Purpose

Data were collected to document the different types of mandibles found on caterpillars at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose of these dissections was to match unidentified caterpillar mandibles obtained during an earlier study that examined diets of forest birds with particular caterpillar species, and the host plants on which they are associated. This is important because it provides a better understanding of the importance of the different plant species as foraging substrate for forest birds found on the refuge.
