This dataset includes stable hydrogen isotope values of the nonexchangeable hydrogen contained in the outer most secondary feathers of dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis thurberi) collected from the University of California San Diego campus in La Jolla, California in 2014. Hydrogen isotope values in feathers have become a powerful tool for inferring the breeding grounds of a wide variety of avian species. In most of these migratory species, feathers are molted prior to departing the breeding grounds for more overwintering regions to the south. This dataset includes ovary mass and stable hydrogen isotope compositions of feathers and claws from resident and migratory female dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) collected during early spring at Mountain Lake Biological Station, Pembroke, Virginia. A total of 18 migrant and 15 resident female dark-eyed juncos, a songbird that exhibits seasonal sympatry, were caught during March-April. This dataset includes the field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, seston, and sediment collected from Lake Powell, within Glen Canyon National Recreation area (GLCA), during high flow (May-June 2014) and low flow (August 2015) conditions. A second data file contains modeled estimates of contaminant or nutrient concentrations in Pacific Salmon. The modeled estimates were derived from Bayesian generalized linear models (contaminant or nutrient concentrations) or from Bayesian generalized additive models (Salmon Escapement).

This dataset includes radiogenic strontium isotope compositions of non-native walleye otoliths collected from select areas of the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). Strontium isotope data have been widely used to assess natal areas for a variety of fish species. Following on previous work, this project sought to fill data gaps for walleye collected from the Colorado River (river miles 11-109.3), the lower Green River, Lake Powell, and McPhee Reservoir. Groundwater, soil pore water, and surface water were collected in and near wetland P1 in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota in August 2013. Groundwater was collected from established wells (17, 18, and 22) via peristaltic pump. Surface water was collected from P1 ponded water via grab sample. Soil pore water was collected using drive point samplers and one suction lysimeter. Water samples were analyzed for pH and major ion chemistry.

In response to the 2010 Fourmile Canyon fire near Boulder, Colorado, the U.S. Geological Survey collected data to support investigations into the magnitude and critical drivers of water-quality impairment after wildfire. We analyzed chemistry of stream water, sediment, wildfire ash, soil, dust, and mine waste for metals and other parameters in order to evaluate the effects of legacy mining and wildfire on stream chemistry in the Colorado Front Range, USA. This data release includes data that were published earlier (McCleskey et al., 2012; Murphy et al., 2018).

This dataset includes lignin phenol monomer concentrations normalized to 100 mg of organic carbon. These analyses were conducted on select intervals from peat cores collected at the Alligator River (AR) and Great Dismal Swamp (GDS) National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina and Virginia/North Carolina, USA, respectively. The eight lignin phenol monomers provide unique proxy information on the source, character, and state of decomposition of soil organic matter. This dataset includes stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values for the inner tail retrices of three subspecies of barn swallow (Hirundo rustica rustica, H. r. tytleri, and H. r. gutturalis). Sampling was conducted in Russia (summer 2013), China (summer 2014), Mongolia (summer 2014), Japan (summer 2014), and western China (summer 2015) using mist nets. The trace element selenium is an essential element with a narrow window between concentrations needed to support life and those that cause toxicity to egg laying organisms. Selenium bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is primarily the result of trophic transfer through food webs and is poorly predicted by dissolved concentrations in freshwater bodies. To better understand the hydrologic and biological dynamics that control selenium accumulation into fishes of the Lower Gunnison River Basin (Colorado), ecosystem scale selenium accumulation models were developed from data collected between June 2015 and October 2016.

Radiocarbon dating of silicified wood was performed at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Radiocarbon Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. All samples were chemically treated using the standard acid-base-acid (ABA) procedure before being combusted online in the presence of excess high-purity oxygen. Water and other contaminant gases were removed using cryogenic separation techniques, and the resulting purified CO2 gas was measured manometrically and converted to graphite using an iron catalyst and hydrogen reduction (Vogel et al., 1984). This data release includes laboratory analyses for fish tissue samples collected from Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River Basin in Montana during 2022. Samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center in cooperation with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Analyses include histology, percent moisture, and 30 elements, including selenium, mercury, and methylmercury. This data release also compiles laboratory quality-assurance and quality-control data associated with the samples.

These data have been collected as part of a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. This project began in 2016 and consisted of a mesocosm experiment quantifying short term responses by a transplanted natural diatom dominant algae community exposed to gradients of nitrogen, phosphorous, and a mixture of both nitrogen and phosphorus. The data consist of water quality parameters such as temperature and pH as well as aqueous nutrient concentrations and algae responses, including chlorophyll a concentrations, algae dry mass, algae ash-free dry mass, and intra-cellular phosphorus and nitrogen in algae. Silicified wood samples were vacuum impregnated with epoxy, sectioned, and sputter coated with 10 nm Au/Pd at the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA. Samples were imaged in a Tescan VEGA3 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Oxford 150 mm2 X-MaxN large area energy dispersive spectrometer at the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, CA. Backscatter (BSE) images were collected with an accelerating voltage (HV) of 30 kV and a working distance (WD) of ~15 mm. Magnification is indicated on individual images. The data files for Scanning Electron Microsocopy (SEM) contain representative SEM-BSE images of samples OFL101 and OFL103-2. This research was conducted under Yellowstone Research Permit YELL-SCI-8030.

Old Faithful Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park is one of the best studied geysers in the world. Under research permit YELL-SCI-8030, samples from 13 silicified tree remnants were collected adjacent to the Old Faithful Geyser cone in April and November 2019. The silicified wood samples were dated using the radiocarbon (14C) method and were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine the extent of wood silicification. This study was conducted in order to provide new information on the geyser’s past decadal to centennial eruptive activity. Understanding Old Faithful’s past could provide a baseline for understanding future changes in its eruption intervals.

Once accumulated at the base of the food web, mercury can move between animals that are linked trophically. This dataset includes stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values for the tissues and parasites of California sea lions and ice seals from California and Alaska coastal waters necropsied and harvested in 2009-2010 respectively. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data are useful for clarifying trophic relationships in host-parasite systems. These data were used in tandem with tissue mercury concentrations to explore the role of gastrointestinal parasites on pinniped mercury exposure. This dataset includes stable carbon isotope values, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose concentrations (expressed as percent of ash-free dry mass) for riparian cottonwood (Populus deltoides) tree rings growing on the Little Missouri River floodplain, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota.
