Water depths were measured during November 2015 and bathymetric elevations were computed for the lower Sixmile Creek reservoir in Ithaca, Tompkins County, N.Y. These data were used to create a bathymetric surface (TIN) of the reservoir. Data collected in 1938 were used to create a second TIN and a contour line shapefile. This dataset includes the ADCP-measured transect data and manually-measured point data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Ithaca, N.Y., during November 16-20, 2015, and the two bathymetric-surface TINS (for 1938 and 2015) and a 1938 contour line shapefile that were created by the GIS program, City of Ithaca, N.Y.

Introduction In 2012, Hurricane Sandy created an open breach in the barrier island system along the south shore of Long Island, N.Y. This breach formed at a location known as Old Inlet and migrated rapidly westward over the winter storm season following Hurricane Sandy. In response, the National Park Service sought assistance from the USGS New York Water Science Center to help evaluate the hydrodynamics and geomorphology of the breach. The evaluation is centered on measurement of water velocities and depths within the breach, and collection of water levels with the Great South Bay adjacent to the breach. This project is part of a larger ongoing study prepared in coordination with the National Park Service...

Ecosystem metabolism is a measure of energy flow in terrestrial and aquatic environments that quantifies a balance between the rate of biomass production by photosynthesizing plants and the rate of biomass oxidation by respiring plants and animals to maintain and build living biomass. It is therefore a fundamental measure of ecosystem function that quantifies the balance between the rate of production, maintenance, and decay of organic matter. It also provides an understanding of energy flow to higher trophic levels that supports food webs with secondary and tertiary productivity. Furthermore, metabolism helps explain when aquatic ecosystems undergo out-of-balance behaviors such as hypoxia. Recent advances in sensor...

This dataset includes spreadsheets with statistical data (mean and median absolute error) used in deciding which interpolation method best fit the corresponding dataset. All statistical data were paired with a visual inspection of the interpolation prior to determining the final raster product. All spreadsheets were generated using an automated python script (Jahn, 2020).

This dataset includes georeferenced TIFF files from two separate reports for the Jamestown study area that have been digitized into feature classes within ArcGIS. Not all digitized and georeferenced data was necessarily used in the final interpolations, however they may have contributed to understanding the local hydrogeology.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides surface water quality and groundwater elevation data collected by USGS personnel within the Central Pine Barrens (CPB) Region of Suffolk County, New York, from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. The data were collected in cooperation with the Central Pine Barrens Commission and the Town of Brookhaven as part of a comprehensive water resources monitoring program during 2017 to 2023. Water quality and quality assurance data from seven sites on two rivers (Carmans River- five sites and Peconic River- two sites) in the CPB are included. Carmans River sites were sampled four times throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and Peconic River...

Flood profiles for the stream reaches were computed by combining a one-dimensional step-backwater model for the stream channels and a two-dimensional model for the overbank areas. The resulting hydraulic model was calibrated by using water-surface profiles from five observed storm events. The model was then used to compute 15 water-surface profiles for 5 flood frequencies (50- , 10- , 2- , 1- , and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities, or 2- , 10- , 50- , 100- , and 500-year recurrence intervals) and 3 lake levels (representing average conditions, a 2-year-high condition, and a 100-year-high condition). The geographic information system flood-extent polygons, depth grids, and water surface elevation grids...

From April 2013 to August 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Town of Enfield and the Tompkins County Planning Department, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 69 locations in the Enfield Creek valley to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits and depth to bedrock. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast between the bedrock and...

The breast feathers of 13 bald eagles were collected at 11 locations during 2014 to 2016 along rivers and sloughs on or near to Bad River tribal lands and analyzed for total mercury (Hg) concentrations. An age (7 - 9 weeks) was indicated for only two of the eagle feather samples. The eagle feathers sampled were likely all from nestlings, but this could be confirmed for only two of the eagles. Neither the collection of feather samples nor the Hg analyses were performed by the U.S. Geological Survey, New York Water Science Center.

This folder contains the raw and processed TEM data and inverted soundings showing resistivity (in ohm-m) with depth for all survey sites that were part of transect 11. In October and November 2016-2017, transient electromagnetic (TEM) data, also called time domain electromagnetic (TDEM) surveys, were acquired at 120 locations in the Genesee Valley, Livingston County, in New York, in order to characterize the subsurface resistivity structure in support of a U.S. Geological Survey groundwater investigation. The TEM data were collected as part of a project to evaluate geophysical methods to characterize the valley-fill sediments, underlying bedrock, and salinity of the subsurface. TEM data were collected using an...
From May 2017 to November 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted bathymetric surveys of New York City's East of Hudson Reservoirs. Bathymetry data were collected at Lake Gilead during May 2017. Depth data were collected primarily with a multibeam echosounder. Quality assurance points were measured with a single-beam echosounder. Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) and static global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveys and submersible pressure transducers. Measured sound velocity profiles were used to correct echosounder depth measurements for thermal stratification. Digital elevation models were created by combining the measured bathymetry data with lidar elevation...

The movement of mercury (Hg) from the atmosphere to the biosphere occurs by both wet and dry deposition to solid surfaces, water, and vegetation. Most of the annual dry atmospheric Hg deposition in deciduous forests is believed to originate from litterfall which consists mainly of dead leaves that fall to the earth’s surface, primarily during the autumn and winter seasons. Atmospheric Hg reaches an annual maximum concentration in leaves at the time of leaf fall. Analysis of litterfall samples helps to quantify total annual atmospheric Hg deposition to forests when combined with precipitation Hg data. This data set is derived from litterfall samples collected during 2017-18 and 2018-19 at 27 selected National Atmospheric...
