This dataset includes shorelines that span 68 years, from 1948 to 2016, for the north coast of Alaska from Icy Cape to Cape Prince of Wales. Shorelines were compiled from topographic survey sheets (T-sheets; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)) and aerial orthophotographs (U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Alaska High Altitude Photography (AHAP)). Historical shoreline positions serve as easily understood features that can be used to describe the movement of beaches through time. These data are used to calculate rates of shoreline change for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Assessment of Shoreline Change Project. Rates of long-term and short-term shoreline change were generated in a GIS using...

A comprehensive map of Quaternary faults has been generated for offshore of California. The Quaternary fault map includes mapped geometries and attribute information for offshore fault systems located in California State and Federal waters. The polyline shapefile and matching KML file have been compiled from previously published mapping where relatively dense, high-resolution marine geophysical data exist. The data are accompanied by a PDF containing citations for the compiled source data. Most of the marine geophysical data used for mapping have been processed, merged, and released by the USGS in maps, data releases, and journal publications in support of the California Seafloor Mapping Program and the U.S. West...

This dataset contains environmental tracer data from surface water and groundwater samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in Redwell Basin, an alpine watershed in the Elk Mountains near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The basin is underlain by interbedded shale and sandstone that have been variably hydrothermally altered and silicified by local magmatic intrusions. Samples were collected from 2017 to 2019 from bedrock monitoring wells completed at multiple depths, shallow hand-installed piezometers and mini boreholes, springs, mine adits, and streams. The tracer data include stable isotopes of water (oxygen-18 and deuterium), tritium, dissolved noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and helium-3/helium-4...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled national shoreline data for more than 20 years to document coastal change and serve the needs of research, management, and the public. Maintaining a record of historical shoreline positions is an effective method to monitor national shoreline evolution over time, enabling scientists to identify areas most susceptible to erosion or accretion. These data can help coastal managers and planners understand which areas of the coast are vulnerable to change. This data release includes two new mean high water (MHW) shorelines extracted from lidar data collected in 2010 and 2017-2018. Previously published historical shorelines for South Carolina (Kratzmann and others, 2017)...

Following the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano (Neal et al, 2019) and the subsequent collapse of the Halema’uma’u crater, groundwater gradually seeped into the newly-deepened crater (Nadeau and others, 2020). Water was first observed in the crater on 7/26/2019, and the water level increased over time until 12/20/2020, when the crater again filled with lava, vaporizing the lake. In the intervening time, three sets of water samples were collected by unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS) and analyzed for water chemistry, water isotopes, and sulfur isotopes. The solids filtered from the collected water samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM, as well as digested and analyzed for their chemical composition. Additionally, two...

wy_lvl9_coarsescale: Wyoming hierarchical cluster level 9 (coarse-scale) for Greater sage-grouse We developed a hierarchical clustering approach that identifies biologically relevant landscape units that can 1) be used as a long-term population monitoring framework, 2) be repeated across the Greater sage-grouse range, 3) be used to track the outcomes of local and regional populations by comparing population changes across scales, and 4) be used to inform where to best spatially target studies that identify the processes and mechanisms causing population trends to change among spatial scales. The spatial variability in the amount and quality of habitat resources can affect local population success and result in different...

Observations of irrigated agricultural land within the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin in Arizona. Digitized field boundaries were used to locate crops for in situ verification once in 2022; crop verification occurred on June 2nd. Field boundaries were digitized from U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Imagery Program County Mosaic 2021 imagery for Arizona and supplemented with Landsat and Sentinel2 imagery collections accessed via the Sentinel Hub, Sentinel Playground (https://apps.sentinel-hub.com/sentinel-playground). Satellite images were also used to identify the length of the growing season and crop condition. Water withdrawals were calculated using the modified Blaney-Criddle model of...

Hydrologic reconnaissance of Mineral Creek near Silverton, Colo., was conducted from June 25-27, 2020. Both banks of Mineral Creek and the adjacent hillsides were walked, starting near the ghost town of Chattanooga and proceeding downstream to the confluence of Mineral Creek with the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek. The purpose of this reconnaissance was to identify areas of emergent groundwater on the right (EGR) and left (EGL) banks, a task that was accomplished by following observed surface flows (seeps and springs) upgradient to the point at which they emanated from the subsurface. Coordinates, using a handheld global positioning system (GPS) device, and photographs were obtained at these locations of emergent...

Alaska permafrost characterization: Borehole Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Data & Models from 2019-2020
Borehole nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at Big Trail Lake, a thermokarst lake outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, to quantify unfrozen water content and soil properties at select sites in and around the lake edge. In September 2019, NMR data were collected within two 2.3 m deep boreholes adjacent to the East and North perpendicular electrical resistivity survey lines. Manual permafrost-probe measurements of thaw depths were also collected. These two boreholes were logged a second time in late March 2020. Additional one-time NMR measurements of liquid water content were collected in September 2019 within the lakebed sediments (0-25 cm depth) in approximately 2.5...

In summer 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey partnered with the U.S Department of Energy and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to conduct the Mid-Atlantic Resources Imaging Experiment (MATRIX) as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Gas Hydrates Project. The field program objectives were to acquire high-resolution 2-dimensional multichannel seismic-reflection and split-beam echo sounder data along the U.S Atlantic margin between North Carolina and New Jersey to determine the distribution of methane gas hydrates in below-sea floor sediments and investigate potential connections between gas hydrate dynamics and sea floor methane seepage. MATRIX field work was carried out between August 8 and August 28, 2018 on the...

This dataset contains the final water-level records (334) that met all threshold criteria and had an absolute residual (ABS_PSEUDO_LEV) of less than 20 feet. The threshold of 20 feet was selected based on water-level changes of the U.S. Geological Survey groundwater site 363551090152801 Qulin, in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. This final dataset is considered a best representation of the true water-levels in the aquifer.

Hydrology,
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) computed rasters of pre-solved values for the watersheds draining to the pixel delineation point representing the watershed's mean maximum 30-minute precipitation occurring on average once in 2 years from NOAA Atlas 14. These values will be served in the National StreamStats Fire-Hydrology application to describe delineated watersheds ( https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ ). The StreamStats application provides access to spatial analysis tools that are useful for water-resources planning and management, and for engineering and design purposes. The map-based user interface can be used to delineate drainage areas, to retrieve basin characteristics, to estimate flow statistics, and more.

The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management launched the Shoreline Change Project in 1989 to identify erosion-prone areas of the coast by compiling a database of historical (mid 1800's-1989) shoreline positions. Trends of shoreline position over long and short-term timescales provide information to landowners, managers, and potential buyers about possible future impacts to coastal resources and infrastructure. In 2001, a 1994 shoreline was added to calculate both long- and short-term shoreline change rates along ocean-facing sections of the Massachusetts coast. In 2013, two oceanfront shorelines for Massachusetts were added using 2008-2009 color aerial orthoimagery and 2007 topographic lidar datasets obtained...

Summary This data release contains postprocessed model output from simulations of hypothetical rapid motion of landslides, subsequent wave generation, and wave propagation. A modeled tsunami wave was generated by rapid motion of unstable material into Barry Arm Fjord. This wave propagated through Prince William Sound and then into Passage Canal east of Whittier. Here we consider only the largest wave-generating scenario presented by Barnhart and others (2021a, 2021b) and use a simulation setup similar to that work. The results presented here are not identical to those presented in Barnhart and others (2021a, 2021b) because the results in this data release were obtained using an expanded dataset of topography and...

During Hurricane Irma in September 2017, Florida and Georgia experienced significant impacts to beaches, dunes, barrier islands, and coral reefs. Extensive erosion and coral losses result in increased immediate and long-term hazards to shorelines that include densely populated regions. These hazards put critical infrastructure at risk to future flooding and erosion and may cause economic losses. The USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards Resources Program (CMHRP) is assessing hurricane-induced coastal erosion along the southeast US coastline and implications for vulnerability to future storms. Shoreline positions were compiled prior to and following Hurricane Irma along the sandy shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic...
