Interannual differences in the water quality of Anvil Lake, WI, were examined to determine how water level and climate affect the hydrodynamics and trophic state of shallow lakes, and their importance compared to anthropogenic changes in the watershed. To determine how changes in water level may affect these processes, the General Lake Model (GLM) was used to simulate how the lake’s thermal structure should change in response to changes in water level using R. This dataset includes the data inputs to the GLM model and the direct outputs from the model. Model Calibration (GLM_CalibrationZ); Simulation of with Deep Lake and Cold Weather (GLM_Deep_Cold_SimulationZ); Simulation of with Deep Lake and Hot Weather (GLM_Deep_Hot_SimulationZ);...
The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model was used to aid in the interpretation of monitoring data and simulate nutrient loads in streams across the Midwest Region of the United States. SPARROW is a hybrid empirical/process-based mass balance model that can be used to estimate the major sources and environmental factors that affect the long-term supply, transport, and fate of contaminants in streams. The spatially explicit model structure is defined by a river reach network coupled with contributing catchments. The model is calibrated by statistically relating watershed sources and transport-related properties to monitoring-based water-quality load...
Nitrogen and phosphorus losses from agricultural areas have impacted the water quality of downstream rivers, lakes, and oceans. As a result, investment in the adoption of agricultural best management practices (BMPs) has grown but assessments of their effectiveness at large spatial scales have been sparse. This study applies regional Spatially Referenced Regression On Watershed-attributes (SPARROW) models developed for the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast regions of the United States to quantify regional effects of BMPs on nutrient losses from agricultural lands. These models were used because they account for specific BMPs in the prediction of instream nutrient loads. This data release accompanies the journal...

Three eutrophication models (mass balance, BATHUB, and Jensen models) were developed and calibrated for the Winnebago Pools, Wisconsin. These models were used to quantify the input of phosphorus from the sediments of the lakes, and determine how the water quality (total phosphorus concentration, chlorophyll a concentrations, and Secchi depth) should respond to changes in phosphorus loading from the watershed. Each of the models were developed using flow and phosphorus inputs from internal and external sources. This data release is subdivided into 4 parts: 1) Lake Winnebago water-quality data; 2) Mass balance of water and phosphorus for Lake Winnebago, with estimated internal loading of phosphorus estimates; 3) BATHTUB...
This USGS data release contains long-term mean annual total nitrogen and total phosphorus load estimates, and the model coefficients used to obtain the load estimates, for streams in the Midwest Region of the United States. The loads were estimated using the Fluxmaster program (Schwarz and others, 2006, https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/2006/tm6b3) with a 5-parameter model and detrending to 2012 following the methods described in Saad and others, 2011 (https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1752-1688.2011.00575.x). A subset of these load estimates are described in Robertson and Saad, 2021 (https://doi.org/10.1111/1752-1688.12905) and were used to evaluate differences in load estimates in the Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin based...
In this data release, we provide the data used to compute total annual phosphorus loads from tributaries and direct drainages to the Great Lakes during 2012-18 using the model load ratio approach and the unit area load approach and the resulting annual loads for 2012–18. This data release consists of: (1) measured loads at 24 sites, computed using the surrogate regression approach (Robertson et al., 2018; Koltun, 2020) that were monitored as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative project, (2) estimated annual loads at point source facilities throughout the Great Lakes Basin obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies, (3) loads subdivided into nonpoint and point source contributions,...

Phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended-sediment loads, in 24 U.S. tributaries of the Great Lakes, were calculated using U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring program for the period Oct 2010 through Sept 2020 (USGS water years 2011–2020). Total phosphorus, orthophosphate, particulate phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate plus nitrite, ammonium plus ammonia, and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). The load results represent the total mass of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment exported downstream at each tributary site....

In this data release, we provide data to describe the water quality in Green Lake, Wisconsin, from 1905 to 2020, primarily the constituents for which it is impaired, including near-surface total phosphorus concentrations and metalimnetic dissolved oxygen concentrations, and quantify the water and phosphorus inputs to the lake. We also provide inputs to and outputs from the General Lake Model coupled to the Aquatic Ecodynamics modeling library (GLM-AED) hydrodynamic water-quality model to describe the factors that have caused low dissolved oxygen concentrations in the metalimnion of Green Lake; and quantify how changes in phosphorus loading should affect near-surface total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentrations,...

Concentrations and loads of total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, and suspended solids were estimated for three sites on the Lower Fox River for October 1988 through September 2021. The sites are the Fox River at Neenah-Menasha (040844105), Fox River at DePere (04085059), and Fox River at the Mouth (040851385). Data analysis was conducted with the Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge, and Season (WRTDS) method. Daily loads were estimated using the WRTDS method with Kalman filtering. To determine changes in loads over this period, the annual load results were flow-normalized to standardize for the varying flow dynamics that occurred among years. The model archive contains the R code for running the WRTDS model,...
