The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. It represents a relative ranking of HUC12 watersheds according to the quantity and quality of habitat as described in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Watersheds (HUC12) were ranked by calculating the length-weighted average Management Opportunity scores within them. Action classes are different for Mainstem Big Rivers than for for Med/Low-gradient Streams & Rivers of the coastal plains and Upland Streams & Rivers, so action and overall scores for this system were calculated separately. Unlike the terrestrial...

Temporal dynamics of each GCPO priority system are recognized as important contributors to the overall system integrity. The Integrated Science Agenda (ISA) alludes to the desired condition that forest structure should be dominated by mature upland hardwood stands across the greater landscape. However, to ensure future forest sustainability a small portion (≤10% of the landscape) should be in a state of regeneration, or early forest succession. The ISA provides this endpoint as a general target, but lacks specificity regarding the desired composition of forest stand ages because there is limited literature available that assesses upland hardwood stand age from an ecosystem integrity perspective. Priority wildlife...

Rivers in the SRLCC differ from one another in flow characteristics, levels of regulation, and vulnerability to wildfire; characteristics that will be influenced by climate change (Seager et al. 2007, Mortiz et al. 2012). An understanding of how changes in streamflow and wildfire frequency will affect structure of live and dead woody vegetation is needed to for managers assess the vulnerability of riparian obligate species to climate change. We are developing stochastic transition models for cottonwood trees and snags along the Middle Rio Grande by modifying Lytle and Merritts (2004) stage-structured cottonwood population model. By incorporating influences of flood and wildfire into stage transition rates, we can...

Ecological regions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. These general purpose regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across international, national, province and state agencies, and nongovernment organizations that are responsible for different types of resources within the same geographical areas.A Roman numeral hierarchical scheme has been adopted for different levels for ecological regions. Level I is the coarsest level, dividing North America...

These data represent stream temperature observation locations for a portion of a larger study area known as the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog. These data were collected and processed as part of the NorWeST stream temperature project http://www.fs.fed.us/rm/boise/AWAE/projects/NorWeST.htmlThese thermograph locations and the attendant temperature observations were used as the baseline data for the NorWeST stream temperature modeling project. As a result, modeled temperatures will be most reliable in areas with the greatest density of thermographs. These data reside in ESRI shapefile format, ArcGIS version 9.3. The point shapefile extents correspond to...

These data represent modeled stream temperatures for a portion of a larger dataset known as the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) (https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog). This metadata record is a combined description for two spatial data feature types, vector lines and points, which cover the same geographic area. The line features are derived from NHDPlus (http://www.horizon-systems.com/NHDPlus/index.php) (USEPA and USGS, 2010) stream lines and the point data represent 1 km intervals along the NHDPlus stream network. Both datasets contain identical modeled stream temperature attributes. These modeled stream temperatures were generated as part of the U.S. Forest Service NorWeST stream temperature...

This region-wide coordinated bird monitoring program, supported by state, federal, tribal, nongovernmental organizations, and two statewide bird conservation partnerships, is designed to provide spatially-referenced baseline data for science-based biological planning and conservation design for the Great Northern LCC and its partners that is directly comparable with other landscapes and BCRs. We are requesting a third year of funding to continue sampling in BCR10 Montana and Idaho to enhance our ability to make robust inference to bird populations on grassland, shrublands, and riparian systems. These data currently are being used by project partners to develop spatially-explicit models that will allow assessment...

Lake polygons within the Fish Creek Watershed, Alaska were created and classified for a number of variables relevant to size, depth, hydrology, connectivity etc. Products derived from a 5m resolution IfSAR digital surface model by calculating a zero slope. Each feature was expanded by one pixel around the entire perimeter since all waterbodies were truncated by this during the slope calculation. Lakes >=1ha were manually extracted from the dataset and their perimeters further corrected using 2002 CIR orthophotography.

This dataset provides transboundary census information in the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem. In Canada the data are from the 2011 census collected at the dissemination block level, in the United States the data are assembled from the 2010 census. Data on total population and total dwellings in each census unit are available. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. The CMP is collaborative group of land managers, scientists, and stakeholder in the CCE. For more information on the CMP and its collaborators,...

For the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE), the riparian ecosystem was classified using three existing layers: I) a streams network, II) a water class of the landcover layer, and III) a 22 meter digital elevation model (DEM).NOTE: There were minor issues with data integrity, as the water class of the landcover layer and the streams layer were not mutually exclusive: it was found that lakes were often represented as streams. (i) Stream network was rasterized (Polyline to Raster tool) after the features were dossolved. (ii) Rasters from each of the streams and lake classes are added together for full hydrology. Riparian classification systems are based typically on two to three characteristics, depending on the...

Despite the lack of surface flows, the Colorado River riparian corridor in Mexico has proven to be ecologically resilient. Floods in the 1980s and 90s in the region brought back large swaths of native riparian habitat, which still persist today in some areas along the river. Because the historic floodplain is extremely important for agricultural production and therefore the local economy, habitat maintenance must be integrated with continued utilization of lands and water for this purpose. The riparian, marsh, and open-water areas found in Reach 4 provide critical habitat for both migratory and resident riparian bird species. Due to its ecological importance, the riparian corridor and Reach 4 in particular have been...

Carnivore carcasses recorded by Montana Department of Transportation, Idaho Department of Fish & Game, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service were aggregated to the nearest mile marker for major roads of the U.S. Northern Rockies. Note that wildlife carcass collection and reporting protocols and frequency differ between states and among maintenance sections within states. Carcass presence should therefore be used only to explore general patterns and not for statistical inference.
