The USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY–MT WSC) completed a report (Sando and McCarthy, 2018) documenting methods for peak-flow frequency analysis following implementation of the Bulletin 17C guidelines. The methods are used to provide estimates of peak-flow quantiles for 50-, 42.9-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) for selected streamgages operated by the WY–MT WSC. This data release presents peak-flow frequency analyses for 11 selected streamgages in Jefferson County, Montana, that were based on methods described by Sando and McCarthy (2018).

In 2021, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program, cataloged and scanned notes and calculations for indirect measurements taken during flood events in Montana. This product provides a publicly available catalog of the field notes, photos, survey information, and calculations for indirect measurements at selected sites. Indirect measurements are surveyed by the USGS after floods by identifying high water marks along rivers indicating the maximum stream stage. These high water marks are used to estimate the peak discharge through standardized methods. Estimates of peak streamflow from the indirect estimates were were added to the National...

The WY-MT WSC conducted a study to develop regression equations for estimating peak-flow frequencies in Montana, using channel-width characteristics. Channel widths were measured in the field at 69 streamgage sites. Upper Plains (UP) Region. The U.S. Geological Survey Dakota Water Science Center, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is analyzing annual peak-flow data to determine if trends are present and provide attribution of trends where possible. This dataset contains four core comma separated values (csv) files (50-year monotonic, 75-year monotonic, 50-year change point, and 75-change point). Each of the four core csv files includes the USGS gage identifier, various statistical values, primary and secondary attribution, level of evidence, and comments/citations. The comments/citations column should include any sources, in addition to the statistical values in the csv, that were needed to decide on the...

The WY-MT WSC conducted a study to develop regression equations for estimating peak-flow frequencies in Montana, using channel-width characteristics. Channel widths were measured in the field and from aerial photographs. This data release includes three child items: a table of field measurements, a table of measurements from aerial photographs, and a summary table of the data (field measurements and measurements from aerial photographs) used to develop the regression equations.
