ADCP data were collected on two separate occasions (May 14-15, 2013 and May 28, 2013) in the Marseilles Pool on the Illinois River using a Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler with integrated Trimble GPS. ADCP data was collected in reciprocal pairs along cross-sections and along roughly streamwise oriented lines between cross-sections. The data are provided in: (1) a zipped folder containing classic ascii output files exported from WinRiverII software, and a README text file indicating which files are reciprocal pairs, and which files are streamwise oriented lines (2) a zipped folder containing KML files for each transect.

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9RZ8GHO. On November 4-7, 2019, bathymetric data were collected on the Sandusky River between Tiffin and Fremont, Ohio. Wading measurements were made at cross-sections shallower than about 1 foot using a survey pole with a Trimble R10 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver connected to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) real-time virtual reference station (VRS) network. Cross-sections that were deeper than about 1 foot were measured with a CEE-ECHO single-beam echosounder mounted to a canoe. A Trimble R10 GNSS receiver connected to the ODOT real-time VRS network was mounted directly above...

Two non-native bigheaded carp species have invaded the Illinois River system and are a potential threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem. Discharges from industry, wastewater treatment plants, and urban and agricultural runoff, may be a factor contributing to the stalling of the upstream movement of the bigheaded carp population front near Illinois Waterway mile 278. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 4 sets of water samples under a range of seasonal and hydrologic conditions from 3 locations upstream and 4 locations downstream from river mile 278 using a Lagrangian-style sampling strategy. Water samples were analyzed for over 639 constituents of which 280 were detected at least once, including many anthropogenic...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during March 2022 over a distance of 2,574.6 line kilometers in southeast and southwest Wisconsin. These data were collected in support of an effort to improve estimates of depth to bedrock through a collaborative project between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), and Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS). Data were acquired by SkyTEM Canada Inc. with the SkyTEM 304M time-domain helicopter-borne electromagnetic system together with a Geometrics G822A cesium vapor magnetometer. The survey was acquired at a nominal flight height of 30 - 40 meters (m)...

These datasets (e.g., 'Starved Rock fish clearing_multi-beam imaging sonar fish data_Pre-clearing_Sonar-s1.csv') include exported information (e.g., fish detection counts) from processed fixed-location multi-beam imaging sonar and mobile side-scan sonar data. Fish abundance in the navigation lock was determined using mobile side-scan surveys, while multi-beam imaging sonars were used to determine fish counts relative to time (i.e., fish per minute). The datasets were used to examine the efficacy of electricity and underwater acoustics, used in tandem, to affect fish abundance (as determined by hydroacoustic data sampling).

The Grand Calumet River is located east of Chicago, Illinois and flows east to west across the Indiana-Illinois border to its confluence with the Little Calumet River. In 2017, a suite of water level, temperature, and bathymetric data were collected along the Grand Calumet River. Water level and water temperature were monitored continuously at five locations in the Grand Calumet River between late February and early November 2017, using Van Essen Mini-Diver sensors. Atmospheric pressure in the area was monitored continuously during this time period using a Van Essen Mini-Diver pressure transducer. The water pressure data were compensated for variations in atmospheric pressure and converted to water levels. A bathymetric...

Water level and water temperature were continuously monitored at five locations in the Grand Calumet River between late February and early November 2017, using Van Essen Mini-Diver DI 501 dataloggers (herein referred to as "Mini-Divers"). The Mini-Divers are submersible instruments with sensors for measuring and recording water pressure and temperature. Atmospheric pressure in the area was continuously monitored during this time period...

A Trimble R10 GNSS receiver connected to the ODOT real-time VRS network was mounted directly above the echosounder and integrated with the echosounder data collection unit to convert measured depths to bed elevations....

Bubble curtain systems, also called “bubblers,” are used in navigation locks to prevent the buildup of ice around the gates in the winter. It has been proposed that bubblers could potentially serve an additional purpose as a deterrent to the upstream movement of aquatic invasive species through locks. An interagency study involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey is aimed at assessing this potential (Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee, 2019). As part of this effort, on September 17 and 18, 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey measured water velocities around the bubble curtain system in Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. Peoria Lock has “sill...

This data release has been deprecated. For the updated data release, please visit: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9SSILDS. The U.S. Geological Survey monitors water surface flow reversals, commercial vessel traffic, and temperature and specific conductance in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Chicago, Illinois. This data release is the 2018 water year summary of the EDBS monitoring data. Water surface flow reversals at the EDBS are monitored using surface velocity radar. Commercial vessel traffic patterns through the EDBS are documented using a motion-activated video camera. Temperature and specific conductance are reported in near real-time...

The Grand Calumet River is located east of Chicago, Illinois and flows east to west across the Indiana-Illinois border to its confluence with the Little Calumet River. In 2017, a suite of water level, temperature, and bathymetric data were collected along the Grand Calumet River. A bathymetric survey was accomplished over seven days in July, August, and October 2017, using the depth-sounding capabilities of a Teledyne RDI WorkHorse Rio Grande Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) deployed from a canoe. The depth data were converted to bed elevations using water level data collected with Mini-Diver sensors in combination with water level data from two U.S. Geological Survey streamgaging stations (05536357 GRAND...
