In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. This is a selected data set used to assess the impacts of rodenticide treatment on black rat (Rattus rattus) abundance within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). The key objective was to identify rat abundance before and after rodenticide treatment, using paired non-treatment and treatment plots at high elevation (1700-1830m) and low elevation (1220-1340 m). This dataset includes the results of a mark recapture study that took place within...

In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. We evaluated the nesting response of Hawai‘i ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis; Monarchidae), a generalist insectivore, to the removal of black rats using rodenticide in a before-after-control-impact study in high and low, mesic montane habitat recovering from long-term damage from introduced ungulates and weeds. We monitored nesting and rat activity during 2015–2016 before applying diphacinone bait in 2017 to remove rats from two 700 x...

This data release includes metadata and tabular data that document estimates of litterfall, koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) caterpillar frass production, soil nutrients, and foliar nutrients during 2013-2014 at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. During this time, there was a massive defoliation event of Acacia koa (koa) trees by the koa moth. We monitored these metrics in 4 sites that varied in forest structure and composition at Hakalau. We used litter traps to monitor koa litter fall over time and foliar %N to estimate N inputs from litter. We used caterpillar counts, koa canopy estimates, frass production rates, and frass %N to estimate N inputs from frass on the landscape. We used resin bags under koa...
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that document the response of koa (Acacia koa) trees to defoliation by the koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) during 2013-2014 at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Data were collected on 55 plots at 4 sites representing 2 habitat types with either high or low koa densities. Ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees dominated habitats with low koa density. Data sets document (1) locations and habitat type of forest plots where koa trees were evaluated, (2) density and size of koa trees within plots, extent of koa tree defoliation, rate of koa tree foliage regrowth (refoliation), and koa tree mortality, and (3) counts and relative size of ohia trees for evaluating...
This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents the fate of caterpillars collected from different plant species at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge during 2017-2018. The dataset identifies the final stage obtained for each caterpillar collected. Final stages included: caterpillar, pupa, adult (moth or butterfly) and parasitized by Hymenoptera.

This data release includes metadata and tabular data documenting the reproductive demography of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi), including rates of parasitism by two species of Ooencyrtus wasp. Data was collected at approximately monthly surveys of marked host trees (Micromelum minutum) at eight forest stands, mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), Tutuila Island, during 2013-2014. One stand was located near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. Data sets document: (1) sampling effort for swallowtail specimens during monthly surveys of host trees; (2) final life cycle stage achieved by swallowtail specimens brought into the laboratory for rearing or postmortem...
Data were collected to identify changes in forest composition over a 25-year period of recovery from ungulate damage. Data were collected during two time periods, 1993-1994 and 2015-2019, and include tree height, tree DBH, distance between trees, and Hawaii elepaio nest site selection (nest tree species, nest tree height, and nest tree diameter).
This is a selected data set that outlines the plot areas and trapping grids used to monitor 'Elepaio and black rat activity within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) from 2015-2017. These data provide the spatial reference and structure of four field plots used in the study. Please reference the associated metadata and datasets that correspond to this publication for more information on how these locations were used.

This data release includes metadata and tabular data documenting the reproductive response of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi) to characteristics of its host plant (Micromelum minutum) and habitat. Data was collected at approximately monthly surveys of marked host trees at eight sites, mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), Tutuila Island, during 2013-2014. One site was sampled near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. Data sets document: (1) physical and habitat characteristics of individual host trees; (2) phenology of individual host trees; (3) physical and habitat characteristics of host tree stands; (4) sampling effort during monthly surveys of host trees...

This data release contains the tabular data and metadata to record changes in forest composition (tree species relative abundance, tree density, tree height, and tree diameter) over a span from 1993-1994 and 2015-2019. The data also includes Hawaii elepaio breeding territory sizes, and nest site selection (nest tree species, nest tree height, nest tree diameter).

We monitored nesting activity during 2015–2016 before applying diphacinone bait in 2017 to remove rats from two 700 x 700-m treatment plots that were paired with two non-treatment plots. We continued monitoring through July 2017. This data set includes a summarized account of Elepaio nests during the 2015, 2016, and 2017 breeding seasons. There is a unique identifier for each nest ('NestID '), along with...
