Location and associated data came from whooping cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2009–2018. We marked a sample of 68 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system (GPS) network and transmitted those data through the Argos satellite system. Cranes were captured either at their natal areas in and adjacent to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada or at their winter terminus along the Texas Gulf Coast. Transmitters provided different quantities of data because of the variable transmitter functionality and survival of marked birds. Multiple partners administered this research project and collected these data, including the Canadian Wildlife Service,...
We studied the impacts of using cattle grazing or prescribed fire to manage remnant prairies on plant communities and soil characteristics in the prairie parkland province of western Minnesota. These datasets consist of nested frequency plot plant survey data, study site and soil characteristics, and management information taken from 73 sites owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy and private land owners. Because management effects can take many years to become evident, we evaluated response variables on remnant prairies that had been subject to either fire or grazing for at least 10 years prior to our surveys, between 2005-2015.

The data set consists of data to evaluate bias in roadside surveys of secretive marsh birds in 2008 and 2009 in wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota during three survey periods (survey number). The data set includes detection values (species heard, species seen, species seen and heard) of seven focal marsh bird species (four-letter alpha codes and scientific names [genus and species]) by paired basin regime (temporary, seasonal, semipermanent, lake) locations using play-callback recordings and passive listening, and the detection distance to each species. In conjunction with surveys of wetland birds, the following location, weather and wetland features were recorded:...
Data on diurnal variation in wetland methane flux were collected to 1) improve understanding of short-term, mechanistic drivers of methane flux, and 2) inform sampling protocols to achieve research objectives. An automated gas flux sampling system was used to measure methane flux every 2.5–4 hours for over 230 diel cycles over the course of three growing seasons (2013–2015). Data were collected from a seasonal, depressional wetland located in the Prairie Pothole Region of central North America. These data directly support the associated publication “Diurnal patterns of methane flux from a depressional, seasonal wetland: mechanisms and methodology” which is referenced within the Metadata.

Plant and soil data were collected in experimental plots in two sites ("Terrace" and "Hilltop") at Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, and one site ("BSV") at Badlands National Park, South Dakota. At each site, 70, 2.5 x 2.5 m plots were assigned randomly to nitrogen-alone or nitrogen+water addition treatments (or no treatment for the control). Treatments were applied and data collected 2010-2013. The dataset includes six tables: (1) experimental treatments by plot and year; (2) plant and soil metrics analyzed in the larger work; (3) plant tissue and soil total carbon and nitrogen raw data; (4) plant biomass raw data; (5) canopy and ground cover raw data; and (6) canopy and ground cover codes.

The data set consists of data collected in 1995, 1996, and 1997 in wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota and South Dakota. The data were summarized and used in the analysis for a U.S. Geological Survey Open File Report entitled: The influence of local- and landscape-level factors on wetland breeding birds in the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota. The data consist of two data sets. A species data set includes the common names, scientific names (species and genus), and four-letter alpha codes for 133 bird species observed during the three-year study. The bird abundance data set includes the abundance of wetland birds by wetland class (temporary, seasonal, semipermanent, permanent, alkali),...
A study was conducted to assess the vertical accretion of sediment in the Mud Lake impoundment of Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located in Brown County, South Dakota. Sediment cores were collected from the Mud Lake impoundment during 2000 for determination of vertical accretion rates, which were estimated using cesium-137 and lead-210 isotopic dating techniques. These data directly support the associated publication “Sedimentation Rates in the Marshes of Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, South Dakota” which is referenced within the Metadata.
This dataset describes features of 2941 duck nests that were found in the Prairie Pothole Region of North and South Dakota during 2002-2003. Nest features include estimated initiation date, incubation stage and status as active. The dataset accompanies a scientific journal article describing an evaluation of the density and success of duck nests in conservation fields in 36 study areas that were seeded with native or tame grasses. Field features in this dataset include seeding treatment, planted area, and area of grassland patch.

The avian community of peatland habitats were surveyed along belt transects established in multiple units of Seney National Wildlife Refuge, representing peatland habitats dominated by a range of sedge to shrub cover at varying levels. Surveys were conducted during the 3-week period of mid-May to early June and again during mid-June-early July in three years (2007–2009). Three datasets are included here 1) data of presence/absence of breeding bird species detected in each 100-m segment of belt transects, 2) four-letter codes for bird species, and 3) environmental and land-cover attributes summarized for 200-m buffers around the bird-survey segments (100m x 100m), and number of years since each segment was burned,...

A study was conducted during 2004 to examine soil carbon storage of Prairie Pothole Region wetland catchments. These data represent the soil profile descriptions performed during that study; the remaining data were published previously (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7KS6QG2). Soil profile descriptions were performed at 270 temporary, seasonal, and semipermanent wetland catchments distributed throughout the Glaciated Plains and Missouri Coteau physiographic regions of the Prairie Pothole Region. Data were collected from four to six wetland and upland zones of the catchment. Study sites included cropland, restored grassland (formerly cropland), and native prairie (no cultivation history) catchments located in Iowa, Minnesota,...

Woody encroachment and its effects on biodiversity in fens and grasslands has become an increasing concern in the conservation and management of plant communities. These data were collected to examine the effects of spring and summer prescribed burns on the plant community, cover, and structure in open and partially wooded fens at Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Michigan, using a before-after-control-impact design. Paired, 1-ha blocks were established in two fen areas, C3 and Marsh Creek, and data collected for two years before burning (2006-07) and three years after burning (2008-10). Treatments were C3 control, C3 spring burn (May 2008), Marsh Creek control, and Marsh Creek summer burn (July 2008); data were also...

The whooping crane (Grus americana) is a listed, endangered species in North America, protected under federal legislation in the United States and Canada. The only self-sustaining and wild population of Whooping Cranes nests at and near Wood Buffalo National Park near the provincial border of Northwest Territories and Alberta, Canada. Birds from this population migrate through the Great Plains of North America and spend a nonbreeding period along the Gulf Coast of Texas at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding lands. These data represent predictions from a resource selection function using GPS locations between 2010 and 2016 during migration. This surface is a composite of drought and non-drought conditions...
