Wireline logging temperature readings are known to be imprecise and need to be corrected to more accurately show what the formation temperature is. One issue with correcting logging temperatures is what correction factor to use. Because there are so many correction factors and they are based on different types of data and locations choosing a correction factor for a particular study area can be challenging to deal with. Some previous work has factored in only depth and other work includes time since circulation as a major component. This data set is comprised of bottom hole temperature, depth, and time since circulation that have had seven different correction factors run on the data. The data was consolidated into...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

The input form provides a record of the complete input values required for the quantitative assessment of water and proppant associated with oil and gas production for the continuous oil and gas resource in a geologically defined Assessment Unit. The same input form template is used for all such assessments. Each USGS water and proppant assessment builds from a USGS petroleum assessment that provides the geologic foundation and determination of assessment units for the water and proppant assessment.

As part of a broader research program to examine domestic source rock reservoirs, the Gulf Coast Petroleum Systems project of the USGS Energy Resources Program drilled a research borehole into Late Cretaceous mudstones in McLennan County, Texas, including the Cenomanian-Turonian Eagle Ford Group. A comprehensive wireline geophysical logging suite and over 600 ft of continuous core were obtained to advance the understanding of the stratigraphy, rock and fluid properties, burial history, and depositional environment of these uncompacted and thermally immature Eagle Ford source rocks. Geophysical logs were calibrated with geochemical core data to characterize mineralogical variability and petrophysical characterization...

This data release is a compilation of published and unpublished thermal maturity and source rock geochemical data (Rock-Eval, pyrolysis) from subsurface wells in the Permian Basin, west Texas and southeast New Mexico. These data include 67 newly collected samples and analyses from Delaware Basin wells (identified as Cicero_2022), as well as 1028 previously unpublished USGS analyses from the entire province (identified as LIMS). Data were also synthesized from publicly available sources, such as theses and dissertations, state agencies and databases, as well as from the body of published literature.

A 3D petroleum systems model requires that the temperature at the sediment surface be defined at each geological time step. Generally, surface temperature can be modeled from paleo-elevation or paleo-water depth history, as well as the paleo-latitude of the basin and global climate patterns through time. The PetroMod software, from which the 3D petroleum systems model was generated, uses the Sediment-Water Interface Temperature (SWIT) tool to help define these boundary conditions. In most time steps, the model assumes that paleo-water depth/elevation was flat and uniform across the basin. In these time steps, surface temperatures in the model do not vary across the basin and are determined by the paleo-latitude...

Major-element and trace-element concentrations in 76 core samples and seven surface samples of rocks from the Coles Hill uranium deposit and vicinity, Pittsylvania County, south-central Virginia are presented as tabular digital data. The Coles Hill deposit is the largest unmined uranium deposit in the United States. The data were collected to 1) characterize the chemistry of variably uranium-mineralized rock units within the deposit and 2) to compare with the chemistry of un-mineralized surface exposures of the same rock units. Cores were sampled in 2017 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) personnel from archived historical collections of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Core samples were selected based on measurable...

Cell maps are created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of petroleum exploration, type of production as indicated by final well status, distribution of production and well density in a given area; in this case, covering the SaMiRa project area of interest. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether oil and gas wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Enerdeq, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information...

This dataset contains geochemical data (Total Inorganic Carbon, Total Organic Carbon, Total Nitrogen, δ13C of Organic Carbon, Hydrogen Index, Oxygen Index, Zirconium/Aluminum, and Magnetic Susceptibility) for sediments from one short (~1 m) core collected in 420 m of water in southern Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania.
Hydraulic fracturing is a treatment method used to stimulate production from oil and gas wells. Hydraulic fracturing involves injection of treatment fluids mixed with propping agents under high pressure into perforated portions of the wellbore. This method causes the reservoir rocks to fracture and the hydraulic fracturing fluids and propping agents to enter the fractures. Subsequently, the injected propping agents remain in the fractures while the oil, gas and(or) water flows back to the well head at the surface. This dataset is a compilation of information on the types and amounts of treatment fluids applied to oil and gas onshore wells that were hydraulically fractured in the United States from 2015 through 2019....
