CE-QUAL-W2, a mechanistic, two-dimensional model of hydrodynamics and water quality (Portland State University, 2021), was developed and calibrated for J. Percy Priest Reservoir, Tennessee, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reservoir on the Stones River, southeast of Nashville, Tennessee. The J. Percy Priest CE-QUAL-W2 model was simulated and calibrated using USACE data collected from January 2012 through May 2019. Constituent loads were developed for the model using the LOAD ESTimator (LOADEST; U.S. Geological Survey, 2016) and were based on water-quality data collected by the USACE from January 2005 through May 2019. The calibrated model will be used by the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation...

The elemental concentration over time of sediments from four trenches from the Aztec drinking water reservoir #1 was measured. The source of water to the reservoir is the Animas River, which has historical mining sites in the watershed. In order to evaluate the geochemical record in the sediments, several types of data were collected. Bulk chemical analysis of sediments with depth in the reservoir as well as X-ray fluorescence measurements provide information about the sediment total chemistry. Batch experiments where sediments are reacted with different reagents provide information about the mobility of major and trace elements from the sediments into the reservoir water or environment. Sediment field descriptions...

The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11) was passed into law on March 30, 2009. Sub-title F of the law, also known as the SECURE (Science and Engineering to Comprehensively Understand and Responsibly Enhance) Water Act, calls for the establishment of a “national water availability and use assessment program” in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The recommendation for a national assessment of the available water resources was driven by the lack of such an assessment since 1978. In fulfillment of the Act, the USGS developed the National Water Census (NWC), under the auspices of the USGS Water Availability and Use Program, and as part of that activity, among others, collected water withdrawal...

Source water for West Virginia’s public water systems is pumped from groundwater aquifers or withdrawn from the state’s rivers and lakes. These systems provide drinking water to a majority of the state’s population and require constant monitoring for known and emerging contaminants. Groundwater contamination from Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) has occurred in West Virginia around industrial facilities and military installations. To understand the potential impact of PFAS contamination in the state’s source water, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) and West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) required information on the state-wide distribution of the contaminant....

A simple water budget includes precipitation, streamflow, change in storage, evapotranspiration, and residuals: P=Q + ET + ΔS + e. It is essential to include the managed component (i.e., the “human” component) to close the water budget and reduce the magnitude of the residuals from “natural” water budgets. Some of the largest components of managed water withdraws are public supply, irrigation, and thermoelectric. The modified water budget is: P=Q + ET + ΔS + (PS + Irr + TE) + e, where PS is public supply, Irr is irrigation, and TE is thermoelectric water use. This data release contains both the natural and managed components of the water budget for a region within the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River...

Since 1975, annual water use for Louisiana has been published on a 5-year basis and is used for a variety of purposes. As the Sparta aquifer is a heavily used aquifer, is the sole source of groundwater for many parishes in Louisiana, and recent withdrawals have exceeded the Sparta’s natural recharge, a more frequent compilation of water usage for the Sparta aquifer in Louisiana is needed to inform State conservation groups and efforts, private and public entities, and to feed groundwater models. This data release contains water withdrawn for public supply, thermoelectric, and industrial use from the Sparta aquifer in 2020, tabulated by parish and water-use category. The estimated public-supply withdrawals in 2020...
