Two non-native bigheaded carp species have invaded the Illinois River system and are a potential threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem. Discharges from industry, wastewater treatment plants, and urban and agricultural runoff, may be a factor contributing to the stalling of the upstream movement of the bigheaded carp population front near Illinois Waterway mile 278. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 4 sets of water samples under a range of seasonal and hydrologic conditions from 3 locations upstream and 4 locations downstream from river mile 278 using a Lagrangian-style sampling strategy. Water samples were analyzed for over 639 constituents of which 280 were detected at least once, including many anthropogenic...

The U.S. Geological Survey-Illinois Water Science Center collected bathymetric data in Lake Calumet and a portion of the Calumet River in the vicinity of Lake Calumet to produce a bathymetric map. The bathymetric survey was conducted over three days (July 26, September 11, and November 7, 2012). Lake Calumet has become a focus area for Asian carp rapid response efforts by state and federal agencies and very little bathymetric data existed prior to this survey. This bathymetric survey provides data for a variety of scientific and engineering studies of the area; for example, hydraulic modelling of water and sediment transport from Lake Calumet to the Calumet River. Duncker, J.J., Johnson, K.K., and Sharpe, J.B.,...

Description of Work Several techniques will be used to characterize these potential controlling factors and data collection will be coordinated with the other agencies efforts to provide maximum complementary data collection and analysis. Flow, velocity and a suite of water-quality parameters (water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, chlorophyll-a, blue-green algae, nitrate and turbidity) will be collected in the main channel and backwater areas of the river. Plankton sampling data from the Illinois Department of Natural History will be used to characterize the available food supply in this reach of the river. Day-to-day movement of Asian carp recorded from field observations and telemetered...

On August 31, 2015, USGS Illinois Water Science Center staff deployed a 2000 kHz side-looking acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM) in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) at the Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS). These data were collected as a fully loaded commercial barge tow traversed the EDBS and passed the ADVM three times, and as several smaller vessels and an unloaded barge tow passed the ADVM. The ADVM was mounted to a rigid 2-inch PVC pipe in compliance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operational safety protocols for working in or near the EDBS. The pipe with ADVM was lowered 4.5 feet below the water surface on the west (right) bank of the canal at a location approximately 477 feet...

These datasets (e.g., 'Starved Rock fish clearing_multi-beam imaging sonar fish data_Pre-clearing_Sonar-s1.csv') include exported information (e.g., fish detection counts) from processed fixed-location multi-beam imaging sonar and mobile side-scan sonar data. Fish abundance in the navigation lock was determined using mobile side-scan surveys, while multi-beam imaging sonars were used to determine fish counts relative to time (i.e., fish per minute). The datasets were used to examine the efficacy of electricity and underwater acoustics, used in tandem, to affect fish abundance (as determined by hydroacoustic data sampling).

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is evaluating the placement of dredged material in the nearshore areas of Lake Michigan as a means to replenish sand at selected beaches. In order to elucidate the physical processes in the nearshore environment that transport and distribute sand to the beach, the USACE-Chicago District and the US Geological Survey (USGS) developed a plan for a beach nourishment study on Lake Michigan near Burns Harbor/Ogden Dunes, Indiana. As part of this plan, the USGS conducted hydrodynamic and bathymetric surveys of the study area before and after placement of dredged material in the nearshore zone. The planned placement of dredge material in the study area occurred between June 15, 2016...

Bubble curtain systems, also called “bubblers,” are used in navigation locks to prevent the buildup of ice around the gates in the winter. It has been proposed that bubblers could potentially serve an additional purpose as a deterrent to the upstream movement of aquatic invasive species through locks. An interagency study involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey is aimed at assessing this potential (Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee, 2019). As part of this effort, on September 17 and 18, 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey measured water velocities around the bubble curtain system in Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. Peoria Lock has “sill...
