This data release provides geochemical, sedimentological, and geochronological data from interbedded fluvial and marsh deposits and radiocarbon dates of the section spanning the last 1500 years from the Pallett Creek paleoseismic site, California. The samples were collected to support paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the site and refine several previous investigations of paleoearthquakes along the San Andreas Fault (Sieh, 1978; Sieh, 1984; Sieh et al., 1989; Biasi and Weldon, 1994; Scharer et al., 2011). Geochemical and sedimentological data include grain size, magnetic susceptibility, dry bulk density, percent total organic matter, and percent total carbonate at contiguous 1 cm spacing and carbon (total C)...

In support of mapping ecological conditions (e.g. invasive annual grass) in sagebrush-dominated landscapes of the western United States, we developed weekly (starting from week 7 to week 42 and Week 1 starts January 1 or Day of the year 1 to 7, week 2 is from Day of year 8 to 14, and so on) 30-m cloud-free Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 2016 to 2019. The data was generated with machine-learning techniques (i.e., regression tree [RT]) and harmonized Landsat and Sentinel -2 (HLS) data. The geographic coverage includes areas in the Great Basin, the Snake River Plain, the state of Wyoming, and contiguous areas. This NDVI collection allows for local-scale detection and analysis such as, fuel breaks...
The 2018 KÄ«lauea eruption and caldera collapse generated intense cycles of seismicity tied to repeated large seismic (Mw ~5) collapse events associated with magma withdrawal from beneath the summit. To gain insight into the underlying dynamics and aid eruption response, we applied waveform-based earthquake detection and double-difference location as the eruption unfolded. Here, we augment these rapid results by grouping events based on patterns of correlation-derived phase polarities across the network. From April 29 to August 6, bracketing the eruption, we used ~2800 events cataloged by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to detect and precisely locate 44,000+ earthquakes. Resulting hypocentroids resolve complex,...
Between October 12, 2019 and December 13, 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey deployed 30 nodal seismometers in Humboldt county CA for the purpose of recording seismicity in the subducting Gorda plate. 20 instruments were deployed at the McBride ranch, around NCSN station KCT, and 10 were deployed at the Bureau of Land Management’s Lost Coast Headlands property. The nodes were replaced in mid-November after one month of recording due to battery life.

The U.S. Geological Survey acquired high-resolution P- and S-wave seismic data across the Frijoles Fault strand of the San Gregorio Fault Zone (SGFZ) at Año Nuevo, California in 2012. The SGFZ is a Holocene-active, dominantly right-lateral fault system that trends more than 200 km along the California coastline. The Frijoles Fault is one of several onshore strands of the SGF system, and together the strands represent a 3- to 4-km wide fault zone at Año Nuevo. Prior paleoseismology studies indicate highly variable slip-rate estimates, indicating considerable uncertainty about the slip history of the SGFZ and the seismic hazard it poses. Amongst the onshore strands of the SGFZ at Año Nuevo, the Frijoles Fault presented...

These data are 3D point cloud data collected by laser scanner in the Hetch Hetchy area of Yosemite National Park, USA. The data were collected to assess landscape change and vegetation response following the 2013 Rim wildfire. Filename convention: "hh_datatype_dd_ddmmyyyy_laserreturns_siteidentification". "datatype" is either "alsm" or "tls" The former was collected by the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping for the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service, and only a small portion of those data covering this study area are included here. The latter were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey using a Riegl VZ-400 laser scanner. "dd_dd" refers to first and last day of month of data collection. "mmyyyy"...
This dataset contains the supplemental information for the article "Oklahoma experiences largest earthquake during ongoing regional wastewater injection hazard mitigation efforts" published in Geophysical Research Letters (Yeck and others, 2017). Included is a table of relocated earthquake hypocenters and the velocity model used in the event relocations. These locations form the basis of the analysis presented in the article.

Surface rupture associated with the 2019 Ridgecrest, California earthquake sequence includes the dominantly left-lateral and northeast-striking M6.4 rupture and dominantly right-lateral and northwest-striking M7.1 rupture. This data release includes surface-displacement observations of these ruptures made by teams of federal, state, academic, and private sector geologists between July and November 2019. These displacement observations describe laterally and/or vertically displaced cultural and geomorphic features. Displacement data included in this release are a subset of rupture observations included in a Seismological Society of America Data Mine article (Ponti et al., in press). Our intent is to compile a complete...

A fundamental question in seismic hazard analysis is whether <30º-dipping low-angle normal faults (LANFs) slip seismogenically. In comparison to more steeply dipping (45-60º) normal faults, LANFs have the potential to produce stronger shaking because of their increased possible rupture area in the seismogenic crust. While LANFs have been documented globally, examples of seismogenically active LANFs are limited. The western margin of the Panamint Range in eastern California is defined by an archetypal LANF that dips west beneath Panamint Valley. In addition, high-angle dextral-oblique normal faults displace mid-to-late Quaternary alluvial fans near the range front. To image shallow (<1 km depth), crosscutting relationships...
Point cloud data collected on a steep, severely burned hillslope below Barfoot Peak near Rustler Park in the Chiricahua Mountains, AZ. The data were collected June 21, July 18, August 1, August 23, 2011 and March 14, 2012. The data were collected with a Leica Scanstation C10 High Definition Scanner. The data are delivered as georeferenced (WGS UTM zone 12N ellipsoid) and classified point clouds. The included files are: Chiri_20120314.laz Chiri_20110611.laz Chiri_20110718.laz Chiri_20110801.laz Chiri_20110823.laz
In May of 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey responded to the M6.5 Monte Cristo Range Earthquake, occurring near Tonopah, Nevada: https://www.usgs.gov/news/featured-story/m65-monte-cristo-range-earthquake. 60 DTCC SmartSolo 3-component nodal seismograph systems ("nodes") were deployed in the area and continuously recorded seismic data for about a month. Nodes were deployed in various arrays including a square grid, circular grid, linear array, and near 2 permanent strong-motion instruments. This report provides the metadata needed to analyze the seismic data.

The 2018 Update of the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model defines the potential for earthquake ground shaking for various probability levels across the conterminous United States and is applied in seismic provisions of building codes, insurance rate structures, risk assessments, and other public policy. The updated model represents an assessment of the best available science in earthquake hazards and incorporates new findings on earthquake ground shaking, seismicity, and long-period amplification over deep sedimentary basins. The new model represents an update of the seismic hazard model; previous versions were developed in 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014. The output from the National Seismic Hazard Model is a suite...
This Data Release consists of broadband ground motion simulations for 12 California region earthquakes. The ground motion simulations were done as part of a validation study that is described in more detail in Graves (2022). These simulations were computed using a hybrid simulation methodology (hereafter referred to as GP). The GP approach is a hybrid in that separate responses are computed for the low- and high-frequency components, which are then summed together to produce the full broadband response. The 12 earthquakes considered in Graves, R.W. (2022). Using a Grid-Search Approach to Validate the Graves-Pitarka Broadband Simulation Method, Earth, Planets and Space, 74:186, doi: 10.1186/s40623-022-01742-y, are...

These data are the basis of the figures in the manuscript "A Wideband magnetoresistive sensor for monitoring dynamic fault slip in laboratory fault friction experiments". That report was the result of an investigation of a non-contact, wideband method of sensing dynamic fault slip in laboratory geophysical experiments which employs an inexpensive magnetoresistive sensor, a small neodymium rare earth magnet, and user built application specific wideband signal conditioning electronics. The magnetoresistive sensor generates a voltage proportional to the changing angles of magnetic flux lines, generated by differential motion or rotation of the near-by magnet, through the sensor. The performance of an array of these...
