North Dakota and South Dakota, USA. Data were collected to determine breeding-bird density per 100 hectares (ha) by distance bands from turbines and by excluding habitat that may not be considered suitable as breeding habitat for particular bird species. A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center visited sites nine times throughout the breeding season (late May to mid-July) to record counts of grassland birds. Surveyors applied North American Breeding Bird Survey methodology to obtain counts at On-, Near-, and Off-road Stops, but unlike the North American Breeding Bird Survey, which features a single survey at each site, three replicate surveys were conducted on back-to-back-to-back days during each survey period to facilitate estimation of detection and occupancy probabilities. This data release presents data that were collected as part of a larger effort to assess factors that regulate thermal stratification and mixing in small ponds. This work was part of an international collaborative effort with the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON). From May to October 2019, temperature and light were measured throughout the water-depth profile of two artificial ponds located near Jamestown, North Dakota. Meteorological and bathymetric data also were collected. The ponds, managed by the U.S. Geological Survey Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, are representative of the small inland wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region of North America. We present two tabular data sets representing values to examine sources of variation in natal and breeding dispersal distances for piping plovers breeding in the Northern Great Plains from 2014-2019 focusing on four study areas: U.S. Alkali Wetlands, Lake Sakakawea, Garrison Reach of the Missouri River, and Lake Oahe. We included habitat variables, and conspecific densities in both datasets and include nest fates and mate fidelity in the breeding dispersal dataset.

This dataset contains the capture location and summer location of deer radio-collared in the Garden Lake deeryard, near Ely MN during the summers of 1998, 1999, 2001, 2014, and 2017. The data set also contains the distance and direction deer migrated from capture locations to summer locations.

This set of spatial data sets provides information pertaining to the known land use and disturbance history for lands within the March 2018 administrative boundaries of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument and Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska; Badlands National Park and Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota; Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana; and Devils Tower National Monument and Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Wyoming.

We present a tabular data set representing values used to evaluate hypotheses of breeding habitat selection for immigrants and returning Northern Great Plains piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) from 2014 – 2019. The associated manuscript uses network analysis approach to evaluate five hypotheses of habitat selection. In this approach breeding locations were nodes and successive year breeding attempts form the edges (immigration) and self-loops (fidelity). Included in the dataset are covariates of habitat amount, conspecific density, and habitat quality, as well as other fields used in the analysis. In addition, we include descriptive breeding location-specific metrics from the network graphs.

Cattail (Typha) is a common plant found throughout the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the United State. Typha x glauca, a hybrid between Typha latifolia and Typha angustifolia, is considered an invasive species that has spread across the PPR, negatively impacting the regions important wetlands and other aquatic habitats. The distribution of the various cattail taxa, however, is not well understood in the PPR. This data release reports genetic and morphologic data from a study intended to assess the distribution of the invasive hybrid cattail. Genetic-based taxonomic data (cattail taxa) are provided from nearly 500 cattail tissue samples collected from over 80 PPR wetlands.

This dataset presents four tabular data files that evaluate the effect of predator exclosures around piping plover (Charadrius melodus) nests on plover nest, chick, within-season, and annual adult survival. During 2014-2016, we designed an experiment to examine nest (n = 418), chick (n = 453), and adult (n = 367) survival at alkaline wetlands of the Northern Great Plains. Alkaline wetlands were divided between treatment wetlands and control wetlands (no exclosures placed anywhere on wetland). Field crews aimed to place predator exclosures around half of all plover nests found resulting in three treatment types: uncaged nest on control wetland, uncaged nest on treatment wetland, and caged nest on treatment wetland....

This data release contains three data sets. The data were collected in 1997 at the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND, USA. The main data set comprises the list of plant species observed and includes the transect, plot number, plot size, and vegetation type where each species was found. A second data set has the locations of the transects, along with their IDs which can be linked to the species list. The final data set is a list of nomenclature updates and species that had duplicates in ITIS, along with the currently accepted scientific names of these species.

This data release presents input data for plot- and landscape-scale models of Prairie Pothole Region wetland methane emissions as a function of explanatory variables and remotely sensed predictors. Field data for the plot- and landscape-scale models span the years 2003-2016 and 2005-2016, respectively. The data release also includes R programming code to run the generalized additive model (GAM; plot scale) and random forest (RF; landscape scale) model of methane flux rates. The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is an abundant and wide-spread duck species that exhibits considerable variation in migratory behavior due to a relatively large body size and behavioral plasticity in habitat use. Understanding migration and other movements of mallards has societal interest in a wildlife management context because mallards are a preferred species of waterfowl by hunters and have the largest annual harvest of all duck species in the United States. We monitored juvenile mallards during autumn-winters 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 to determine factors associated with timing, distance, and direction of regional and migration movements during autumn-winter across the midcontinent of North America.
